- Late Night had a contest between two of their sponsers in Houston (both furniture stores) - Hilton the Chainsaw Guy wins and Conan takes him to get a professional commercial made in NYC.
Two notes:
1. The Houston NBC affiliate used to show Conan at 2:40 a.m. instead of 11:35 when it should have been on the air (right after the Tonight Show) and
2. This sketch has deep personal significance to Conan as this is where he met his future wife, Liza. She's the blonde on the creative team.
And yes, I did notice the juicy irony at the beginning when Conan mentions Jay Leno's pact with the American people...

The story in Bill Carter's book about this segment is cute. Conan goes to one of his staffers at the end of the shoot and asks him to get the advertising people's phone numbers so he can call them and thank them after the segment airs. Staffer just rolls his eyes and says, "The blonde, right?"

The camera-man even has a shot of Liza up close for an almost uncomfortable amount of time, as if to taunt Conan.
You could definitely feel the fact that there was something special going on in here. Conan in every remote without a doubt plays the part of trying to seduce beautiful women and failing miserably at it which he certainly didn't do here (I am certain of this because Lisa was so gorgeous in here and Conan just didn't try to make a stupid pass at her). He was rather suspiciously quiet where you can sense that he wanted to make a very good first impression. He was professional and kept his jokes civil. If this ain't the after effects of LOVE I don't know what else is.........LOVE COCO

When the cameraman panned across the group and stopped on her for the full length of the rest of the group, you can see Conan's irritation when he pans to him with his stone-faced expression and slight nod of "No."

Who among us has not met our spouse because the Houston NBC affiliate refused to air our TV show until 2:40 in the morning and we saw this guy’s wacky commercials airing during our show and we decided to make a top-quality commercial for him and filmed the whole thing and one of the copywriters took a shine to us?

I'm from Houston, this guy's commercials are legendary.
I had to Google to see if they were still around, and apparently they had Booker T in a commercial in 2015. Looks like they're doing pretty good.

Nenethegreat W: He doesn’t “hit” on other women, he just makes jokes and sometimes makes them uncomfortable with said jokes, although he does that with everyone. It’s just part of the show’s comedy.
And if you’re talking about Sona, you’re totally wrong. He does not have a crush on her. She’s his personal assistant, also a pretty funny lady, and I think Conan views her as like a sister since their interactions are like a brother and sister annoying each other, but laughing at the other’s jokes.
Also, considering Conan and Liza have been happily married for about 18 years, she obviously doesn’t mind the interactions he has with women in his remotes. And the fact that there have been no scandals in his professional or personal life confirms he has no eyes for any other woman. I think you’re just jealous he’s with a woman who’s perfect for him and whom he loves very much.

Yeah, that Leno comment is now very ironic. But fuck Jay Leno.....the thing I have always loved about this video is because it's where Conan meets his wife (she's in the video). Very sweet. Plus, that chain-saw guy is over the top. I love his accent. He's the kind of weird, real person Conan connects with.

Is it just me, or did anyone else prefer the original?? Honestly, when the ad firm played the new commercial, I actually thought they were kidding, and that it wasn't the real one they made. The music is so strange, and the entire thing feels like a parody. Hilton's store has absolutely nothing to do with that athleticism vibe, since the selling point of his furniture isn't really hard work, dedication or commitment to customers, it's that he has low prices. I think it would make more sense to compare him to lawyers or police officers, and brand him as someone who fights for the customer's right to find quality goods at fair prices, and not be overcharged or cheated. They could have done a whole ad posed as one of those classic law firm commercials, where Hilton would be saying things like, "Have you ever been overcharged for furniture or home goods?? If you have, don't hesitate to call now. At Hilton's furniture, we fight for your right for quality goods at fair prices," or something like that. Or they could have switched it up, and made an ad where police officers storm the store as Hilton is making a sale, arresting him for having "criminally" low prices. The slogan could be, "prices so low, it's criminal." Or maybe for something a little more fun, they could have showed customers in the store gasping and covering their kid's eyes, saying things like, "oh my god, he's taking it *all* off!!" Then the camera would pan over to Hilton posting lower and lower prices on his furniture, while onlookers act as though he's actually taking his clothes off haha. The slogan could be, "scandalously low prices." Basically, any ad that didn't seriously compare Hilton's furniture store to dedicated, accomplished athletes would have been better. 😂
It just felt so forced and ridiculous. Hilton's original ad was way more fun, sincere and memorable, and I think the advertisers should have continued in that direction while just improving the execution.
I am starting to wonder if maybe Conan purposefully came up with a ridiculous commercial idea to be funny, but made it seem like it was the firm's idea. If that were the case, though, then why did conan take it so seriously after seeing it? I also don't remember anyone in the audience laughing, and the firm members certainly didn't seem to think the ad was a joke, which makes me skeptical that it was supposed to be a parody...
Idk why I have so many thoughts about what was probably a fake ad; I guess I just got carried away while coming up with alternative commercial ideas 😂

You must be in Houston. He used to come at 2:40 am there back in the day. He even did a remote in Houston back in 1997 about that. He went around various places to see who was up and watching him at that time. Classic stuff. I was in college in the early days of Conan and my local affiliate was Detroit. They used to show it at 2 a.m. after a freaking rerun of Sally Jessie Raphael which seemed like such a horrible insult. I'm so glad Conan survived those early years. People forget how hard he struggled to find an audience and to stay on the air. If it were now, he would have been cancelled after a few months.
Also, it should be noted how bad that Houston pushback was, folks. Houston is in the Central Time Zone, not Eastern. So, in a perfect world he would have come on at 11:35...

In retrospect, the summer of 2000 was a best of times/worst of times for Conan. In the bad was Andy Ritcher leaving, and even years later on Howard Stern, Conan made clear how hard it was for him to lose Andy. On the best was Conan meeting the woman who would be his wife.
