As an American I was, a "huge" Gerrie Coetzee fan in the late 70's and early 80's. I remember his fights with Spinks, Weaver, and Dokes, like yesterday! I don't understand his language but I hope he is well, and thank you for the memories Gerrie !

This is the strangest coincidence. I was standing outside having some lunch (Im in the UK) today and I recalled when I met Gerrie in around 1986. My father was doing some tiling work for Gerrie in one of his shops in Witfield and I was helping my dad. Anyway I returned inside after lunch and was working on my computer and just opened TH-cam to find a video on another topic and there stood this video on my screen about Gerrie. wow..
What a delightful interview and Gerrie is as humble as he always was - a true Gentleman and a worthy Heavyweight Champion who used his enormous talents to the best of his ability.
Ek was besig in my kantoor in Durbanville toe Gerrie en sy vrou daar instap. Ek was uiters verbaas. Hy het kom inskryf vir ń skipperskursus wat ek gereeld aangebied het. Dit was ń groot voorreg om hom te onderrig. Ek hoop dit gaan baie goed Gerrie. Met goeie herinneringe, At du Plooy
Gerrie was truly a great. I would always follow his build up to the fights, attend public sparring sessions and really enjoy watching his fights. I regret that he ever fought Mike Schutte and that stupid simple song Gerrie seer handjies Coetzee really irritated me. The moegoe who sang that song obviously had no clue what Gerrie was going through in his fights subsequent to those injuries. What guts and determination. Still my champ!
Gerrie will always be my hero boxer. I remember the big poster on my bedroom wall right next to where I slept, he had on a red boxing shorts with his fists slightly blocking his face. A true gentleman. I always used to watch him fight and it always seemed like he felt his opponents pain with every blow he rendered. Like he felt sorry for the guy. I love Gerrie and I thank you guys for this video, at least I know my boxing hero is still around and well. Gerrie, my CHAMPION for life. The days when sports rules was abided to, no politics and not for the love of the money, but the sport and the best entertainment for the crowd. You go Gerrie.
Emjay Bennett I felt the same way about Gerrie . A true champion and gentleman. But there were politics aplenty in boxing then as well as throughout the history of the sport. There were protests in America trying to stop Gerrie from fighting here because he came from South Africa and their apartheid society. Ironically, he was opposed to those policies and considered himself to be fighting for South Africans both black and white and in fact had the overwhelming support of the black people of South Africa. Most rooted for him against America’s African-American heavyweight champions. That was not the case for many white South African boxers. He also never considered himself a “white hope” champion but rather a true people’s champion for all people regardless of race or country. A truly good man. Glad he’s doing well these days.
Legends never die! And you don't need special skills to spot one! He was a warrior and legendary, never seen him before but I can see his character....
Gerrie, a decent humble man, good boxer as well, just the confidence issue, but hey, we all have a flaw, he still scaled the heights with his. Respect.
My Afrikaans is a little swak, and wish there was English subtitles or translation. Gerrie you did all South Africans proud all those years ago. Remember Sun City fight and a few of the others. Gerrie best of luck for the future and God bless your family.
My brother Jimmy and I met you during the interval of a Miss South Africa final at the Colossuem in Johannesburg and we asked you to select your choices and you picked 3 contestants and 2 hours later they ended 1st 2nd and 3rd in the exact same order. Will never forget meeting you.
Ek het Gerrie se boksloopbaan gevolg vanaf 1974. Sy beweeglikheid vir so ’n groot man, was uitstekend.
It was sad that while South African Gerrie Coetzee was fighting all the top heavyweights from America in the late 1970's and 1980's for hundreds of thousand purses, Gerry Cooney was getting all the attention from American Boxing fans & making millions. So, I was very glad when Gerrie won the W.B.A. title from Michael Dokes in 1983. And he made it clear he wished to be everyone's champion right away! I wish him the best of luck in his retirement.
Ongetwyfeld een van die grootste talente van sy era. Ek is baie dankbaar vir die opwinding en plesier wat Gerrie my in die bokskryt verskaf het. 'n Rustige, voorbeeldige man met albei voete plat op die aarde.
God Bless you Gerrie. I remember getting up at 4am one morning to watch Gerrie vs Leon Spinks. My dad was in the lounge and asked me to make coffee as the first round was about to start. I remember going to make the coffee just before the fight was about to start. When I came with the coffee into the lounge my Dad told me he is going to bed. The fight was over. I did not see anything.🙈
My girl cousin laughed at me because I was so excited to see Gerrie ͏win that fight. I had heard about him and his “bionic hand” but had yet to see him. I liked Leon Spinks to and still do but the announcers were saying Leon was gonna come out and knock this guy Coetzee’s head off really fast. I believed them, I mean he had just beaten the Great Muhammad Ali recently, and I was so shocked when in fact it was a first round knockout but it was Gerrie that scored it almost knocking Leon out of the ring! Just the cockiness of the announcers and how soooo wrong they were made me a life long fan of Gerrie’s! Really glad he accomplished his goal of winning the WBA Heavyweight championship of the world. His story is one of never giving up through adversity (all those hand operations) perseverance (keep trying through the losses, some unfair ones) and defying the experts (the Spinks fight) Lessons for us all as we make our way through life. I am a fan of the man for life!
