    Coetzee was deceptively quick for a big guy and had some serious mustard in his right hand... But a brawling, unbalanced style coupled with a tendency to fight 'chin up' meant he was always there to be hit.

    It looked like Gerrie was in trouble but he held up his guard and kept on pivoting away. All of a sudden, he begins throwing punches and Spinks goes down! These punches must have been of bonecrushing strength! One thing I noticed is that Gerrie always fully extended his arms at every punch. Gerrie was really tough to stand his ground against these famous heavy weights for many rounds. Amazing fighter. RIP Gerrie.

    I remember watching this live as a kid back in Cape Town. Always wondered why the heck they would start this fight at midnight local time. Little did I realize back then that this was to accommodate live TV broadcast in the US during their daytime hours

    • @amenitiessouth9376
      @amenitiessouth9376 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It had nothing to do with accommodating American television. The fight was not live, it was shown one minute after midnight Monday morning to accommodate South Africa's draconian Christian religion laws of the day that decreed no sport on television on Sundays.

    Leon was a pressure fighter even though he wasn't a big puncher. He came out fast and tried to jump on Coetzee early. He looked like he got a little winded after that first minute and he simply got caught. That first shot to the temple he never really recovered. Leon would bounce back from this and actually earn another title shot against Larry Holmes. He had a really nice win against Bernado Mercado who was a pretty good puncher himself. Bernardo Mercado had KO wins over Trevor Berbick and Earnie Shavers and Spinks was able to KO him. His win over Ali would be his highlight along with his Light Heavyweight Gold Medal in the 76 Olympics.

      Well, Leon Spinks won that gold medal as a light heavyweight, and was too small for the heavyweight division. Among other things, he just couldn't take a heavyweight's punch (as proved in this fight). Also, Spinks was a party animal, and rarely trained properly.

    Trying to figure our what Spinks was looking at in that last round he raised his head and looked at the ceiling and just Cortez slugged him with a left hook. Shawn Porter fights with the same style.

    Spinks has to be one of the worst fighters to ever hold a heavyweight title. Terrible style completely unsuited to the pro ranks. It's easy to see how far Ali must have slipped to have lost to him

      I think you mean when he got robbed of the decision vs Renaldo Snipes. Coetzee vs Snipes was in Tarrytown, NY, 10 rounder. Coetzee dominated, floored Snipes twice, yet somehow managed to lose a decision. Maybe the worst decision in heavyweight history.

    Spinks never should have got a title shot so early, he wasn’t ready, Ali would have got beat by many challengers that night. After the rematch Spinks should have been matched at lower level heavies until he got to 15 or 16 fights at least to build up his experience….. Always liked Spinks but he had too much too early … 🥊

Leon's career suffered because of Cocaine use after the second Ali fight.
