After WW2 essentially the entire world was either in ruins or broke, US was the only super rich country and they were looking to the future already. Flying cars, the Jetsons, colored TV, and yes even television with smell were all part of that future. I cant recall the person that directed it but there was a famous movie/show and a New York Times best seller in the 60's about it.. that's where Conan got it from.
