  • Welcome to Revolutionary Motion! In this video, we explain to you why you should learn a slice serve instead of a kick serve. Understand the applications and advantages of a slice serve and use this serve to its full potential to double fault less and open up the court like a pro. Happy playing,
    Kata and Clemens

Hi, that's what I'm already doing, but I also wanted to learn the kick serve, so it's good you pointed out the latter is useless until you get to a certain level (which I probably won't). I'll keep trying to make my flat and slice serves better instead. Thanks a lot.

A kick serve isn't that hard to learn, it's just that the instruction other there are horrible. Everyone and their mother show you the same 3 progressions that don't make sense. They will do one thing, and then completely different biomechanically in the actual kick serve they serve in the end of most instruction video. And it's not about your level, you absolutely doesn't need to be 5.0 in order to hit a kick serve. A 3.0 with a half decent kick serve would be super effective at this level.

The slice is actually created by brushing the back of the ball outwards (& slightly upwards / “northeast” of the ball for a right hander) rather than the side of the ball.

You are correct but it is easier for most people to execute the slice when they exaggerate the motion they are trying to use by thinking of it in a more extreme way. ;)

Kick serve doesn't have to be super good to be effective at the recreational level. For most, it serves a purpose to be a reliable second serve, and as an effective variation to place the ball around the box. To be fair, it's rare to encounter players who has either a super good kick serve or a super good slice serve. So to be effective it's better for recreational players to learn how to place the ball. Kick serve has its place because it's much easier to place the ball to the returner's backhand side on certain occasions. For me it's been easier and more reliable to do a little bit of kick than slice. I agree that a good slice with decent pace and lot of horizontal movement is highly effective, but I don't think it's necessarily easier to learn for most people. Some people may find it's natural to produce slice, some may find kick more natural. I think either is fine as long as one can put the ball in the box consistently and can move the ball around the box to make it not so predictable for the returner to attack.

hitting around the ball ( at 3.38 ) or racket moves around the ball ( at 3.45 ) :):):) so you actually telling people to do the opposite of what youre doing ( hmmm ) !!!!! then at 4.11 you stop the video and you arm swings direction outside post so NOT forward and you have pronation meaning NO around the ball !!!!! ( which is acvtually how you make a slice serve when you want to have a high level ) so if you want be revolutionary then maybe first start to understand what happens in the strokes you are showing but thats just my opinion and advice between coaches

I think this demo is lacking wrist snap for better slice

The wrist snap is actually happening when the racket starts moving up. It simply doesn't look like as much of a wrist snap because pronation is applied a bit less due to the nature of the slice :)
