Trying to jump start our second cutting hay - video shows our gamble to do so. We are a small family farm in the western mountains of Virginia. Subscribe for more farming videos - Thanks for watching!
I am watching closely, I like your approach to methodized organization 😉 Hopefully it will take care of that foxtail and your second cutting is great!! Thank you sir for bringing us along!! 👍🏻👍🏻😁😁
Sorry to hear about the dry conditions there, we had ours in May through June last year, hope it gets better. I have bit of fox tail and burdock along with perilla mint that I need to consider spraying! I hope it all goes well for you for the rest of the year, thanks and have a good day!
Doesn’t take much rain for commercial fertilizer to sink in but you have to have some otherwise a lot of that nitrogen evaporates. That’s why I like cattle manure. Interesting weed control strategy. ..extra fertilizer too.
Oddly enough, I spent a goodly amount of time reading about nitrogen evaporation and I get the impression it is over stated. If I understand correctly, once the urea breaks down and the volatile NH3 makes ground contact, there is a reaction with the soil that creates NH4 and is stable. A good rain is all it takes. From what I’ve read, the figure of 40% loss is not representative of field conditions where worse case is around 20% under condition, i.e. dry soil, heat and wind. All of this from reading on the internet, so it must be true…. A search on Agtalk has a lot of good reading on this subject too. Knock on wood, we’ve had plenty of rain, so - fingers crossed…👍
I’ve been debating on fertilizing mine. Same as you we are getting some rain now. I think clipping it might do as much good as anything and will stimulate regrowth. If I had a good way to do it I’d try that on some of my fields.

Excellent video hope your second cutting is plentiful
Thanks - fingers crossed…👍
Sounds like you have a good plan together for making some quality 2nd cut hay!
Fingers crossed - thanks!
Sounds like you really have it well thought-out! I think your gamble is worth it.
Thanks - fingers crossed!

What kind of spray will kill foxtail and not your other grass or are you depending on the clipping to just hold it back?
@@davidcassady8491 Thx - I don’t like to call out the herbicides I use on the web. Google foxtail control and you’ll find it.
What fertilizer did you use?
Urea - 46-0-0 and some 19-19-19
