One thing I thought was so interesting is how much editing and cleaning up was done to create the finished theatrical product, as I’ve never seen any extended cuts or behind the scenes of any movie really. This biggest thing that stood out to me was how the music changed in some scenes. For me, as for most fans I’m sure, the score is really what made the experience. And in the extended versions you can tell they went in and made little tweaks to where the music lines up or maybe put in a certain phrase in a different spot, and surprisingly it really shows on the finished product.
The best example for this is of course when the Orcs are sneaking up the river to take osgiliath. I’m the extended version, I believe we actually get a flashback of when Faromir actually finds boramirs horn in the river (hopefully this is the scene, it’s been about 2 months😅) as this scene led right into the attack on osgiliath, at this point, the music had already working towards a climax, ultimately leading right when faromir makes the first strike.
But as we know in the theatrical version we don’t even have that flashback!! So this directly led to them being able to cut out the music entirely and totally changing the mood of the scene from an inevitable, head-on battle, to a stealthy “element of surprise” type attack. And this of course was a perfect way to depict that scene. Of course this is just my speculation and maybe they had other motives but I just thought that was really cool to think about. hats off to peter and his team for the best films ever made👌🏻

The effects also got a treatment. They weren’t entirely re-animated or anything like that. And there wasn’t any “George Lucas” treatment. I guess the best way I can think to say it is they fit with the live stuff equally as well as they did before. So if you compare live vs CG on Blu-ray, and live vs CG on 4K - those comparisons within their formats will be about the same, if that makes sense.

The two companies that it would make more sense to be behind it are Wingnut, Peter's production company, and Park Road Post, the local post production house that is wall-to-wall with cutting edge tech.

If you want LOTR to look like the Hobbit, it’s for you. Because it’s not LOTR in 4K. There is a lot of bad Digital Noise Reduction. They removed the grain from the CGI ( back in the days they added it to make it looked like it belonged in the movie) and they changed the grading of the whole pictures. It looks like the Hobbit. And it’s not a compliment. The job was rushed for Xmas, wait for the summer release to see if they improved things after le backlash they received.
Edit: I forgot to talk about the audio. It’s mostly good but some sounds are missing from some scenes. Such as the end of the fight between Saruman and Gandalf.

even tho i learn towards the original formats
i dont really think this is a mindless gimmick like the bluray versions... jackson worked on these himself in the editing room

Simply my favourite movies ever, they just totally draw me into a fantastical & effecting world, so happy I secured myself the steelbook versions of the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit, they are simply gorgeous editions, & yes I can confirm the image is beautiful all the tiny details and the colours over previous versions, proves just how much went into creating these movies & now perceivable like never before.... just WoW, & the sound in Dolby Atmos is truly astounding, enveloped by sound like the rain falling from above & the klang of swords clashing, I could go on.... just perfect, full kudos to Peter Jackson et al for putting in such a wonderful loving effort, completely & wholeheartedly agree with your review, fans are in for real a treat 😊

The extended version made me realize that Boromir wasn't all that bad. He sincerely cared for Gondor and the Hobbits.

Worth it just for the HDR.
Brings a film to life with the warmth of faces and glow of fire etc.
