Same. My mom and dad told me that when I was three I watched Aloha From Hawaii when it first aired in 1973. I don’t remember, but all I ever remember is Elvis. He still brings chills to me and tears to my eyes. His singing ability, along with the soul he possessed, was just on a level on his own.

I'm a 54yr old man,and this song still brings tears to my eyes! I grew up with an alcoholic Dad,but the Lord gave me a mountain,and i called that mountain Mom! About ten years before my Dad passed away,i let go of all that and would take him to his doctor appointments and do the running around for him! I am so glad i let go how i felt about my Dad! Him and my Mom are gone now,along with my brother and Baby Girl! Thought about ending myself a while back,and i heard a voice say,live for them! ❤
My favorite Elvis performance. The meaning is that he has survived many heartaches in his life and up until now he has not lost his faith and maintainedhope. Now that he has had his son taken away from him, he may be done. He’s telling God thart this mountain (meaning heartache and test of his faith) may be one test too many and too difficult to overcome. Its the biggest heartache he has ever had to face and he doesn’t know if he can make it over the mountain.

Bass player Jerry Scheff, lead guitarist James Burton and pianist Glen Hardin are still alive. Rhythm guitarist John Wilkinson has also sail to the West though.

Wow - what an amazing and powerful performance! First time watching it. When Elvis does a cover, he not only makes it his own, he does it in a way that you think he is singing from his own experience. In regards to the lyrics, he had some "mountains to climb" when growing up, (was poor, bullied, treated badly by others for being different) but as far as I remember he had a great relationship with his mother, and loved her very much. He was also religious and of the Christian faith. Hope that helps with the lyrics. Next time the Elvis train rolls along, I will be sure to board it. He did a great cover of Unchained Melody which might be a good choice for the next. Great reaction, nice to have you back, and I hope we don't have to wait so long for your next reaction.

Hi MrsPenPal, from a concert on June 21st 1977 exactly 8 weeks before his untimely death, ELVIS performed an INCREDIBLE version of his song 'Hurt'. Unbelievable performance well worth checking out!😀♥
Charley Hodge told me that after MLK and JFK assassinations and the turmoil of the 1960s Elvis' music shifted and if you listen to his song selections you can hear just how much he cared. In his 68 comeback special he sang "If I Can Dream" as the finale, which was intended to directly impact the "Human Rights Movement" and hopefully bring the start of healing in this country. Or at the very least help people to start looking and feeling there needed to be a change. In 1969 he released "In the Ghetto" which was another touching song that was written by Mac Davis. Mac said that Elvis changed the song by adding another line at the very in. The line he added was another "And his mama cried". Mac went on to say that he was very upset when he heard that Elvis added it but he also said that when he heard Elvis sing it he knew that it added a whole new dimension to the song that it really needed. If you haven't heard these two songs it is definitely worth listening to them and keep in mind all the turmoil that the country was in during the time he recorded them. It really changes or should I say that it brings a lot more meaning to the music. Thank you for your review. I truly enjoyed it.
It was at this time that he was going thru his divorce and would be separated from his child. Sad song, but stunningly sung as always. What a performer! Will always love him and the music he gave to this world.
Excellent reaction to the greatest to ever do it. You “get” Elvis, and I can see that you appreciate the whole all around excellence of Elvis. If you want to experience Elvis at his greatest, I’d suggest listening to some of his undubbed takes. Elvis was at his best just sitting and singing with his band. MrsPenPal- This is one of my fav Elvis songs. Ronnie Tutt was the one on the drums. He was Elvis drummer and a great one. You should react to Elvis song called Separate ways. Its a sad one but still very good.
Elvis sings about the struggles of his childhood and says that he overcame one hill after another, but his wife leaving him and taking his son with her is a mountain, not a hill. He may not be able to climb it. He mentions that the Lord gave him the mountain, with the idea being that the Lord gives people struggles for them to overcome and to grow. But, he may not be able to handle this mountain.
You use the word "stress" regarding certain words, vowels, etc. & I call it his "up-and-down" way of phrasing words. It's very obvious in the song "Tomorrow Never Comes" (th-cam.com/video/QhYtB7pjkS0/w-d-xo.html) where he takes a one syllable word & makes it into 2 syllables, & a 2 syllable word into 3 syllables as he goes "up & down" with the word. It has to be listened to very carefully -- some people just don't hear it or recognize it.The song builds & builds to a glass shattering finish. I think it was unique to him -- I don't know of anyone who did that or does that, & the best part of it is that it was a totally natural way for him to sing -- it was not forced or "put on."
In reality his twin brother died at birth, his mother lost a child, his father went to jail for a few months and yes, his wife left him after six years and took his daughter Lisa Marie with her. His songs are so believable because he connects to them.
I'm not seeing many comments explaining the meaning of the song so I'll go ahead and do that here. So in the verses it is describing challenges in his life that he considers "hills" that he was easily able to climb, aka challenges that he easily overcame. However, the chorus is describing whatever else is happening to him as a mountain because its going to be much harder to overcome than his previous challenges he's faced, aka its a lot harder to climb a mountain than a hill. It is never specifically said what this challenge is, leaving it open to the singer's interpretation. Hope that helped!

He may not be able to climb it. He mentions that the Lord gave him the mountain, with the idea being that the Lord gives people struggles for them to overcome and to grow. But, he may not be able to handle this mountain.

You use the word "stress" regarding certain words, vowels, etc. & I call it his "up-and-down" way of phrasing words. It's very obvious in the song "Tomorrow Never Comes" (th-cam.com/video/QhYtB7pjkS0/w-d-xo.html) where he takes a one syllable word & makes it into 2 syllables, & a 2 syllable word into 3 syllables as he goes "up & down" with the word. It has to be listened to very carefully -- some people just don't hear it or recognize it.The song builds & builds to a glass shattering finish. I think it was unique to him -- I don't know of anyone who did that or does that, & the best part of it is that it was a totally natural way for him to sing -- it was not forced or "put on."

I'm not seeing many comments explaining the meaning of the song so I'll go ahead and do that here. So in the verses it is describing challenges in his life that he considers "hills" that he was easily able to climb, aka challenges that he easily overcame. However, the chorus is describing whatever else is happening to him as a mountain because its going to be much harder to overcome than his previous challenges he's faced, aka its a lot harder to climb a mountain than a hill. It is never specifically said what this challenge is, leaving it open to the singer's interpretation. Hope that helped!
