I went to the Omega-Ruins in FFX today and a forgot about that Marlboro...
Reason why I didn't save was because I thought, the enemies couldn't kill my overleveled characters. Well, of course, I forgot to wear confuse protection...
I learned my lesson and used confuse protection and won. But the next fight was against enemies that use berserk and if they make everyone berserk, the fight cannot be won...

@@ShiakKazim35 well that's the issue when you're against a Malboro, if your characters are overpowered, if you're confused, your buddies will easily kill themselves...it happened a lot of time for me...so when I go to the Omega Ruin, I always got one of my buddies with a weapon with the ability "First Strike" so I can run away if the Malboro is too strong, if you got Masamune (the Ultimate Weapon for Auron) or at least having one of your gear need to get "Confuseproof" and "Berserkproof" or "Ribbon" but you need 99x Dark Matter...and it's pretty rare to get them...it's pretty hard to win a fight when your buddies goes Berserk, but it's more manageable than when you're confused

I think Tonberries were by far the most surprising enemy when first encountered. These cute, unassuming, little mole things that don't even attack you. They just hold their little knife and lantern and slowly walk up to you. Then, all of a sudden, without much warning, Tifa's dead. Then you get unlucky and it counters Cloud with Everyone's Grudge and he promptly dies as well. At least Malboros look like these horrifying, sentient mouths, Tonberries just look like something out of a kids cartoon about friendship and rainbows.

I'll never forget when I was grinding out my lvls in ff8 when on island closest to hell got attacked by a malboro. Fight starts, bad breath, Zell and quistis are n blinded and asleep. Squall is blinded and confused. Also he has 255 accuracy so he never misses even if blinded. Unfortunately, he has 100 deaths junctioned to status attack. It was very handy once shotting lesser enemies with 100% death spell of every attack. But zell and quistis don't have death guard of any kind. So squall one shots quistis, turns, one shots zell, and, since he has deaths on status atk not Def, he is able to one shot himself... And so he does. And malboro just watches the carnage.

Yeah there are exceptions like the bombs that are about equal to aggressive enemies at the place you find them, but then you get elementals and of course the entites. The elementals are one thing, they're mostly damage sponges, but that means you might have to move around to recharge your MP. Entites are an entirely different story. Don't let their level fool you. That's not your run of the mill level 30 enemy after all. It's a level 30 greater elemental, and they cast third tier offensive magic. I will never forget the time I was Firaga'd from behind because of my gambits. Sandsea, first visit, Salamand Entite spawned, somebody cast fire of a Yensa, Salamand didn't like being shown up by a noob in the magic arts. Wiped my active party. Switched in my reserve, and instead of holding the run button and noping out of there like a sensible person, I was like 'oooh, what hit me?' Two shot game over. Only found out later that it was aggro'd by the magic.

They show up in various places under specific weather, but have levels far above the area's normal range (ex. the Salamand Entite at the Ogir-Yensa Sandsea during clear skies). They're normally non-agressive, but will aggro if you cast spells when they're nearby.

Other great features of the Yan:
1: Comet could still fail when used by a Yan, but Float made it guaranteed to connect.
2: Virus Powder would inflict the Virus status, which makes the character not gain any Exp or AP until cured
3: Yan had the highest exp, so farming them was the fastest way to level endgame

Great Malboros in FFX is definitely the worst random encounter enemy in that game. If you want to complete the game 100% you need to capture 10 of them and they have 64,000HP. This means that you can't attack them with any celestial weapons (unless you're underpowered) and you have to make sure at least one character has ribbon. Capturing 10 of those things that always start the fight with Bad Breath was probably the biggest kick in the teeth for me

      Requires: Return Sphere x1

Just south of the village where you start in Final Fantasy II for the NES, there's a location called southern point, it's the 4 bottom squares of the peninsula. Just play around in there for a bit and you'll see the true horror of FFII random encounters

Malboros are one of my favorite enemies for their design and iconic status. It is however a real dick kicker at times. “Hey kids, you like status ailments?”

I remember grinding to level 99 with all characters by killing those sheep on the fairy island in ffix... they were tough, but with good strategy you can beat them and the exp they gave you was pretty hefty. And of course you can save game on overworld map, so even if you die it wouldnt be too bad..(which would happen at times, even with good strategy)

These are all pretty crazy encounters, but there's just something about dinosaurs casting Ultima that just hits differently lol

I think they even had 666 hp, unless that was changed like the name. Those things SUCK early on in the game, my best strategy was to run and revive the fallen characters

What about the Archaeoaevis from FFXII The Zodiac Age. They have 961,000 HP and are crazy strong. Was just wondering around the Zertinan Caverns at lvl 70 plus then just got owned.

Yeah there I was thinking I was in the clear after killing Catoblepas and I find these Aevis fighting some Cockatrice. "Easy pickings". Thank Zodiac Age for auto saves.

Yeah you could make some enemies seriously dangerous by upping their levels in ff12. Lvl 99 red chocobo was quite dangerous as well.

I remember playing Final Fantasy I on my PS1 when I was a kid. I was grinding at the end of Tiamat's dungeon because I needed money, but then I suddenly encountered Warmech. I think they buffed it in all the remakes (Origins too)

I always loved the unseen random encounters in this series. I always made my own head cannon on why i got into the fight in the first place. I also like how it gives you the feeling that you may have the biggest hang low around, but you could still get your shit rocked. Yeah it sucks when you get a team wipe, but that would be the reality if you actually lived the scenario. Real life doesnt let you see your fights, so you have to be prepared

Agreed. The random encounters are one of them things you love to hate. They really ONLY annoy me if I’m tryin hurry up and do somethin specific and they’re slowin me down

FF II was the king of random encounters, because enemy power shifted between areas so you could end up strolling too far and get stomped by an ogre xD. Good times

@@MathisR412 It is for a little bit, I just got through it because I wanted to fight Emperor. But the side characters are one of the best I've seen in the pre-FFVII era, also the music is amazing, so it's easier to overlook the bad stuff xD

In Final Fantasy 4 towards the last dungeon there was an enemy that would go by the name of Wicked Mask. This enemy would cast reflect on itself and your entire party so if you tried healing your party it'll just bounce back towards him. Plus the damage from the reflected spells like Holy or flare can deal around 2000-3000 damage. It is a very tedious fight where you have to target your spells at your allies and hope your reflect status hasn't expired.

The hardest random encounter in FFT is a group of red/black chocobos or monks.

Wasn’t there a random encounter in saga frontier where the enemy had a billion hp? Can anyone that played it confirm? I read it in a tips and tricks magazine ages ago if I remember correctly and I couldn’t believe it.

I remember my first run-in with a tonberry. It was before the internet and I'm busy playing away on Final Fantasy 7 when I run into one. I had not learned what I know now which is looks can be deceiving. So when it stabbed one of my characters and killed them? I paused the game and stared at the screen. After the shock wore off, I unpaused the game and ran for my life. To this day decades later, anytime I see the tonberry the first word out of my mouth is F***

That was my first thought when i saw tonberry... Wow look at this cute guy. Till he killed my character with one stab. 😢 I also ran out from the first fight real quick.
