    I get stressed out when people have no concept of weeks. It's so ingrained in work, school, off term, childcare, vacation, booking of a cabin for example, traveling, planning, and so on.

    I've eaten plenty of meals in low light enviroments but I would say that the most common thing is to turn the roof light off and keep other lights like in your windows, on your bookcase or standing lights on so that you don't completely blackout the room. Then the candles on the table is more for ambiance than actual lighting.

    Numbered weeks is the best invention! I work in Swedish school and we talk more about week numbers than of the dates. F.ex: "Can we book a meeting Thursday week 40?".
    I do not know anyone who keeps it that dark that you hardly can see your food. never heard of. I don't know what people he has dined with :)

    It is incomprehensible that all countries do not use this week’s numbers. For example. Its always a week off for children in the spring. The leave is divided depending on which part of the country you live in, we have to balance the load because many people travel away. In the Stockholm area it is always v.9. it has been that way for at least 40 years. In the autumn there are school holidays v.44. It is easy to remember and easy to plan trips long in advance. Everyone knows that v.44 is a leave week and employers know that then families with children and their leave are prioritized. There are only advantages and no disadvantages. Not wanting it is like saying that names for days are unnecessary because we have dates.

    In the 70s I was working at a museum (in Sweden) with the first attempt to build a data base of the collections. Since memory is expensive and much more so back then, every character was counted. To save money date was shortened to year-week-day where 75161 means a monday in the middle of April 1975 (week 16). Museum people were maybe even more conservative than other people: Why should we use computers? Whats wrong with paper and pen? Shortenings where also an obstacle. But learning week numbers was the ultimate insult! Never! We worked for years to teach the staff. Often failed. In the 80s memory became cheaper and more user-friendly systems appeared. And today nobody wants to write labels by hand. And offices and schools finally adopted week numbers. But today I, myself, have to check at internet if I had know which week number it is now.

    Week numbers are very practical for the professional part of life, like vacation e.t.c. Also the planing at a company often use week numbers. At week 42 this machine will stand still for service, or at week 28 this ggods will be delivered, a few examples. I'ts used when the pointed time is not a specifik day or month, but a week or several weeks.

    Week numbers are used also in business. I usually don't keep track which week it is except for when it's time for vacation. I think this might be more relevant for people with office jobs maybe and in the education system. I'm guessing since a lot of people take full weeks off for vacation it's easier to say the week you're off than days. Like, im on vacation week 28-32 for example.

    Anyway, to be honest, I don't think there is that big of a difference between Swedes and Englishmen. Even less difference between Scots and Swedes. In fact, I think that Swedes, Norwegians, and Scots have quite similar culture and attitudes and humor.
    In fact, I even find that Scots and Swedes have more in common with each other than Swedes and Danes. I have traveled a lot in these countries and can see similarities and differences. However, Americans and Swedes are quite different, I would say.

  • @johnnyrosenberg9522
    @johnnyrosenberg9522 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Week numbers can't be a Swedish-only thing. There's a freaking function for calculating week numbers in Excel, LibreOffice Calc and all the other spreadsheet applications, and those functions let you set the rules for how to do that. That wouldn't be necessary if there was only one rule to follow. In Sweden week 1 is the first week of the year that has more days in the new year than in the previous year, that is at least four days in the new year. There are other ways to define week 1, so obviously they do it differently in some other countries, hence other counties use week numbers as well.

    Counting weeks makes much more sense that months and days.. You can always trust that the first day of week XX is a Monday, but the first day of June can be whatever. The swedish industry holiday or what you wanna call it in english is always weeks 28-31. And if you want to take 5 or 6 weeks it pretty much always includes those weeks anyway. It's also much easier for people working every other week or so to know that they always work odd or even weeks.

    • @calleflygare746
      @calleflygare746 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Easier to use dates since you always more or less know what date it is without looking out up, but not the week. If you know it's 7th of June and someone say they will go on vacation the 23rd of June it's easy to know exactly when.
      Also, the year always starts with the same date, but not always the same week which is the major flaw of that system.

    In general, firing someone is a tough thing in Sweden. Companies must do their best to resolve issues is an employee is unruly or just doesn't fit well with the team by sending to extra courses or having workshops or even try to relocate the emploee somewhere else. The Unions (assuming the person is a member) will make sure to protect the person's interests.
    This is when the Trial Employment is a good thing. You work as a regular employee for up to 6 months and during this period the company can let you go without reason and with barely any notice, but you as the employee can also decide that the company was not good for you (bad coworkers, toxic environment, maybe the offices are not good quality and being there triggers your asthma). This can at most be 6 months after which the company must either let you go or employ you, but it can be negotiated to be lower or even remove it completely.
    Some senior Engineers or Software Developers that have to migrate and maybe even move to another continent can claim that it's a huge risk to sell their belongings back home and move everything and their kids over just to be let go after a few months (and then have to leave the country unless they can find another company in 3 months to sponsor their work permits so they can stay). So they leverage that they can show their value to the company and that they have been with other companies for years without issues (so they are probably not going to grope their co-workers) to have the company waive that Provanställning, or the company can agree to a shorter Provanställning and the recruit can move alone without their family for a period until everything is sorted.
    There are "loopholes" to the systems such as companies claiming there's just not enough work to keep everyone employed, but then there are rules to whom they can fire ("last in, first out" meaning whoever was most recently hired has to go first so the company cannot pick and choose who to fire).

    Week numbering is mainly an administrary tool, it's much easier to see if many employees are off for vacation at the same time, so the boss can desuade more people from taking vacation at that time. Ordinary workers usually don't really like or use Week numbers.
    For Vacation destinations, it really depends, but Thailand is fairly popular, it used to be Mallorca and Ibiza but I think it's fallen out of style (except for small groups of people).
    But we go everywhere, Australia, China, Japan, USA, all over Europe. And of course within Sweden, Hiking, Sailing, or just taking a road trip with a Caravan.
    A Provanställning is up to 6 months, but can be shorter, or not used at all.
    Turning the lights off is a Women thing, I've never been in a situation where a man does that.

This is more common than you might think. Also, they can promote layoffs by moving the company to a location uncomfortably far away, or even sell the company and relocate workers into jobs they're not really that suited for (unions will press agains this) but it does happen.

    And its like this, if one is a suplier to those big companyes one close at the same time!
    Moste banks, and lawyers to!
    Then we do have schools, that have vacations, february vacation, easter Vacation, midsummer vaccation and end of shool celebration, start of school attendante.. its this its those weeks.. its on those weeks schools are closed.. you need to be at home as a parent! As a parent one need to and like to know wich weeks I need to be at home.. and ones HR department and/or your boss need to know wich weeks you gonna be absent so they can plan!
    Its this its not weird at all.. everybody need to know wich week/weeks, to fly to Spain, Thailand.. or fly/drive to a ski resort.. and you have to negotiate weeks with colleges and your boss!
    Its still this.. one have to book ones vacations at least 6 months befor to get a ticket!

    "We don't number our weeks" is just weird to say. There's 52 weeks in a year (53 every 6 or so years, google it) =They're already numbered! We don't KNOW exactly when each numbered week is, but given that week 1 is in the beginning of a year, 52 at the and and therefor 26 in the middle we just guesstimate whatever time period someone is talking to refering to weeks.

    I’ve lived in Sweden 35+ years and have no idea when week 35 is.. ☺️
    I hate the ”anställningstrygghet” people who have worked in the same company get lazy because it is “last in fist out”…
    I just adapt my sight so I can have it dark and see without a problem, if I have it very light I will get blinded. ☺️
    I don’t like that they can advertise 0% alcohol drinks, they changed that.. But now you can also scam people in Sweden and get away with it as long as they pay taxes..
