Today I’m going to Flat Rock Ranch for my first time with Chris who you may recognize from last week’s Walnut Creed video. Located in the small town of Comfort in the Texas Hill Country, this place is a huge destination for mountain bikers. It’s a privately owned park that doesn’t allow hikers or pets and features 28 miles of trails with gorgeous views, lots of hill climbs, long downhill sections, technical single track, and plenty of challenges to test your abilities. It does have a $10 entrance fee, but I think it’s a very fair price for what you get. There are two main loops here….the upper and lower loop. Chris and I did the upper loop which ended up being the more difficult one. Having heard tons about this place from many people I was anticipating tons of flowy singletrack, and I would have gotten it….if we did the lower loop. Instead we were greeted with climbs….lots and lots of climbs. While a Colorado viewer would scoff at the 600 feet of elevation change, to a San Antonio rider it totally took my breath away. Once you get to the top however the views are totally worth the climbing….plus you get to descend the other side. Flat rock ranch is labeled fairly well with colored arrows so you stay on the same trail system, and they actually have signs to warn you of drops. We came to a somewhat intimidating drop and debated for a minute to try it. Doesn’t look all that bad from the top, but looking from the bottom makes your heart drop just a bit. We went for it anyways and no one died.
Afterwards we came to a split in the trail with a sign for Black Sheep. What obviously started as a climb led to our favorite section of the day. On to more climbing!
Like chunky stuff? You got it! This place also features lots of pedal strikes, so keep your pedal placement in mind. Something I neglected to do here.
Definitely put on some sun screen and pack extra water in your car. The ranch has very limited shade and nowhere to fill your pack that I saw.
Flat Rock Ranch offers a ton for all types of riders. We covered about 7 miles on this trip, so I’m excited to go back and explore more of this hill country gem. It was only about 45 minutes from San Antonio and around 2 hours max from Austin. If you are coming from further away they even offer camp sites and a lodge to spend the weekend in. So if you are coming to Texas, make sure Flat Rock Ranch is on your to do list. If you enjoyed this video please don’t forget to give it a thumbs up and consider subscribing if you aren’t. A new adventure on wheels awaits you weekly and we’d love to have you here.
Thanks so much for watching and until next week, stay rowdy within reason.
That downhill was a lot of fun. I want to go do it again but dont want to have to climb like crazy to get back there. I was rendering my file and I saw yours was up, we somehow used the exact same colors for the title hahaha.
I hope to hit that hill much faster next time. Great minds think alike on that color scheme!
Good content, it was definitely a challenge but those views where amazing!
Thanks! It's really beautiful there. Waiting for some cool weather then I wanna go out there again.
Went out there for the first time last month. Did the enduro race and had a blast. I will def go back and do the race again next year!
That's awesome Mark! Heard the race was super windy. What area do you live in?
Yeah it was very windy on that Saturday. I live in Las Cruces, NM. That’s about 30 miles north of El Paso, TX. Thinking about visiting my niece in Austin and hitting up Spider mountain.
Oh wow, you came a long way! I rode Spider Mountain this weekend and it was really fun. Editing that video right now. Should be out Wednesday. Luckily you are much closer to Angel Fire than me. I want to come ride that!
Yeah I can’t wait for Angel Fire to open. Looking forward to your video too!
This looks awesome! Cant wait to get on it this summer!
Yes this place is fantastic! Summer can be brutal here in the heat, but it's manageable.
Nice trail bro i love those hill country trails and scenery i gotta go there👍👊🚲
Flat Rock Ranch is absolutely worth the drive. You're in SA right?
Cobra Kyle I'm in Red Oak Texas 20 miles south of Dallas
I really want to ride out there. Looks great.
Hey Alden! I think it's well worth the drive from Austin.
Cool vid. Gonna try to put together a ride out there in the next couple of weeks.
Thanks! I'm excited to check it out again. This was my one and only time there. I haven't done the lower loop yet. Waiting for it to cool down a little.
I've done the lower loop several times and it's a lot of fun but not without it's climbs. Never done the upper loop but I always heard it was the harder of the two. Hope to cross paths with you some day...
@@Fresh2Salt Upper loop was fairly challenging in the heat! I'm looking to do a group ride in near future. Keep an eye out for a video announcement on that!
Roger that...I'll check back to see when that might happen. With all this rain it may be the only place to ride for a while. I hear it dries up pretty quick out there.
I love this place! Terry's trail is my FAV!
One of the best places to ride locally!
@@CobraKyle I love how tired you got on the climbs... They are killer. My first trip there was to the top of pipline hill and I thought I was going to die! hahahaha. I think we rode about 12 miles or so that day!
@@CobraKyle Kinda far for me coming from west houston. My local ride is the Anthills
Oh right on. Houston is on my to do list. Haven't ever been there and heard it has some good spots to ride.
Patrick and I volunteered there once for paydirt. Jeff & Jimmy were there and we had a few beers after with BBQ!
Great video! I haven't ridden there but many of my friends have and loved it. I love all the rockiness. 🤘
Thanks! Come on down and give it a go!
Looks like a blast man and a good work out to boot. Keep up the good work!
Such a great location. Thanks for checking it out Florida Trailrider!
Hey kyle good to see you
Hi Yuan. Good to see you too!
earn the downhill by climbing. besides, those are little hills. get in shape in Texas and then hit some real earned downhills in Colorado. looks like a great place to get low altitude fitness. nice vid.
Dope channel bro! Just subbed!
Thanks Kenneth! Glad to have you here. You ride BMX at all? I have one, but suck at it haha.
Cobra Kyle No problem. You have some pretty good content! & I actually don't but it looks fun tho!
Great stuff, Kyle! I missed this when you first posted it - glad to catch up.
You give a road biker a new perspective. Thanks! :)
Good video man keep up the good work
Hey Max, Thanks a lot!
Funnnn times.. extra water extra water extra water
For real....especially now in summer!
Cobra Kyle dry heat and humidity
Cobra Kyle where are you and chris riding next?
We talked about McAllister this weekend. I'm filming another episode (hopefully) on budget bikes, so will be on a cheap hardtail haha.
Cobra Kyle Rep the Hardtail... teal steal... the jumps at Mac were deconstructed
Going there with a few buddies in 2 weeks! Which loop has more enduro/downhill runs?
Sick! The upper loop probably has a little bit more downhill runs. If that's all you're interested in they even have a fire road straight up to 4 enduro lines. I've only done lower loop once, and while it's pretty fun, it was mostly normal trail riding with a good amount of climbing (that I saw at least). Have a good time!
Black sheep is the harder trail there but it is the funnest
Black Sheep was easily my favorite part of that ride!
Let me know next time you head out there.
For sure man. I'm hoping it's soon before the death inducing heat of summer.
alright dude we need to plan a weekend, you down? Unfortunately would you be able to do a Tuesday and Wednesday? Just a one night over night ride Tuesday wake up shred Wednesday?
Yeah man that would be sweet! We could shoot for late September or early October when it cools down some? I'm taking some vacation days tomorrow, so need to space them out a little.
I am glad that you didnt edit your crash out of the video. I dont feel so bad now.
Haha no shame in crashing! The only way to get better. I'm looking forward to going back here soon!
Do you still have the tires
I do. Unfortunately right now I have a ton of expenses coming up, so can't afford to ship them out at the moment. I'll message you if I'm able to send them in the future.
Cobra Kyle thanks
Do you have a spare short stem
Sorry I don't :(
