Reaction was cool! Some insightful stuff.
some notes:
With the mod version we can actually update particles more than 20 times a second. We run it at 60FPS for the best AI detections, but update it in game at 30 atm. Though for vanilla we just display 20 times a second.
For the height thing:
I'm 6'2, plus my beanie, plus my shoes, plus the camera angle. It's accurate. Sometimes the floor level isn't perfect so it can add a little bit by the person not being perfectly on the ground, but other than that it's perfectly to scale.
as for the practicality, you gotta wait for my future videos :), the tech I showed you is months behind other stuff that we've done, and there's so many awesome videos coming.
as for using text display, we have used block display and the frame rate is way worse. The particles have basically no FPS effect with how we display them, but entities are far more resource consuming.
as for the visuals, quality, and camera related stuff: a lot of this was recorded months ago so stuff is and will be better, but it's pretty good as is. Like PS1 hagrid hahaha, good for the time being. When I said "The bottom of their feet", I just mean when they lift up their feet. We have cameras at nearly floor level pointing upwards, so we can get the bottom of their chin, armpits, and even the bottom of their shoes if they lift up their feet at all.
the particles render under water, it was just a setting I had on (my particles were on a lower quality setting haha)
they can move fast, most of these shots are from them being in there for hours though, constantly walking and punching and running etc, so they're probably just sluggish. Walking is the biggest hassle though, because every 1 block is over 3 feet in real life you have to walk. There's solutions though, and when you're a larger size it actually becomes a non-issue all together.

Oh that's sick that you have a mod that lets you update it faster. That's kinda crazy I wonder how you did that.
Ah I guess with the height thing that makes sense. Speaking of floor level not being perfect, at 7:39 you can see the floor in the point cloud, but then a bit later it disappears. How does it differentiate between the floor and person? Is it a matter of just getting the values right (similar to chroma keying something)? or is removing the floor part of the calibration process?
I'm very interested to see what you have in mind for practicality, I personally still have my doubts about it ever being practical, but considering you guys have already taken this into account I'm very excited to see what you came up with :o (I am expecting you to do ur boat clutch in the rig at some point!! :p)
I guess text displays could be more laggy yeah, I forgot where, but I think I've seen a video of a project where someone made npcs out of text displays (by making cubes with them and then using those cubes to build a player model). So I expected the performance impact to not be too bad.
To be honest though, I think visually it already looks really good, like I said in the video, at some point you kinda stop seeing particles and actually see the person, which is already massively impressive. Also in the intro you showed some clips from when it "sucked" and it was a bit glitchy, but I actually really liked how that looked.
And yeah I get that movement is a problem, is there any way to really sprint though?

I get what you're saying about how practical this will be, and for someone without the money to do it, it obviously won't be that practical. But I think your forgetting that this was only a video to introduce what he's been working on. I think he made it pretty obvious that it's not finished and there is so much more he can add to it and improve on it. He even said it himself that it's not polished so he's obviously still improving upon it.

Just because I'm pointing out issues doesn't mean I'm hating on him. I think this is really impressive, but I feel like it has some flaws which I'm just pointing out.
I do some minecraft development myself and I know how difficult things can be, no project is flawless. I could be sitting here and glaze the entire project, but I think it's much more valuable for everyone to hear my ACTUAL opinion on it.
Just because I'm pointing out these flaws doesn't mean that I don't think this is extremely cool, because it absolutely is!
The things I say might come across as harsh, but that's because they are quite big issues. That doesn't mean that I don't also think other aspects of this project aren't insane.
