  • MotoMan heads to Carefree, Arizona to drive the all new 2023 ‪@BMW‬ M2 and learns that dimensional changes in moving to the G87 generation of ‪@BMWM‬2 do have an impact on the way the M2 drives, yet not in the way one would think but they do pose a question about the most basic ‪@BMWUSA‬ M4 . . .

      I'm sure everybody wants that but is it even possible? You can delete the seats and the sound deadening but I think the CLAR architecture that underpins this car and something like a BMW SUV has too much flexibility and cost-savings in materials baked in that engineering it to be lighter and more focused isn't possible without making an expensive bespoke chassis like a z4. Keep in mind the new CSL 3.0 based on the M4, they had to make the body panels carbon fiber to get the weight down over an m4 csl.

    • @The_Stanman
      @The_Stanman ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jw6188 you're right, but that's issue with BMW's CLAR strategy. They deprioritized the ability to make lighter, smaller cars.
      Unfortunately it makes business sense given sales volumes (mostly SUVs) and cost savings from platform sharing.

      I'm a now retired mechanical design engineer and life long car enthusiast. A 500 weight reduction at anything remotely resembling this price point is pure fantasy, even with a gutted interior. Most of the weight is structural. Would need an all aluminum structure plus all carbon panels plus a stripped interior devoid of all luxury options (including AC) to even get close to that weight.

    Whoever defends M2 or 2 series as a whole really missed the point. Previous M2 is so great because it can actually fit 2 normal sized adult back there. New M2 is not only bigger and heavier, the rear seat space and roofline are actually worse than previous car. How is that possible? I don't know.

I realize there’s more bracing, it’s longer and wider, and and a disappointing 3900 lbs. but it seems like they’re going backwards. I searched for 2 years for a used 2018 M2 because I felt it was the perfect sized car with performance. At $73,000 there are much better choices to beat the performance stats than the 2023.🙁

      Different approach here. The engine is a HUGE part of this equation and is light years above other BMW inline sixes. Porsche on the other hand already has a great basic engine. • @rscholey85
      @rscholey85 ปีที่แล้ว

      The combustion engine is going no where, people aren’t going to put up with electric lots don’t even have a drive to charge it and as you say you don’t want an electric car but expect everyone to buy one, lots have the same view as you hence e fuels are being developed, the government can’t force the country to go electric they can’t make you buy a new car but they can make fuel cleaner, this is just like the uk government said go get diesels their better 😂, they are very short sighted and you will see a flip flop it’s not the first it won’t be the last

    Bmw is either really proud of this car or the head of engineering was Ai. They never have the engineers on site for these drives. You’re lucky you got to talk to him.

    Sorry, that car is not pretty. The F87 was much nicer looking. Subjective, yes, but there are some inarguable design flaws here, especially in the rear. FYI, the previous M2 (F87) also had a staggered wheel set-up. That's not new. Same exact torque as the F87 and quite a bit heavier.

    I'm sorry, it's just plain hideous. At least with the previous generation, the front looked good. The rear styling on all the old 1 series and 2 series is where they ran out of their budget money and just gave the cars an unfinished look.

    It's not as good looking as the old one. The front is probably one of the better looking of the current lineup, but still not great.

    1) Everybodys' mentioned (and George's don't mention...) porkish weight
    2) The guage/info screen a big "no"
    3) The machine-faced, two-tone wheels are not special and M-worthy, looking instead belonging on a 00's Hyundai or Subaru. Wth?
    4) While on the subject of wheels, though they're not the first to do it (1st and 2nd Gen NSX, 992 Porsche and others), staggered f&r diameters hardly needed, are a fad to suggest "exotic performance" in the spec, and like on the 911, 20/21" laughable on a vehicle (and overall tire diameter) that is--despite the weight complaint--not that large overall. This is not a Cadillac Escalade... (Wait a second, they're running 22", and some vehicles are running 23's now! Adios sidewalls!). By comparison, the significantly larger M5 is running 19's f&r stock or optional 20" f&r-and no diameter stagger. I don't know the metallurgy spec here and if they're running some kind of exotic material in the wheels, but bigger usually equals more weight as well...if so, back to point #1 above.

    Too FAT, too ugly, too much turbo lag, too much screen, and not enough steering feel. For all the money put into their cars it's mindblowing how BMW consistently fails to deliver a great vehicle, BMW has been lost for over a decade, time for new upper leadership! Sorry MotoMan, I respectfully disagree that the new M2 is a good car. Maybe you have been driving too many crossovers?! lol

    I guess I am on the other side of the spectrum. It looks terrible. The front grill has this "old man lost his teeth" vibes, the blackened out intakes look like they have fallen out and have never been replaced, all the proportions are just off. The back lights look like they have the Strabismus syndrome. Just looks like shit. This is one of the worst looking BMW's ever made, still beats a Fiat Multipla, tho ... I guess it's something.
