Happy that the video was helpful for you. Feel free to look at the other videos in the series on how to fully setup numerous features of the Merlin Firmware.
I managed the install the diversion without having any issues It's a bit different and somewhat easy to install now. Like you don't need to rent the ip addresses anymore it is more direct and simple and working flawlessly.
Thanks for this tutorial. Do you find running Diversion on the router ever breaks websites? With the Ublock Origin extension in Firefox - which is excellent - I sometimes have to turn it off for specific websites, for example some online shopping sites just don't work correctly with it turned on, but it's just a couple of clicks to whitelist those sites.
So far since I installed and configured Diversion on the router I have not had any issues with websites not working. As you suggested once a website not working correctly you can check the log to see if it is being blocked and if it is you can whitelist the sites.
I find diversion extremely limited, ad away on my phone does more. But now with the ever changing internet. Many aspects of ad blocking are no longer working. Diversion is heavy on RAM usage and sometimes crapping out my AX58u. I am using a USB3.0 ssd with a swap file. That never seems to be used. (TH-cam adblock is pretty much useless since on has to click a link, skip the ad. And refresh on the router log in order for that specific video to not load an ad the nwxt time you try and view a video. It's just an extra workload of nothing.) It does block several ads. And has lowered data usage on my Xbox though. ---- Are there alternative repositories? Are there any scripts and or .ipk packages that anyone knows about that aren't listed?
Hey I'm trying to install Diversion and it says I need Entware, I try adding that through the amtm menu but it never finishes just gets stalled at one point. Any idea how to fix this?
You can do a bigger swap file which allows you to run multiple scripts. The swap file don’t get filled up fast so you should be good increasing the size.
@@diytechtips247 thank you. Appreciate that! Also i see in this video it was blocked to a IP there. It shows different for me on a later version. Have you dug around this on version 5.3 ?
If your flash drive fails ads will begin showing up again. Ever so often you can check your system log for failures. Check out other videos to see how to fully configure other features for the ASUS Merlin firmware. Glad the video was helpful.
@Mcnbobby No, you do not have to re-install Diversion after doing a firmware upgrade. I have tested it multiple time and all went well but I will recommend that you do a configuration backup before performing the router firmware update. Hope that helps!
The reason why I use Diversion is that I want to have control over the block lists. It allows me to add certain domains to the whitelist to allow. Also Adguard was blocking some of the games I play on my phone so I can be granular. If you rather to have a multilayer approach to blocking ads you can use diversion and also use Adguard DNS server. It all boils down to your preference and tolerance. Hope that help!
@CaptainJonathan Diversion requires storage (USB Flash Drive). Does any of the current flash drives you have connected not using the entire storage? I have a 32 GB flash drive and I am using 2GB for Diversion and 30GB for storage. You can use multiple partitions on a flash drive to serve different purposes. Hope that helps!
Setting up Diversion Ad Blocker is not OS specific, it is done on the router level so all devices that uses your router as it's DNS resolver will use the Diversion Ad Blocker by default, no other configuration needed by your devices behind the router. To create swap memory for ASUS AC86U router you can watch the video again from 3:10 - 9:30 which will walk you through the process of how to configure swap memory for the router. Remember if you will be using the flash drive or any storage device for swap memory consider creating 2GB or higher. Hope that helps.
Thank you for this. I had to install Putty on Mac, was not fun! But got it up and running. Oddly though I have less Ads in the Block File than you, 140,000 odd... AMTM 4.0
When you install Diversion make sure that you turn on check for updates to automatically check for blocked domains or you can force an update by selecting "Update blocking list" under the Diversion tab in the LAN main menu. Hope that helps!
@@diytechtips247 First I would like to say great work with your videos. very helpful and clear. I have a few questions I hope you can help me with. My first question is if one already formatted/changed his USB drive to an ext4 with a format tool on PC, must he do it again through the amtm? Second question at 7:40 you talk about creating a swap file if one has 240GB USB and wants to install more scripts or tools must he then create each time for every scripts/tools a separate swap file? and what happens if one doesn't create a swap file? The third and last question can you make a video guide about VPNMON-R2 v2.63 scripts/tools? Because your explanation is very helpful.
@@Trust990 I am glad that the videos was helpful for you. If you already have a formatted USB drive what you can do is plug it up to the router to see if it recognizes it, if it does then you are good to go but if it is not seeing the partition it is recommended to do the format via amtm. No you do not need to create another swap file, once you already have a swap file you are fine. Most of the script would require you to have a swap file so once you already have one it should not be a problem installing more scripts. I will look to create a video on VPNMON-R2. Hope that helps!
@@diytechtips247 Thank you for your reply. I'm looking forward to it when you make the video about VPNMON-R2. I just had one question is it necessary to install after creating a swap file the Entware?
So far with the testing I have done it blocks the majority of ads, however, if you have a VPN setup to router your TV traffic through the VPN it will bypass the Ad blocker. Hope that helps!
I have never came across such error. You may want to try another flash drive but before you do that try to format the flash drive on another computer but make sure it is not formatted with NTFS, format it with fat or fat32 so that amen can find it because amen will not see ntfs formatted flash drive. Hope that helps?
Have you tried another port on the back of the router? Also try a smaller flash drive like a 32 or 16GB if available as the router might not be available to see very large usb. Hope that helps!
Did you reserve an IP address for it? Did you install the standard version instead of the lite version? Are you seeing any errors in the system log specific to Diversion? Is there an IP address in the LAN menu -> Diversion tab and Ad-Blocking option? If you go to the LAN menu -> Diversion tab you should be able to turn on the pixelserv-tls 2.4 option there. Hope that helps.
Thanks for the great tutorial. Wasted time it seems though. It keeps counting blocked ads but I don't see anything blocked on TH-cam and anything more on the web browser than it used to be with a simple ad blocker
Are you sending all your network traffic through the VPN connection? If you are doing that it will bypass Diversion since the devices on your network will be sending DNS traffic to your VPN provider. If you want to not use your VPN provider DNS server under the VPN Client configuration dselect disable for the Accept DNS Configuration. That will send the DNS traffic to your local router. The only drawback is that you may have DNS leak if not using your VPN provider DNS. Hope that helps!
Just used this to install Diversion 5.0. It's a little bit different, but this video helped a lot. Thanks!
