      I think you’re wrong. I think the Apple sub deal could work, because it’s different than the pac 12 nw. That was only available on a small region of cable providers, as you said. Apple is available worldwide. If 3-4 million fans, which is a tiny amount of fans, pay, @12.99/mth 36 to 48 million a month, or 467 to 596 million a year. That’s more than enough, and it could be more if it’s 5 mil or more fans. It could actually be a model that other conf’s follow. So you’re actually proving the point by talking about distribution. Bottom line, it could work, if it’s distributed and fans want it. If the B1G doesn’t invite UW and UO, they’ll try it. They should invite SDS, Fresno, SMU and push the subs.

    I saw this awesome idea earlier on a CFB forum:
    When the Big Ten adds more PAC schools, they can separate the conference into two divisions: the PAC and the BIG. Then, at the end of the season, they could have the winner of each division play each other. Perhaps this game could take place on New Year's day in California, maybe even have a parade and everything. They could call it "The Rose Bowl" or something like that. Could be fun.

    As an Oregon fan for over four decades, I understand why the Ducks & Huskies did this. Many will say “money” which isn’t totally correct. I believe the real answer is:
    Relevancy.
    It’s easier to recruit, they both now get stability that Larry Scott destroyed with his arrogance as commissioner of the Pac 12 and honestly, I feel awful for Oregon state, and Washington State. Cal and Stanford will be okay.
    OSU & WSU didn’t deserve this.
    It’s ashamed that the mismanagement of the broadcast rates for the Pac 12, which stumbled so horribly. When Larry Scott refused to let Oklahoma and Texas in, and turned down a terrestrial TV/ESPN contract opportunity, he turned it down for what he thought would be. “greener pastures.”
    “Greener Pastures” became the cemetery.
    It’s a hard day for many Oregon and Washington fans to leave OSU & WSU to “fend for themselves to survive.” I hope Autzen gives a STANDING OVATION to the Beavers at the end of the last “Civil War” game.
    I’m calling the game that because it’s fitting after over a century of competing against each other in conference.

      100%. Big Ten was just waiting in an alliance with the PAC-12 and ACC to stay safe + get closer to the teams in case the SEC started making some moves, which they ended up doing, which is why the Big Ten is doing what they are doing.

    • @Tyler_Kent

      It's not that simple. The Pac's attempted raid on the B12 is what prompted the B12 to give Texas the LHN. This resulted in a middle finger from A&M, Mizzou, Neb, and CU.
      Also, at the same time, Texas' performance went into the toilet.
      Bama hiring Nick Saban swung the pendulum hugely from Texas/OU and USC. The SEC on-field quality surged as recruits saw the SEC as a fast lane to the NFL. Big TV $ followed.
      All the while the Pac12 made numerous bad decisions. Many of those were rooted in hubris and tone deafness.
      But if you wanna blame one group, by all means ...

    • @jimedick9496

      I agree to a point. The B1G never went after the LA schools. It was USC who approached the B1G years ago. The announcement just happened to be shortly after the news about Tex and Ok switching conferences.
      The B1G worked the LA schools into their media rights package from the very beginning, hence the reason why they received full revenue. Obviously sitting in the 2nd largest media market boosted their value, as well as their name brand.

    Here’s what I hope ultimately happens. With the PAC falling apart and the ACC seemingly vulnerable, I’d like the BIG 10 to go all in- 24 teams. Here’s my wish list. May not happen but I’d love it if they did:
    Big 10- 6 PODS 24 team
    South
    North Carolina, Clemson, Florida St., Miami
    East:
    Virginia, Maryland, Penn St, Rutgers
    Central:
    Ohio St, Michigan, Michigan St., Indiana
    Midwest:
    Notre Dame, Purdue, Northwestern, Illinois
    North:
    Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska
    West:
    USC, UCLA, Oregon, Washington
    Play everyone in your pod each year and combine with 2 other pods to form a division which rotates yearly, so you eventually play each pod. Play 3 teams from the each pod for a total of 9 games. Each division has a winner face off for a championship game.
    Joe’s version is probably more realistic but this is my dream scenario.

      Don’t entertain any idea that ND would be an afterthought to any conference plan. They have already rejected the big integer numerous times. The ACC deal they currently have is really sustainable. It satisfies their need, a conference that provides a home for their Olympic sports teams. Even hard to figure the advantage of leaving, for teams like Clemson, Miami, or Florida State, who have stability in a smaller pond where they are the big fish and decent revenues and prestige as a national recruiting presence all the result of their association with Notre Dame. Even if teams do leave, whatever remains will still provide ND with conference association where they need it. IDK about the ACC not splitting, I can see a scenario where the Big 12/Big 10/SEC agree to split up 6 teams in order to get the votes to tear up that rights deal. The teams would be Duke/UNC/USC (lite)/FSU/Miami/Clemson that's half the conference. IF that happens then ND is without a conference and would be a bonus for the big 10 as they'd move their sports outside of football or forced to move all sports if the conf decided to play hardball since they also would have USC as a card to play. This all could get very interesting and ugly real quick right before kickoff in 29 days.

    I said this when USC and UCLA jumped to the Big 10. The Big Ten needed to add 4 more schools out west (Oregon, Washington, Stanford (for the academic side of the Big 10) and Arizona or Colorado). Now with potentially Arizona and Colorado out, they should add two more out West.
    And once schools can get out of the ACC they should look to add Duke, North Carolina, Clemson, FSU or Miami. They would cover a majority of the USA and have some of the biggest markets for football and basketball.
    So the divisions would look like:
    West:
    USC
    UCLA
    OREGON
    WASHINGTON
    STANFORD
    ONE MORE
    MIDWEST:
    MINNESOTA
    WISCONSIN

    NEBRASKA
    NORTHWESTERN
    CENTRAL:
    MICHIGAN ST
    MICHIGAN
    PURDUE
    OHIO ST
    INDIANA
    PENN ST
    EAST:
    RUTGERS

    I'm going to push back on the premise that this is some kind of Titanic situation where universities are going to go under if they don't move conferences. Stanford, Cal, Oregon, Arizona etc universities are not in danger of bankruptcy. Arizona has $55m just in cash and $1.4B in revenue. Stanford could quit football entirely and the school will be here in 100 years. If they got $20m less for their broadcast rights, they wouldn't like it, but they would be nowhere near financial insolvency. The problem is how do you explain paying your assistant coaches $1m and flying them by private jets to see recruits if your athletic department isn't breaking even? There are players that don't understand why the football team needs a private jet to win one more game a year, assuming that other teams don't have their own private plane, when you can spend that money on cancer research. For the sake of argument, if you could get another $50m for your rights, what would you spend it on? You coaches would want a raise. Your administrators would want a raise. Your players would see that money coming in and want a part of that. Your boosters would want better private boxes. It's called inflation. More money comes into the system and you end up paying more for the same thing and you get nowhere.

    • @coog9
      @coog9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Athletic $ is separate from the school admin $, or you wouldn't need boosters and big media deals.

    • @needmorecowbell6895
      @needmorecowbell6895 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@coog9 Not really. Students all over the country pay $hundreds in student fees to support their athletic department. Some schools move athletic scholarship costs to other funds to make the athletic department look good. Some do the opposite. You need ticket money and media deals so that you can justify paying your OC a million dollars. Pretty hard to justify that if the athletic department is in the red. If you have to move money from other university accounts to cover a deficit in the athletic accounts, then things get ugly. You get pushback for raising fees, tuition, or telling your cancer researcher she doesn't get a raise this year. And you certainly don't want to tell the legislature that the AD isn't exercising fiscal control.

    • @johnlee7085
      @johnlee7085 ปีที่แล้ว

      @cowbells - You can make all the rationalizations you want, athletics success has a direct effect on the number of students and the quality of students.
      Also, the students that pay fees to the athletic department are likely at the underfunded schools. The big schools are subsidizing other programs because of the football and to some extent basketball revenue.

    I've been saying all along why would ESPN pay more for the same teams that are in the ACC to go to the SEC or BIG? If someone would let me in on that I am all ears? ESPN is bleeding money like a stuck hog, Disney is losing money, and they are looking to shed entities to reduce costs. ESPN has announced that they are looking for 'strategic partners" i.e.. bail our rear ends out. Ain't gonna happen in the near future. Will the ACC survive long term? It may if revenues increase. ESPN's business model is shedding subscriptions to streaming services and they are in a world of hurt. It's like the fans and schools of the ACC teams wanting to leave the ACC have no business acumen. Ain't but so much money out there unless you are the government. They just print more.

    • @scratchpenny
      @scratchpenny ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, but this is about these conferences having leverage with all the most marketable teams. So, if the B1G or SEC can poach all the teams that really matter for media fan engagement, then they can get more money with their deals. That's what happened with the B1G when they added UCLA and USC. They increased their values because now they have a bigger fan base and control the LA market. So what happens is the lesser schools lose when they are no longer affiliated with the big-name schools. The money has shifted. That's what is happening to the PAC12 right now.

    • @DLTJR1959
      @DLTJR1959 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@scratchpenny ESPN pays the SEC in addition to the ACC. ESPN would have to agree for Clemson or whomever from the ACC to leave to go to the SEC. The current GOR makes that more difficult. ESPN would have to pay more money for those same teams that were in the ACC to go wherever. If that is in ESPN's best interest they would agree to it if they could discount the remaining teams in the ACC. You talk about leverage. I'm talking about who's paying the bill for that leverage.

Then, there's the type of " change" that one could do with, or without as it only serves as a form of hobby, outlet, or entertainment. With the constant change in college athletics such as N.I.L., the Portal,& now...MASSIVE realignment, I've come to a point of the resignation of my emotional investment in sports( in general) . Next highest is Texas Tech and Bayolr at 36th and 37th. Utah would most likely be a top program in the Big12 upon entry. There's no guarantee but most likely they would find success.
      I didn't count Texas and Oklahoma as they'll be in the SEC in 2024. Though they do rank higher than Utah in recruiting.

    Same thing happening in the MW with Boise st getting a larger share of the revenue, why it’s not like they winning the conference every year .

      Ok well two things....
      1. BSU still has the most MWC titles of any team currently in the MWC.
      2. Boise State gets a larger share of revenue..... by $2 million, or at least they used to until 2019 when the MWC in the middle of their TV contract tried to steal it away from them (which is why BSU has been suing the MWC for 4 years now).
      And a few more things....
      3. BSU is trying to grow the program, but the MWC is steadfast in remaining a local brand, which limits their ability to grow, which is also why they have been trying to get out of the conference really ever since they joined.
      4. It should also be noted that the only reason BSU got the revenue in the first place wasnt even because they dominated the MWC, but because they were going to join the Big East in 2012, but the MWC agreed to give them the larger share.

      @@luismoreno564 You do realize 4 other teams in the MWC have some pretty alarming problems with the MWC?
      Including Fresno State, SDSU, San Jose State and Air Force......
