@@DeanaandPhil Meine Frau hat auch Deutsch gelernt (ich habe Deutsch studiert), aber unsere 4 Kinder sprechen nur Englisch. Wir hatten auch unsere "Geheimsprache", und haben es so genannt, ohne ein richtiges Wort dafuer gelernt zu haben. Ich habe gar nicht gewusst, dass dieses Wort "Geheimssprache" ein echtes deutsches Wort ist - dann habt ihr das Wort hierin genutzt! (Bitte, sei nicht so sehr kritisch, Phil, weil ich seit 30 Jahren nur wenig und sehr selten Deutsch gesprochen oder geschrieben habe.)

Naja, wenn man dauerhaft in Deutschland lebt, sollte man die Sprache aber auch können. Mit meinen ausländischen Kollegen in der Uni habe ich nach einem halben Jahr nur noch Deutsch gesprochen. Haben trotzdem alles verstanden.

Die wichtigste Frage die ich mir stelle ist: Welcher Rewe hat Sonntags bitte bis 13 Uhr geöffnet? :D Ich will auch :D
Hat mich auch etwas schockiert. Laut Pfandzettel ist das ein Rewe in Duderstadt, also Niedersachsen.
Jedes Bundesland hat ja andere Ladenöffnungszeiten. Mancherorts klappen die ja immernoch um 20 Uhr die Bordsteine hoch (Bayern, Thüringen am Wochenende)... Ich wohn im Drei-Länder-Eck, in Hessen und RP geht nur bis 22 Uhr, aber in BW können die Supermärkte sogar bis Mitternacht geöffnet sein. Und an Hbf erst, da ist ja selbst an Feiertagen alles stundenlang offen.
Unser Rewe hat sonntags auch geöffnet
In Kiel können wir sonntags auch am Bahnhof zum Rewe oder wir fahren etwas raus und gehen in den Kurorten einkaufen, da haben die sonntags auch bis zu einer bestimmten Uhrzeit auf.
In Leipzig hat Rewe im Hauptbahnhof auch offen :)
bei uns in Frankfurt in Sonntags alles zu, bis auf kleine Kiosks und am Bahnhof kleinere Läden, die aber dann auch extrem teuer sind.
Der Rest hat zu und das ist auch gut so, man hat so viele Tage Zeit einkaufen zu gehen.

Deannas Deutsch ist wirklich viel besser geworden. Aber ich denke, sie versteht viel mehr, als sie spricht bzw sich traut zu sprechen.

I think the next expression Deana has to learn is "Leck mich!". ;-)
In my experience a very german response to all sorts of requests.
Explanation: "Leck mich!" means "Lick me!" but that's just short for "Lick my ass!" or "Lick me at my ass!".

Loved this one! Funny how Deana interprets the same tone differently when you Phil speak English vs. German. In German the tone gets a 'don't yell' while the same tone and words slide right by when you say'em in English.
Isn't amazing how more sensitive we all become when the language and culture feel foreign to us?
Language carries a lot more than just vocabulary - there's tone, humor, cultural refernces, double speak, sarcasm... all are beyond the words we use, and thus what people take in as our 'message'.

I know why you love returning Pfand, Deana. Cuz to an American it's getting paid for garbage. Today we brought back so many bottles, and bought less, so the cashier had to pay us. That's something that never happens in America. Dude, he likes ice in his drinks, *shock*. I've never seen a huge sack of peeled Knoblauch before, Rewe?? Wait, no sour cream/quark/salsa? It was great to see Deana understanding even when Phil didn't expect her to. German is hard. Today I wrote an email in German and asked my husband to correct me and he said, "Well, there's a huge Haufen of errors, a stack, so zu sagen, do you want me to fix them all?" NO, forget it. Great video, thank you guys.

We really want to see our former Austrian exchange students. We will keep hoping and praying that we can go summer 2021. At least it gives me more time to practice German. So viel, wie ich verstanden habe, spricht du, Deana, noch nicht lange deutsch. Es ist richtig gut, dass du deutsch lernst. Es ist nicht perfekt, muss es auch nicht sein. Ich verstehe, was du sagst auf deutsch. Lustig war es, als du Kola geschrieben hast...Ich musste grinsen.
Dein Deutsch ist nach kurzer Zeit besser, als mein Englisch. Englisch habe ich mit 9 gelernt. Nach über 20 Jahren kann ich es immer noch nicht.
Hab einfach Spaß dran, deutsch zu lernen.

I can relate.. I moved to Germany 8 years ago and still finding the German really hard.. we speak English in my house and i have tried to learn but my family don't help much. They do try now and again.. maybe one day i will be able to speak German :)
