  • What Started out as nothing more than a thought exercise has turned into what looks to be a viable design.

    dude this is so cyberpunky! just the concept of being able to PRINT OUT FINGERS is insane, and you managed to not only actually print them, but also make them functional. really cool dude!

      I have super high hopes for the powder metal sls printed versions. I'm hoping they are just the right weight, the plastic ones are way too light.

      @@missingpartsclub I imagine with most printed parts the longevity isn't good, but must be such a time saver when testing designs before milling!

      @@joshyc2006 besides, for those not having Ian's resources as skills, and pondering how affordable a 3D printer is, plastic pieces that wears out become easily replaceable by themselves.

      @@joshyc2006 The metal printing (SLS, EBM, binder-sinter) technologies that exist nowadays are capable of producing parts that are just as strong as milled parts. The main drawback is lower accuracy and surface finish, but any critical surfaces can be finished post-print.
      The convenience of being able to send your STLs to a company, pay them some money, and get your parts within a few business days made out of solid metal, is amazing.

    I'm not an amputee, doctor, or any kind of specialist, but as an artist interested in the different forms of mechanical prosthetics that could soon be available to us, I find this kind of stuff you're doing so fascinating, in regards to my own art and in the real world. Thanks!

    I really love how you just don't stop with trying to develop the perfect prosthesis. some people wouldve stopped at the first one you made but youve just kept on going and kept on trying to make the best hand you possibly can and I think thats just amazing. Thanks for the video Ian

      @@Alucard-gt1zf He didn't need to make a 3d printable one, his personal hand is made of metal. And he could also quite easily be charging a lot of money for his designs.

    It's interesting how this prosthetic also reflects how far 3D printing technology has come. If I remember correctly back to your older videos you used to have 3D printed fingers that you didn't really deem practical as a daily driver, but the technology has caught up to your needs (I see that Bambulab X1 back there!). Really cool to see how you take advantage of the changing 3D printing landscape.

    So, you are basically pioneering advanced hand cybernetics, I've been following you since you first started posting and honestly I'm astonished, this is Nobel Peace Prize level stuff, your work should be the standard for all prosthesis going forward, your creations compared to what's commonly available are amazing, how have you not been heavily commended for this up until this point is beyond me, cybernetics need all the advances it can get and you my good friend did what most of us thought impossible not more than a decade ago, you can do great things with this.

      Thanks! I too wonder what I'm doing wrong that I haven't been picked up by one of the major players. I interviewed with ossur's president of r&d a couple of years ago and really thought it was going to go somewhere, but unfortunately nothing... they're really excited about what I'm doing, but not excited enough to cut me a check. I'll get picked up someday...

    I've just come across your channel for the first thanks to the lovely TH-cam algorithm. This project is so encouraging and your commitment to help others is so refreshing to see. Personally, I was born without any fingers on my left hand and I never had any prior consideration for prosthetic replacements due to its costs in price. You've earned a subscriber and I also hope to start my own journey for creating my own finger prosthetics!

    You've come a long way man! I work in M industrial setting and I was always really worried about accidents and losing limbs or digits thinking it would be an end to a routine life. But after following your content I can now see just how well prothstetics can aid someone with missing body parts. What you do is really cool. I'm always exited to see what you're coming up with next.

    I'm not a subscriber, a regular viewer nor an amputee, I just ran into this video through suggestions.
    Both your prosthetic hands look very well thought off. The cheaper version, even out of plastic seems like such a wonderful idea. Even if only paired with a manual fastener to set its grip, it could give back dexterity to many who unfortunately lost digits.

      to get a patent in the us, you have to publicly release manufacturing instructions and then hire a team of lawyers enforce it

      If I've understood Ian throughout his videos, I don't think he wants any patents anyways. I think he genuinely just wants to help other amputees out there make the most of what they have left with some awesome creative technology.
      Edit: I believe he also shares his designs freely, it's up to others out there to take inspiration from those designs and alter them as necessary for their own unique body.

    I don't have missing fingers and I'd willingly buy this for a friend or two who need them. Heck, just to have a pair and share the news!
    You're doing a work that so few can do, and just seeing this as even a sliver on inspiration for people just makes it amazing.
    Thinking of the application of having lost fingers replaced with a controllable prosthetic as small as these just makes the world feel a lot better.

    about 2 years I was giving up on life I couldnt find independence with my disability (epilepsy) Felt hopeless. Machining always captured my interest it's truly an art. Well, thank you Ian for your constantly inspiring videos. You're a true hero of youtube.

    I have an interest in engineering and I love seeing how the human body moves so prosthetics has always been in my interest even if I have no use for them.

    The most amazing part of this is watching the casual dexterity with your metal hand. The plastic ones are amazing too, but while they are a bit large, you are super agille with them and they are so beautifully engineered.

    Incredible what you have already done to reduce part count! If you haven't heard of flextures or bending joints, it might be worth a look up. With 3d printing, making durable, flexible, and strong parts using a single piece of plastic is not a reasonable thing to make. Hope this helps! :) (Veritasium has some great intro videos on them)

    You are a saint and you are doing god's work. There is no excuse for charging amputees thousands of dollars to live a semi-normal life. Pure greed and pure evil. This is by far the greatest application of 3D printers. It's a god send to prosthetics engineers and the disabled.
    Even for the non disabled there are crazy designs for augmentation. I saw this project that gives you an extra thumb on each hand and the stuff it allows you to do is nothing short of insane.

    I've followed your project for what feels like (and probably is) years now and it has always been so compelling to me. And to see the way you've evolved the process of creating your prosthetics is really cool. 3d printing. I wouldn't have ever thought of that. Awesome!

    Dude...it is damn near the gun slinger from TF2... I have been seeing the progress of your hand here and there. I am just amazed at the work put into the device. The amount of tinkering and tuning must have been brain crunching.

    This is so awesome for people who need it. I still believe once prosthetics become better than our natural parts that people will willing start to replace body parts
