God bless this woman; She saved the raccoons life only to be mauled by it and suffer the loss of her arm... What such a beautiful heart! Happy to see such wonderful person getting a chance to experience use of her missing arm through the wonders of technology...
you bring up an interesting point. what if you attached a limb that you never had before, such as a tail. would the body adapt its own perception and accept the new limb?
I imagine the prosthetic arm would just copy the movements of which ever arm it is linked to in your brain. Not sure if it could work independently as if you had three arms, unless you just imagine moving it but not actually move your real arms. I wonder if you could have a telescopic prosthetic arm that lengthens as you imagine reaching out and stretching.
A tail we might have some connection with our coccyx, but I wonder how we would cope with a tentacle or even wheels in replace of legs. Would the notion of running simply make the wheels go fast? Perhaps there could be some sort of interface developed that transferred the human brain wave to the correct corresponding motion (as in running making the wheels go faster).
We visited the laboratory developing a bionic arm that isn't just controlled by its user's mind, but can also provide sensory feedback. *WATCH NEXT*: _The Dawn of the Killer Robots_ - bit.ly/2bpFfg1
It's crazy to see how fast technology is advancing. I'm only 20 years old and to see technology that I thought only existed in science fiction when I was a child brought into reality just blows my mind. It just makes you think, what new technology will we have within the next 50 years?
This is honestly so so cool. Problem I see now is figuring out a way to make the rigs more sturdy on the body to actually lift heavier objects just as jugs of milk, furniture, etc. And yeah the problem with bio hacking but it’ll most likely become an issue as this kind of thing progresses
mariano diaz Lol no one did, but you don’t have to get bionic limbs. Its only for those who lost their limbs from accidents. If it does end up with humans doing upgrades for fun, you still don’t have to. Like how you don’t have to buy a smart phone. I think it’s cool to see how science has advanced now. It will definitely help those amputees. Of corse they should make it affordable for everyone, but we will see.
This is awesome to say the least. To help someone like her get a chance at a new limb is very cool. Now apply this to more automated devices and you have so many applications that can even not involve a human being present at all except to direct a remote machine. Military, manufacturing, nuclear response teams, underwater exploration. All of these could be possible with just your mind.
I ride a motorcycle, and one of my greatest fears is to loose an arm or hand in an accident and not be able to ride never again. This is beautiful, this is what the world needs.
They literally were inspired by Deus Ex to do this by using what they know about mechanics? I guess it's interesting in a way, but I'm not sure if we are going to be advanced enough in ten years to make prosthetic arms carry implanted weapons for soldiers, and Navy Seals, etc. to use in the military and stuff like that. I mean, if they do become that advanced in the future, they will of course only give those implants to approved military soldiers, CIA, Navy Seals, anyone in those positions of life that are trusted with great responsibility. Not sure if where the advancements will be in ten years, lol
Prosthetic development is always awesome. As for the social ethics issue. If the prosthetic limbs are kept wired only, that prevents the risk of " hacking ". Just leave out the need for wireless sensors and other systems.
Ikr. Like all those millions of kids in Africa without arms, such a shame. We should really appreciate the fact that we have all our arms. Or not because it’s literally a fucking limb, something that 98% of people have.
To get an idea of what's being done, consider that most of the muscles used to manipulate the hand are located on the forearm. So this is using the principle that the nerves used to interact with the hand are still present further up the arm.

NEVER in history we could have that, in fact, all advances in technology where very incremental so that we never perceive the 'change'. However, now this is not true anymore. And now each year is going to be full of incredible breakthroughs, they will be so 'futuristic' that we will even call them miracles.

The only thing I've seen of late that makes me actually hopeful for the future.

It’s a bit counterintuitive though, all this funding and research going into building foundations for the future when we might not have a future if we don’t really start to tackle issues such as overpopulation, infertility and climate change :(
@@e.lattimer2238 you pretty much encapsulated my angst with the foreseeable future. Probably shouldn't get excited about this when we're probably not going to see it ever come to fruition.

There's plenty of funding and research going into other problems that you don't see. Except overpopulation, that's a myth. Population growth flattens out naturally as countries get richer.

Yes, the ability to conduct research that is more costly than the income of a single average person is what enables such wonderful inventions to be developed for the mass market, so that they can help many people instead of one; this is a necessary element of any functional society.
@Judge Gabranth What's so dick-headed about discussing a quotation that people found important enough to, well, quote? You do know what comments are for, right?

the movement of the bionic hand at the begining even when it's not attatched looks so seamless and natural it's amazing.
you got to love engineers, they dream up, design and build these amazing things, they made a robotic arm...... they made the wrong side.

HOLY COW! i just realized she is controlling the Bionic left arm with her right one
Ah shieeet, i bet that's why she was so underwelmed. In her head she was like: "You had one job..." xD
I don’t think the arm was made custom to her yet, I think it was an arm they had that they added the sensors to
I think they are testing and calibrating, that would not be her final arm, and it is easier to control it in "mirror mode" than to have her right side control an arm to her left side (opposite right).

LoL hes actually worth a lot if hes healthy and sold organs to the black market. A kidney, an eye, a lung... you can live with only one of each. Plus the amount he makes a year, what he has saved up and level of education. I'm sure hes worth more than that prosthetic.
TheRedstoneDiamond || TRD Yeah and you would know because you’ve made some random ass low level “robots”? I don’t think you understand how complex those arms actually are and how difficult it is to make them. I’m pretty sure if the thing only took 1.5k then they would’ve only spent that but clearly they didn’t.

True, the biggest difference the humans have over animals is being able to think rationally and overcome out instincts if the situation requires so
You might be surprised at how many humans can't overcome their instincts. Many instincts are chemical based and cannot easily be overcome logic.
I said able to. You can do anything you've set your mind to within a reasonable range of course.
God bless this woman; She saved the raccoons life only to be mauled by it and suffer the loss of her arm... What such a beautiful heart! Happy to see such wonderful person getting a chance to experience use of her missing arm through the wonders of technology...
While the intended use for amputees is a noble cause, I must wonder...
... what if I had 3 arms?
Violet Dirge I’d guess the brain wouldn’t take it.
Fair point. I most likely wouldn’t be able to properly link it to my brain like I would were it a prosthetic.
you bring up an interesting point. what if you attached a limb that you never had before, such as a tail.
would the body adapt its own perception and accept the new limb?

Lol no one did, but you don’t have to get bionic limbs.

Wow. Imagine a world where the technology becomes so advanced some might even intentionally replace their arms.
that is definitely going to happen within our lifetime, because the tech will become better than what we are born with.

What sucks though is that it is really expensive to get one, even when you really need one

@@itsnetts I agree
To get an idea of what's being done, consider that most of the muscles used to manipulate the hand are located on the forearm. So this is using the principle that the nerves used to interact with the hand are still present further up the arm.

I thought about this a couple of times and arrived to a conclusion. Recently science is advancing so fast that we wake up one day and can literally be astonished by what innovation is bringing. NEVER in history we could have that, in fact, all advances in technology where very incremental so that we never perceive the 'change'. However, now this is not true anymore. And now each year is going to be full of incredible breakthroughs, they will be so 'futuristic' that we will even call them miracles.
