This is the only liveaction "remake" of the classic movies I accept because it at least tells a different story with another angle. I'm a sucker for whimsical fantasy and this hits all the right notes. A lot of people dislike this movie because they gave a sob story to a cool villain who didn't need one -- but I can accept this as a retelling and admire it separate from the OG. Quick edit: Only thing that lacks in this to me is that Maleficent never transformed into her badass dragon self. I'm guessing they didn't want to do it again after giving Enchanted the parody in 2007? But c'mon! That was seven years past by the time this came out! Oh well.
Here's some interesting research I found on the actual story: Apparently the spinning wheel is a metaphor for growing up. The Curse was essentially Maleficent saying, "She will be given the chance to grow up." By burning them, the king was saying, "She will NEVER grow up!"
when you asked why maleficent would care for the baby, i saw it as maleficent actually ended up involving herself in her own curse as she mentioned "the baby shall indeed be loved by all who meet her" and she ended up unknowingly caring for aurora
14:38 She couldn’t reverse it because of how specific the spell was. She said something along the lines of “no power in this world can reverse the curse”, she is part of the world, so she cannot reverse the spell because she excluded herself from the beginning.
In the scene where aurora falls off the cliff and then goes to maleficent, all the children they auditioned were afraid is her with the makeup on, so Angelina Jolie’s daughter was cast since she wasn’t afraid of her own mother
I've always found it interesting the direction they went with King Stefan in this movie, a dark man who tried to kill Maleficent and ends up violating her just to be king and when he is reunited with his daughter he's cold to her since in the original animated Sleeping Beauty he's really chill, really misses his daughter and even gets annoyed with King Hubert for wanting to marry her and Philip off so quickly like man really flipped sides in this one 🤣 also skumps 😌
17:52 Lmao Welchy it's pretty common for ALL the rooms to have servant's entrances. It makes it easier and faster for them to do their jobs around the castle without having to go thorough the complicated regular corridors (plus there's certain things you typically wouldn't want visitors to see your maids doing, like carrying around the dirty laundry and stuff).
Hey, to be honest, Philip was from the original animated movie. But at least he has a name. For instance, we have to search Disney hidden lore to learn that Snow White's prince even has one, and it's confirmed that Cinderella's prince doesn't.
It's quite clever that during casting the curse she says: "beloved by all who meet her". Nice foreshadowing that also Maleficent is going to care for her. I also love how they made "Once Upon A Dream"-aspect come alive without any romantic aspect and that this movie is more about "family is more than blood/mother's love"-stuff. Your reaction to "fairy godmother"-part is so accurate. There's something so funny and heartbreaking about that line at the same time. Thanks for this reaction, this really is such an underrated live action. I hope you'll watch the sequel as well.
I really love this movie. As cool as Maleficent is, and I don't think evil villains need to be "redeemed", I really like how this movie at the very least is a completely different take on the story, and not a complete copy of the animated version, unlike almost all the other live action Disney movies. The world feels really magical too.
For anyone who wonders, the reason she looks out for aurora is that the curse won’t work if she isn’t alive. But in “reality” Maleficent fell for her own spell, Aurora is to be “beloved by all who meet her.
"why does she care about this baby?" ITS A BABY???? if you saw a baby crying on the street and no one was helping, would you be like "thats rough" LMAO
This is my favourite life action Disney movie. And I loved it even more when I found out that the little kid that ran to Angelina and hugged her was actually Angelina's daughter. They couldn't find any other child to do that scene because they were scared of Maleficent.
I had the honor of seeing Angelina’s dress, staff, and head dress in person! I worked at Epcot in the France theater, and the theater pre-show lobby had cases of on-loan costumes from French plays, operas, and movies (Hunchback, Three Musketeers, Cinderella, Phantom of the Opera, Les Mis, La Boheme, La Trivata, Beauty and the Beast, and Maleficent). I always liked to joke about how thin she was, considering she had a child (who is the actual baby Aurora in the film btw) a few months before! She is VERY thin, like most guests probably wouldn’t have gotten her dress pass their thighs! She’s a true master of her craft and is a phenomenal actress!
I definitely recommend the original animated film "Sleeping Beauty" from 1959, it is cliche but I think you'll like it! And don't worry, Maleficent is still just as cool in that one too 😌
Saw someone say they didn't like the movie bc they turned Maleficent from a petty villain to a 'crazy ex girlfriend' and said she had no reason to curse Aurora lmao. It was crazy to me that someone got that from the movie
This was *such* a good movie. I was especially a fan of how good the magic looked in this movie lol - Maleficent's spells & her wings were always so visually stunning, exactly what I want to see in live action Disney movies.
I really love this film and the angle they went with , the only thing I didn’t like is they made the king soooo bad to justify her actions and over shadow what she did , it would of been cool to see that they were both in the wrong but find away to to not have to make him so evil as it still doesn’t take what she did
He was much better in the original film. He kept his hope and therefore remained sane for all those sixteen years. Plus, he was actually a good father and truly cared for what his daughter felt.
@@chaoticmind4886 Yh I have seen sleeping beauty, but I love this film as it gives maleficent a more in depth character and shows her growth but I just think making the king too deranged undermines the fact that she cursed an innocent baby but the character development she goes through , causes to the audience it’s like saying Yh what she did was bad but he is obviously way worse so there for she’s not that bad, they could of just lessen the evilness to the king abit
@@millieboon Really? I don't see it that way. I think the film portrays them both as wrong, and both knowing that they are wrong. Stefan knows that stealing her wings is wrong, but he's blinded by power. Maleficent knows that cursing the innocent child is wrong, and she still does it because she wants revenge (which to be fair, makes her actions a lot easier to justify for lots of people). Now I personally see all of Stefan's actions after that as responses under stress/trauma. He knows he's done something unforgivable to this all powerful woman, and he thinks it's only a matter of time before she takes something from him too. And perhaps he's thinking more along human lines of thought here, because he probably thinks she won't stop until she takes *everything* from him as another human probably would have done. So he continues to pile on the offenses, hoping to get rid of her before she can hurt him. However, all she ever did was curse his daughter because she deemed it an equivalent exchange: taking something he loved and cherished for years and making it inaccessible to him. After that, all she did was defend her own land. Him living under that much stress and paranoia is definitely going to take a toll on someone's mental state, so I think his decline made sense. Not to show him becoming "more evil", but to show that he was becoming more and more desperate to escape the threat of her ruining his life and kingdom. (Also in the narration they started the movie off by saying the story was slightly different that the one we know, which means they intentionally made him seem different than the caring well-adjusted hopeful king in Sleeping Beauty. In this universe that story was probably written by bards of the kingdom, so it would make sense that the two stories are kind of different since the bards a) wouldn't know the full story and b) would twist the truth in favour of their king regardless.) Anyways that's just my opinion, thank you for reading if you got this far and have a nice day/night/time wherever you are!
what i like about this movie is the same reason i like WandaVision so much, that extremely powerful magic comes from a place of pain, and the way she falls for her own spell, like she says "beloved by all who meet her" and she never thought that would include her.
When this movie 1st came out I was like she is the best Disney villain of all time then you also realise that like it was kind of like a regular story but I get had a lot more depths to it like you're more showed why the dark varied in what she did then just is who like she was evil
11:45 That's her real life daughter, because she was the only one who wasn’t scared of her in costume. That literally is the mother that's been raising her all this time.
wooo I made it but also, I love this movie so much definitely one of the top live actions that they have done so far! But also, the young version of Aurora is played by her daughter because she is the only one who wasn't afraid of her in the horns.
Saw this one in theaters with my best friend when it came out. Hands down, the best of the live action Disney movies in my opinion. It’s such a good comfort movie
10:19 Maleficent doesn't kill her because she understands that the sins of the father are not the sins of the son,or in this case of the daughter. she does love the Aurora but she hates her father and she wants the father to suffer, but she's not going to kill the girl before she turns 16. This is all to make sure that the father's suffers. she's going to take care of the girl, and she's going to make sure she makes it to 16 so that the father ever does meet her and if she ever does get pricked by the spindle (which she does), he's gonna suffer
Yesss this movie is SO underrated, especially that twist! (The original sleeping beauty has the three other fairies be way less annoying (it's more their film than anyone else's, everyone else just gets standard fairytale characterization), but I understand why they changed them for this one - the OG trio would have never stood for king Stephan cutting a fairy's wings off (Merryweather especially would have kicked his ass). Also, in the original, it's MALEFICENT who turns into a dragon, which is the only thing this version does wrong imo (diaval is great, but maleficent is the iconic Disney dragon, c'mon.)
Despite the messy story line, I still love it because it’s a reimagining of one of my ultimate favorite childhood movies “Sleeping Beauty”. If you plan to check out the original animated movie, you’re doing the Lord’s work 😂 the art, the animation and the music 🤌🏼 unlimited chef’s kisses lmao

6:54 I *just* realised that the actor of Diaval also plays Mr Darcy in Pride & Prejudice & Zombies lol. I'd love to see a reaction to that film up on the channel as well sometime.
17:22 How can you blame her? If someone who had taken care of me turned out to having cursed me, I'd also get hurt and leave that person. Plus Maleficent maybe never told her her name.
Agreed. Maleficent deliberately deceived Aurora into thinking she was not the "evil fairy" who cursed her, but instead her "fairy godmother" and deliberately waited until the last day of the curse to tell her the truth believing that she would never see Aurora awake again after that anyways. Throughout the film Maleficent was a jerk.
@@PyroDrew I mean I don't blame Maleficent. She was so hurt she didn't know what she did, but I don't blame Aurora either. I think they both had a sane reason to act like they did.
@@stellaberndtson3406 It's sane to want revenge. It's insane and/or evil to deliberately attack and put an innocent child into a coma. Maleficent quietly left Stefan alone for 9+ months after he betrayed her. She only invaded his castle after she learned Aurora was born and then attacked baby Aurora. That's not sane.
@@stellaberndtson3406 Agreed. Except, if Stefan truly loved Aurora then his kiss would break the curse. If Stefan didn't truly love Aurora then the curse doesn't really hurt him. The movie indirectly implies that both Aurora's own birth mother and father (as well as the 3 pixie fairies) never had "true love" for Aurora. Also at the end Maleficent could have saved Stefan from death with her vast magic (telekinesis, shapeshifting, etc) and/or wings after he "accidentally" fell off the tower since Aurora never wanted her father dead, but Maleficent preferred him dead over anything Aurora may have wanted.

Maleficent was always my favourite villain. I was so scared of what a live-action/origin story might be... But I was pleasantly surprised. Maleficent is still my favourite villain.
regarding her being unable to take back her curse, hatred and jealously is a very strong feeling which i think then translated into the intensity of her powers during the curse, the feeling of betrayal and jealously can be quite powerful

Oh well.
Here's some interesting research I found on the actual story:
Apparently the spinning wheel is a metaphor for growing up.
The Curse was essentially Maleficent saying, "She will be given the chance to grow up."
By burning them, the king was saying, "She will NEVER grow up!"
Oh wow...that is certainly interesting. I wonder how exactly a spinning wheel references growing up.
@@chaoticmind4886 well, it's more like the inevitably of time and how things change because of it, but growing up is implied.
when you asked why maleficent would care for the baby, i saw it as maleficent actually ended up involving herself in her own curse as she mentioned "the baby shall indeed be loved by all who meet her" and she ended up unknowingly caring for aurora
Her scream when she realised he had violated her by stealing her wings was gut wrenching🥲
i remember loving this movie as a kid because of the platonic true loves kiss. as an aroace i LOVE it when they show the importance of platonic love
SAME
Omg SAME!! I really love the whole true love kiss, but it isn't romantic, because love has many different forms, that's how I like to think about it!!
eh I think it was more a Frozen thing with familial love(even though not blood related) than purely platonic
@@mikemorro140 it’s a Lilo and Stich thing before the “Frozen” movie even existed!

True
Oh what a surprise, Umbridge sucks at bringing up children, I am shook'th.
LOL
Top tier movie. I think most people find the tiny humanoid fairies terrifying, it's just part of the movie experience at this point
You with fake Scottish accents is me with fake Australian accents 😂
Annoys the life out of me 😂

She couldn’t reverse it because of how specific the spell was. She said something along the lines of “no power in this world can reverse the curse”, she is part of the world, so she cannot reverse the spell because she excluded herself from the beginning.
It’s actually “no power on earth” but you’re still right.
(Sorry if I’m being annoying, I just rlly adore this movie)
"Kill the baby??"
Literally very next breath "aww kill that baby!"
🤣🤣🤣
In the beggining she doesn't wake up cuz he drugged her with the water, then took her wings.
So messed up in every way.
Historically it's the French variation of Henry. It's pronounced the same as the adjective awnry
I love when he said:
"What did he steal? A leaf🍃 "
"That looks like ice 🧊 "
😂😂😂
😆
I really love this movie.
As cool as Maleficent is, and I don't think evil villains need to be "redeemed", I really like how this movie at the very least is a completely different take on the story, and not a complete copy of the animated version, unlike almost all the other live action Disney movies.
The world feels really magical too.
For anyone who wonders, the reason she looks out for aurora is that the curse won’t work if she isn’t alive.
But in “reality” Maleficent fell for her own spell, Aurora is to be “beloved by all who meet her.
so true
"why does she care about this baby?"
ITS A BABY???? if you saw a baby crying on the street and no one was helping, would you be like "thats rough" LMAO
All you need is a buddy at the end and you would have made zuko reference
Of course! But as this was supposed to be a *villain*, usually they have no remorse 😂
@@Welchy There r villains with morals tho.
@@sophiaescareno8410 not villains! Anti-heros!
@@earthing3696 Yes there r villains with morals
She didn't wake up when he took her wings for one very simple reason. He drugged her.
This is my favourite life action Disney movie. And I loved it even more when I found out that the little kid that ran to Angelina and hugged her was actually Angelina's daughter. They couldn't find any other child to do that scene because they were scared of Maleficent.
In the original movie from 1959, the prince was called Phillip, so they just stayed true to that
I had the honor of seeing Angelina’s dress, staff, and head dress in person!
And don't worry, Maleficent is still just as cool in that one too 😌
Yes, that would be good right before Maleficent 2.
that's..the movie he was talking about at the end. unless there is another animated film called sleeping beauty i am unaware of
Saw someone say they didn't like the movie bc they turned Maleficent from a petty villain to a 'crazy ex girlfriend' and said she had no reason to curse Aurora lmao. It was crazy to me that someone got that from the movie
Maleficent didn’t wake up when Stefan took her wings, because he drugged her. The drink he gave her was drugged.
In this universe that story was probably written by bards of the kingdom, so it would make sense that the two stories are kind of different since the bards a) wouldn't know the full story and b) would twist the truth in favour of their king regardless.)
Anyways that's just my opinion, thank you for reading if you got this far and have a nice day/night/time wherever you are!
what i like about this movie is the same reason i like WandaVision so much, that extremely powerful magic comes from a place of pain, and the way she falls for her own spell, like she says "beloved by all who meet her" and she never thought that would include her.
When this movie 1st came out I was like she is the best Disney villain of all time then you also realise that like it was kind of like a regular story but I get had a lot more depths to it like you're more showed why the dark varied in what she did then just is who like she was evil
14:32 Maleficent said, "This curse will last until the end of time. No power on Earth can change it."
5:54 : The reason she did not wake up is because Stefan's drink had been laced with sedative.
I love this movie its so well done. I'm glad you made a video on it :D
So am I! :D

HELP THE NOISE THAT CAME OUT OF YOU AT THAT SHOT OF MALEFICIENT FLYING OUT OF THE WINDOW
Saw this one in theaters with my best friend when it came out. Hands down, the best of the live action Disney movies in my opinion. It’s such a good comfort movie
10:19
Maleficent doesn't kill her because she understands that the sins of the father are not the sins of the son,or in this case of the daughter. she does love the Aurora but she hates her father and she wants the father to suffer, but she's not going to kill the girl before she turns 16.
She cares about the baby because she is a good person. it showing that she is still the good person she was before Stefan broke her heart
"This movie was magnificent" is just the best description of this movie
Despite the messy story line, I still love it because it’s a reimagining of one of my ultimate favorite childhood movies “Sleeping Beauty”. If you plan to check out the original animated movie, you’re doing the Lord’s work 😂 the art, the animation and the music 🤌🏼 unlimited chef’s kisses lmao
Thank you so much for reacting to this amazing film, made my whole day! If you like seeing te 'villain' as the main character, I also think you'd love Cruella, though it's quite different from this film, it's a very good one as well😊

6:54 I *just* realised that the actor of Diaval also plays Mr Darcy in Pride & Prejudice & Zombies lol.
I'd love to see a reaction to that film up on the channel as well sometime.
Literally the last live action movie that actually made something decent and good.
"Loved by all who meet her" that's why
Oh man, your reactions are always so entertaining!! 😂😂 But I would definitely have to agree with Maleficent being the favorite villain.
Ahh thank you J0Y!
@@PyroDrew I guess she thought death was too good for him, that he needed to suffer and the best way to do it was taking the thing he loves the most.
Welchy: Is this something like Sleeping Beauty

i was thinking about rewatching it recently so im glad you uploaded this !! now we can rewatch it together
"We do not claim this bitch" 😂😂
I'm so glad you loved this movie! Def underrated (and I don't know why it's it's the ONLY live action remake that was good besides Cinderella)
I agree
They actually made a follow up movie to this which actually expands more on Maleficent
This is bay far one of my favorite live action movies Disney has made. Would love to see you react to the second maleficent movie. Love the reaction and your videos! You do such a great job.
You know I remember watching this and absolutely loving it because they break the villain and love stereotypes. I must have had media amnesia because I haven’t watched it since it came out, but this video has made me remember why I fucking stanned this film😂😂
1:22 THAT IS professor Umbridge😂
21:32 you okay there bud? Sounded like something we weren't supposed to see
It’s Maleficent’s fault she started to care about Aurora she put a spell on her that anyone who meets her will love her. 😂
I really love this film! So many great messages, and I adore Diaval and Malificent
THIS IS THE BEST SLEEPING BEAUTY STORY EVER!!! 😭😱💖
I really love watching your Disney videos takes me back to my childhood and love that you've done off-shoot ones like treasure planet and enjoyed them it's quite a bit older and a bit spooky but I would truly love to see you watch The Black Cauldron it's so amazing and different for the usual thank you for what you do man! ^^
I am really glad to see you enjoyed it. It is my favorite Disney live action adaptations next to 101D. Yeah, I can never really figure why many didn't like it, probably they didn't find Maleficent to be as mean or villainous as she originally was in SB. There is a sequel to this one.
I love how Welchy is just raging at the fact that the stefan and his kingdom has a fake scottish accent
Maleficent was always my favourite villain.
I was so scared of what a live-action/origin story might be...
But I was pleasantly surprised.
Maleficent is still my favourite villain.
Please do the second one too!!It's so good
regarding her being unable to take back her curse, hatred and jealously is a very strong feeling which i think then translated into the intensity of her powers during the curse, the feeling of betrayal and jealously can be quite powerful
Love the video
:D
Another great movie and entertaining reaction.

I love it when he nuts when she got her wings back lmao.
The reason she still got so invested in aroura is because she is subject to her own curse. Not only is she cursed to die. But she also cursed her to be beloved by everyone who meet her. Including well. Maleficent. As she has met the child-
from a quick scroll in the comments no ones mentioned the second one, i would recommend it for a continuation of this one and even more backstory
