Stevie Wonder ~ Living For The City 1973 Soul Purrfection Version

  • What is the Fourth Of July without a Stevie Wonder song? Happy Independence Day!
Stevie Wonder's music reflected the actual black life experience and "Living For The City" provided the audio for a cinematic scene that you could imagine in your mind. Stevie played every single instrument on the song and produced it himself with the help of two collaborators.
Bob Margouleff along with Malcolm Cecil helped to lend that experience by going out and taking "sonic snapshots" for the song. Taking his tape recorder to the streets of Great Neck, New Jersey, he went around recording the vignettes used in the song, like the bus engine starting up, the cop busting the errant protagonist and then the judge. He actually staged the arrest scene in the park with a real policeman.
The three of them spent the day in the studio recording the vocals. Bob and Malcolm came up with the idea of getting Stevie's voice sound increasingly angry so he sounded like a hardened criminal. They did things like telling Stevie he was out of tune and have him do it again and again. "One of the things he hates the most is when the tape operator stops the tape while Stevie was in the middle of a musical phrase, and he REALLY hates that and made him do it again. Then they got the "feel" they were looking for and with all the repeats, Stevie's voice got hoarse which is what you hear in the last verse. It was a brilliant move and the pair believe that "Living For The City" was one of the best tracks they ever did.
It was the second single issued from his 1973 opus "Innervisions" after the #4 showing of "Higher Ground" and the #8 peak of "Living" with both songs topping the R&B Survey.
I pulled out "Innervisions" this morning and the jazzy R&B sound of the album inspired me to complete this remix and get me out of my slump.
Hoping you enjoy this summer classic from Stevie Wonder...

I was 14 years old when this album came out on the upper west side of Manhattan
    My father suddenly died young
    the year before.
My mother myself and my brother survived living just enough for the city 🏙

A vivid memory of my young daughter over 30 years listening to this song in my car on my worn out tape of Innervisions. At the time 8:33 and the narrated story, she freaked out yelling and was so sad & angry - "Mommy, no, no!!! - why? why?" Thanks Stevie Wonder, aside from playing every instrument and your writing brilliance, you provided lessons on racial, social & economic injustice. Love and hope too. Biggest lifelong fan here. Things from my past. Forever grateful to Stevie Wonder.

The first album where Stevie Wonder had total creative control, and he ran with it. Never before had a song taken on racism as head-on as this. Not even Marvin Gaye's previous two albums (to this point) were so blunt.

boy is born in hard time Mississippi
Surrounded by four walls that ain't so pretty
His parents give him love and affection
To keep him strong, moving in the right direction
Living just enough, just enough for the city
His father works some days for fourteen hours
And you can bet, he barely makes a dollar
His mother goes to scrub the floors for many
And you'd best believe, she hardly gets a penny
Living just enough, just enough for the city
His sister's black, but she is sho'nuff pretty
Her skirt is short, but Lord her legs are sturdy
To walk to school, she's got to get up early
Her clothes are old, but never are they dirty
Living just enough, just enough for the city
Her brother's smart, he's got more sense than many
His patience's long, but soon he won't have any
To find a job is like a haystack needle
'Cause where he lives they don't use colored people
Living just enough, just enough for the city, yeah
    Everybody, city, yeah
(Living just enough for the city, whoa) Ain't nothin' but the city
(Living just enough for the city, whoa) Everybody, city, yeah
(Living just enough for the city, whoa) Ain't nothin' but the city
(Living just enough for the city, whoa) Living for the city, yeah
(Living just enough, for the city, whoa) The funky, cryin' city
(Living just enough, for the city, whoa) Living for the city
    Ain't nothin' but the city
(Living just enough, for the city, whoa) Everybody clap you hand together now
(Living just enough, for the city, whoa) For the city
(Living just enough, for the city, whoa) For the city, yeah, yeah
(Living just enough, for the city, whoa)
(Living just enough, for the city, whoa)
The bus for New York City!
Hey bus driver, I'm getting on that, hold it
    Thanks a lot
Wow, New York, just like I pictured it
    Skyscrapers and everything
Psst, hey, hey brother, hey come here slick
Hey you look, you look hip man
Hey, you wanna make yourself five bucks, man?
    Yeah, brother
Look here, run this across the street for me right quick
Okay, run this across the street for me
What? (Up against that goddamn car!) Huh? (Let's go)
    I didn't know, what?
Gimme your hands up, you punk
I'm just going across the street
Put that leg up, shut your mouth
Hell no, what did I do?
    Okay, turn around, turn around
Put your hands behind your back, let's go, lets go
A jury of your peers having found you guilty, ten years
    What?
Come on, come on, get in that cell, nigger
    God, Lord
His hair is long, his feet are hard and gritty
He spends the life walking the streets of New York City
He's almost dead from breathing in air pollution
He tried and fought, but to him there's no solution
Living just enough, just enough for the city (yeah, yeah, yeah)
I hope you hear inside my voice of sorrow
And that it motivates you to make a better tomorrow
This place is cruel, nowhere could be much colder
If we don't change, the world will soon be over
Living just enough, stop giving just enough for the city

I was born in early June 1968. Earlier that year Stevie sung in italian " Place in the sun" at the annual Festival of italian song taking place in Sanremo, and then the following year again in Sanremo.
In 1973, dad brought me this song from Aviano air base, where he worked as an internal bartender, it was since then i really got acquainted with Stevie.
Later in february 1980, by watxhing the " Send one your love' video made whit no shades, i' ve learnt he is blind.....i was 11 at the time and i felt so sad for him.
I've almost bursted in tears as i'm disabled fron birth an a wheleed chair not walking from birth and i know what it means myself.
    GOD BLESS YOU STEVIE!

Great song with realistic imagery, and uncanny accuracy of the failures of the "JUDICIAL" system in America today, and also, from times in the pass. A revelation to the mind, if you don't understand the meaning of high incarceration rates and recidivism. Stevie was quite aware of the problem when he produced this classic.
