    Is the new Pocky & Rocky Reshrined a remake? A reboot? Or a sequel. What was censored for the western release? Is it worth buying? Find out in my review and why any fan of the SNES games shouldn't miss it.

      I know this has NOTHING to do with shm'ups or this game... but it DOES have to do with Natsume itself! being that they've come out with semi/revisions of previous titles of theirs that could, like this one, be considered "retellings" such as "Ninja Saviors" and "Wild Guns: ReLoaded"; you know which game of theirs I'd LOVE to see them bring about? (but perhaps they may never do since the license was shared with the now-defunct JaLeCo)? "Shatterhand"! any who played the NES cult classic will know why; all others... play it and experience true action!

      @@triplestar100 I understand your point but agree to disagree, 'cause Solbrain was the original and ShatterHand was merely a skinswap with many aspects of the game missing, so in my not less humble opinion it would be perfect if Solbrain will get the overhaul you was talking about.

    I consider myself lucky to have had the opportunity to play this game as a kid. Holds up so well today, and this remake looks fantastic!
    And the soundtrack is absolutely beautiful! They took the original composition and made it 1000 times better. Unbelievable!

    • @ShmupJunkie

      I never did get to own a SNES as a kid, but played both the games with friends who did have them. Always were great coop games and I especially liked the first one. Couldn't have asked for a better recreation here and really glad it came out as well as it did. It's good to see some companies taking so much care in releasing classic franchises that does the original games justice.

  • @Squirrelsquid

    Good review! What I find most fascinating about this game, is the fact that the actual production side of things, was handled by only 3 people. As a pixel artist in the game industry, the fact that they had one artist to do ALL that sprite work and all the background scrolls is just astonishing.

    • @ShmupJunkie
      @ShmupJunkie  2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Almost old school like how they used to do it in the early days. Toaplan was that way too. You get to see the personality of the developer and artist in the game itself vs being made and approved by committee. What a great job they did here.

      Yeah, this bit me in the rear today. My physical copy showed up, amd my oldest son and I were ready to go. We got the two younger kids down, fired it up, and... honestly, it pissed me off. Co-op shouldn't have been an unlockable. Frankly, I'm not enjoying the story mode at all, and I'm a die-hard on the series. I don't like having to play as different characters, and I'm really not liking Rocky's base attack, as the homing shot tends to flare out and hit walls in the many narrow corridors. I'm sure I'll come around eventually, but this left a bad taste in my mouth to start, and disappointed us here.

    • @ShmupJunkie
      @ShmupJunkie  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@bananonymouslastname5693 At least I can understand the choice of mixing up characters for the story mode even if not everyone is a fan. So you pretty much have to complete it to unlock free play and choose your single character for the game. But having to unlock coop is very strange and maybe if they listen to enough feedback they’ll patch that. As I can’t see any reason why anyone would be fond of that. When I pick up Jackal on nes and want to play with my boy, dammit it better be there! So I’m very with you on that part.

    Not sure if they are your cup of tea, or if they even qualify as “shoot em ups”, but personally I think it’d be a really interesting genre to watch you cover, as unlike 2D shmups who’ve kinda managed to survive in the background of the industry as a niche, 3D rail shooters pretty much came and went, and then never really made a return outside of a scare few examples.

    • @ShmupJunkie

      I'm sure you can but it's mostly designed around a typical gamepad. I know someone who was playing it with a stick and it felt odd for them vs using a pad. An analogue stick I'm sure would be fine along with using a typical pad like I prefer.

      Honestly the censorship doesn't effect the gameplay at all and you won't really care. At least not for long. It's more a matter of prinicple for most as the changes are minor and silly. Possibly to achieve a certain ESRB rating. Go with whatever one you want and enjoy it just the same. I did the Japan download so I wouldn't have even know if it wasn't being made into a big deal online.

    I never played Pocky and Rocky games before, so I got totally confused looking at this game. "This isn't a shmup," I thought, and then you mentioned "run n' gun" and then I remembered such games like Contra and Super C. But Pocky and Rocky Reshrined has a lot more bullets firing around, acting like a shmup in some ways.
    The developers missed an opportunity to make the music "really good" as opposed to "good enough." I buy limited editions to get their soundtracks (for offline driving music), so this game's music doesn't seem to hit the mark for me.
    As always, great, comprehensive review with input lag detail. I always look for your input lag rating now.

    • @ShmupJunkie
      @ShmupJunkie  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Likely depends on who you ask on the music as it’s still really catchy. I wouldn’t consider it driving music myself no. They worked with mostly the original tracks and remixed them superbly. But sometimes it has to be appropriate for the game like here versus just rockin’ standalone tracks. So yeah it’s not like Cotton PC Engine or Lords of Thunder listen anywhere kind of tracks. But for anyone who has a big nostalgia for the original games will love it and would likely been displeased if they didn’t bring back some classic tunes. I’m with you it’s not a drive and listen for me but when playing it’s pretty perfect and fits the game. I’d definitely listen to them before dropping on the soundtrack if you don’t have a history with the series anyway. Andro Dunos II was more the listen anywhere variety for me.

      @@ShmupJunkie Thanks. I will probably listen to the music in some playthroughs of Pocky and Rocky Reshrined before deciding to buy the limited edition. I hate to be spoiled, but the music is an important element to my gameplaying experience.
      Yes, I agree not all shmup game music is good for offline driving music, but I think Cotton PC-Engine music and Cotton Reboot did a great job there. The compositions work within the game and stand up well on their own.

    I gotta defend Ghouls and Ghosts Resurrection here! Yes it's not pixel art, but it's like something out of my wildest imagination from back in the PS1/Saturn era when I was dreaming of what 2D visuals might look like if they continued to advance down a high res direction instead of everything high res being 3D only! Play it in 4K or higher on PC/Steam and it looks simply incredible, while maintaining the goofy charm of the animation of the original and its concept art!
    There's room for all kinds when it comes to reinterpreting the classics, whether it's showing high resolution screens what pixel art ought to look like or pushing sprites in the wildest high resolution direction possible! Praise to all the remakes that put in the effort and don't just phone it in!

    • @ShmupJunkie
      @ShmupJunkie  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I know it's mainly my preference, it just didn't work for me. It made things look like cardboard cutouts. Reminded me of the later somewhat ugly 3D versions. I totally agree though that changing it up, if done really well, is just as legit as keeping it like the original. There have been some great re-imaginings like SoR4 but still felt true to the original (and even threw in the old pixel art option). I love beautiful 2D art games like Ori and the Blind Forest and often prefer them. Just something about G&G didn't work for me so I kind of called it out, but I'll absolutely admit it's as much my personal preference. As I do know others who really liked it like you did.

      I think it did have some basic scanline options yeah. I don't use them usually as they don't always look that great. And I turn them off for youtube recording. But I do recall seeing something.

    I loved Reshrined! It was pretty much everything I wanted for in a revival and sits as my new top fav in the series.
    So I'm that guy that doesn't read manuals and skip how to play sections. I have just now learned about the mirrors and shields 😅

      Haha, well I didn't have a manual either and bought it digital. I did look through it though in the game itself. Those special attacks are super useful and add to the game, though more useful with some characters than others.

    I hope this is a success that they decide to make more of these games. Great review and lucky you to get an early copy. 😋

      Oh I wasn't lucky no early copies for me. I bought it digital on the Japan store like everyone else. I don't know anyone that got very early copies actually.

    I love this game. Played at my friend's house as a kid and thought about buying it for Super Nintendo but the prices are crazy. This definitely scratched that and itch, so much its relieving. I hope its not true about this being tengo project swansong. Would love to see then do SCAT but in their awesome 16 bit pixel art form.

    Pretty much a new game in the series due to all the changes made, but still rock solid. I own the arcade version on Taito compilations, and lucky enough to have the second SNES game, gotten years ago locally by sheer luck, for $25 cart only.

      Nice! I don't own the carts of the original games and they go for a pretty penny now. I wouldn't mind a copy of the original.

      @@ShmupJunkie I'd love to own the original SNES game myself, and the GBA one, but man, it's just not fair that even the Japanese versions cost an arm, a leg, and a first born these days.
