Usually probation is the time you have to prove your right for the job. Not making any mistakes, showing up on time, etc. after the probation period you get more leeway and have to mess up a few times to get warnings and write ups. Probation is the time they feel you and see how right you are for the job. Getting fired for no reason is illegal hence probation period and written warnings and write ups to document infractions.
All Nick was supposed to do was watch & wait for the squad to respond everyone knows you do not break up any fights with inmates because that could be a set up
I work for one of the three agencies brought up in this video. Keep fighting this, Nick! Dont let them bully you into backing down. I find it interesting that their grounds for termination was that you "failed probation." I'm not sure how they think you getting injured while performing your assigned duties counts as failing. It’s in the Bronx. All crimes/incidents go through the Bronx courts because it’s part of Bronx County. (NYPD hates it because it adds to crime statistics in the Bronx - really should have their index on crime statistics). The odd thing is, is that the only way on to the island is through Queens.
@@antonvonmanheim4653 you can go from all the borough detention centers, VCBC, "the boat" which is basically a boat on the opposite side of Rikers island, on the Bronx side

Former NYS Corrections officer here... It was terrible and I don't recommend it to anyone. I went in at 22 years old (43 now) and there was a lot of people who were in their 40's that went to the academy. A officer I worked with in the state max was a former Rikers island officer 15 years. He was one of the toughest SOB I knew and nobody including inmates would fuck with him. He said he burned some brain cells working there and glad he came over to the state. There is so much that goes on in these prisons that the public will never know.. I get asked all the time and the shit I've seen and been through will blow your mind. People can't believe it but it's true. Seen a lot crap happen to a lot of officers trying to to do their job.. at end of the day.. you can't anymore.. just a free for all. It's not like it was back in the day say the 80's, 90's per the guys I have worked with. I understand what he is saying and it hope it works out.
With all respect to Mr. Goichai, this is a textbook case of why you should save for retirement in an IRA etc and not take a job for a pension. Pensions provide retirement income but are not wealth that you can control on your own. It’s best to be self reliant. Wishing him the best in resolving his case.
Problem though is many people will not voluntarily do that and contribute. Whether not up to speed, lazy, undisciplined, whatever, many people don’t take the initiative or lack the discipline to save and invest out of their own paychecks on a consistent basis. Now, if the IRA or 401(k) was mandatory unless opt out then more would.
He was only there 2 years talking about a rapport with inmates, not good. It takes years to develop a rapport. They were probably working him the long game. That said sounds like management screwed him over. He will probably win and get his job back, but most likely be transferred.
I hope he’s not going to get in trouble for speaking out while this is being litigated? I know he’s passionate about his cause but sometimes the court and work comp board don’t like this. I think the aclu should get involved as well. What about his union? I would not want to go back to working in this environment, his coworkers must be pissed he’s speaking out. If they didn’t have his back while the fight was going on how will he feel safe going forward.
I understood that a govt job that has a Union must be the first entity to fight for their members jobs. It's only after after all the Union redress have failed that one can hire an Attorney, but maybe it's different at a City job level.
I know this would be difficult but I would really really like to see an interview with someone who worked at ADX Florence. Always been fascinated with that place.
The fact that these inmates helped this man instead of his peers and superior officers speaks volumes. I hope this man wins his fight against the Department of Corrections. They allowed this CO to break up a fight between 2 men all by himself and just watched as if they were viewing a movie. I hope he can get the last laugh. Rikers is no joke. I've had a couple of relatives locked up as well as neighbors. I hated when i made a visit.
This whole world is corrupted. Corrections in any state are horrible. I personally know about 5 people who finished their retirement from Rikers Island and had miserable time. Some have lifelong mental and physical issues. I hope this correction officer gets what he's entitled to? God bless us all in this difficult world. 🙏
Exactly. Also if somebody gets a job as a co squabbles should be expected that's like gettin a job as a boxer & never expecting to get punched or football player & not expecting to get tackled.......
I don’t think he’s going to get reinstated the way he wants, I don’t know why he didn’t get a full medical pension for his injuries. It’s clear he can’t go back to work there due to his injuries. That rule about the OC spray is ridiculous so if you’re getting assaulted you have to follow some protocol in case the inmate is deaf? The problem is too many police officers get a medical pension that should not and he should get it. In NJ all corrections officers are considered police officers so there seems to be a union problem here not getting these officers covered. He has my respect.
Those two officers who just watched the fight and did nothing to help Nick should be in jail. The state has an obligation to protect all inmates while in their custody and also to protect the correctional officers while they are working.
The same happens in Los Angeles County. If an employee gets hurt on the job eventually the county forces people to demote to clerk/ laundry worker or force to retire. Yes, the government will drag the lawsuits so the person gives up. The employee lose their savings, their home….. everything. Wishing you the best!

I’ve been through something similar and the courts will do some very slick shit and before you know it your case is wrapping up and you aren’t getting a penny.
I agree. Why didn’t he wait till after?? He will get nothing. I agree with you.
@@KellyM-gv3bo it's a litigation were the video was recorded it's gonna speak fornit self. And I'm sure his attorney told him a few things not to mention
I'm assuming his attorney had to review and approve the edit before it was uploaded
None of the points he made are a secret to the opposing side. His coming forward adds to the pressure to settle the suit for $$$ rather than go on trial. That's the tactic.
He could actually go after those officers who didn’t intervene
NYC Civil Service - City Owned, Family Run! This guy gets his job back, he gonna end up getting jerked off his whole career, they’ll NEVER let him settle in. Look at the mayor’s BS that they sweeping under the carpet!
Worked for and retired from the Federal bureau of prisons for 20 years. The stories I could tell!
Do itttttttt !!! The people want to know,!!!!
Yes, PLEASE!!
I’m in corrections myself… I turned 35 this year and I’m thinking about moving from NYC to Jersey to join the BOP… would you recommend the Feds?
@@Nyjetsfan1289 absolutely. From what I understand the pays a lot better, I'm sure the benefits are a lot better, and you can retire after 20 years. But, you can only work till you're 57 cuz they don't want old folks running the prisons. I retired 10 years ago at the ripe age of 53, and I am now living my best life. I don't think federal institutions are as violent as state institutions are either.
Pray do tell. Moron!

@@davidperez5089 What is your definition of a normal person?
You can be pretty normal but still do crimes.
Would you call a person drinking and driving normal?
Would you say people who steal money are relatively normal?
Normal to me in this situation is the opposite of violence and totally mental craziness.
99,9 of the most criminal people in the world you would never know what they'd done if you just spoke to them outside prison.
They're normal.
Bundy was normal.
Gacey was normal.
Kemper, Watts, Wallov, I could go on but you get my point.
HA, Bandidos and so on are the nicest guys to talk to ever. They're helpful, charming, nice, normal.
We don't see these people when they're not normal so I really don't understand the use of the word normal.
Unfortunately, Nick has a lot to learn about the system. He is on probation at NYC Corrections for 22 years. He is fighting City Hall. At most he is entitled to a 3/4 tax free disability pension for 1 years worth of service. This would not be much money per year. Good luck and I think you are better off moving on in your life.
22 years?
Yes. While probation is technically 2 years, I have been told that COs feel like they are always on probation until retired. FYI.
Completely wrong lol
@@greese6916fortunately feelings don’t hold any weight.
CO's on Rikers are making 6 figures on workers comp cases , some co's have 7 years on the job and have 6 comp cases and made 345,000 in total . the NYPD and FDNY were stopped from filing workers comp cases over 10 years ago and have to sue the City of New York to even receive if lucky a settlement . Big money in NYCD
I love the correctional officer stories please keep ‘em coming 🙌🙌
Get your money, Nick!
Stand up guy! God bless you! 🙏
Nick.. I’m Albanian. I was born in Detroit and we moved to New Jersey when I was 5..Loved listening to your story.
For all he's gone through, Nick looks great for his age. I wouldn't put him beyond mid 30s!
the Balkan genetic pool is very potent, males look rather massive and are pretty healthy. with a little care for oneself and a lack of self-abusive behaviors (overeating, smoking, heavy drinking, substance abuse), and regular exercise, your typical balkan male would look like a pro athlete from his 20s all the way up to his 50s.
Fascinating interview! I wish him the very best. Greetings from NYC. Cheers!
STAY WITH THIS GUY!! many follow-ups needed.
I was raised on the streets and I BELIEVE this man,to the word!!!
You deserve better. I hope you get every penny!
Three years with corrections was enough for me. Inmates never bothered me. Fellow staff slept with inmates, did drugs with them, and were rats and snitches. Cops hated our guts because so many of us have been arrested.
Wow - impressive! Nick is a genuinely good man.
I’d love to see a follow-up on this story, Mark!
Thank you for sharing this with us, Nick 🧚
Nick and I started the academy together. Real solid guy. His story hit home for me because I too have been a victim in several situations and it fell on deaths ears. That department is disgusting and I really hope Nick gets everything he’s asking for SOON! Sad how the inmates have more rights and are far more protected than the officers who keep the operation flowing. By far the worst thankless job/career to have.
I love this video and Nick seems like a genuine man who wants treats people with compassion. Love love love
Nick- here in #solidarity Best of luck!!! Keep Mark updated.
I really enjoyed your story hopefully I'll find more of your stuff, I hope you win your case and keep fighting the good fight ❤thank you for your service
Love this interview! Hanging on every word!
From my understanding if you are in probation at your job you can get let go for any reason. Hope this guy wins
The system should appreciate this man even considering going back to work there..❤
Speaks to his character. 🎉❤
All Nick was supposed to do was watch & wait for the squad to respond everyone knows you do not break up any fights with inmates because that could be a set up
I think it was a set up as the crooks were grooming him
Nick, I hope you win. Please keep us updated.
That's how they do worker's comp at my job, too. They'll do anything to not pay. Ridiculous.
I support you and hope the best for you!!
I work for one of the three agencies brought up in this video. Keep fighting this, Nick! Dont let them bully you into backing down. I find it interesting that their grounds for termination was that you "failed probation." I'm not sure how they think you getting injured while performing your assigned duties counts as failing. I'm sure your attorneys have already requested all of your employee evaluations- which I'm sure will help with your case. Good luck!
This guy makes me proud to be a New Yorker! Big up Nick 👍 You got this man!
I'm surprised you found an attorney that was willing to take a case against the city. I'm glad you did and I wish you well. I'd love to see a follow-up on this situation.
This guy was extremely interesting! He's some swagger, for sure😎
I find interviews like this far more interesting than the pimps, addicts, etc.
The city of New York treats its employees like absolute trash. The things they do to teachers is INSANE. I totally understand where this guy is coming from.
A solid understatement on soft underbelly
RIKERS IS NOT IN THE BRONX Mark, It is located in East Elmhurst, Which is right outside of Queens
It's a friggin' island near La Guardia airport, you dope!
Yes. But technically they consider it part of the Bronx. The bridge to Rikers , the entrance is on HazenSt. In East Elmhurst however the island itself is part of Bronx for whatever reason. Its right near LaGuardia Airport @busterbiloxi3833
@@antonvonmanheim4653wrong. All jail cases go to Bronx court. Not every single criminal case. The boat is in bx and rikers is in elmhurst queens.

I’m very anxious for the update on this one!
Nick you are one tenacious & intelligent man. I wish more people had your work ethic. You deserve & will get justice.✨️🙏🏾✨️
Nick. I was forced to retire as a correction officer from Nassau County ny. It was the greatest job. I loved my job. When I got hurt. I had to make a decision get fixed or retire because I was unable to do the job anymore. I don’t know who your attorney is but, he sounds like my attorney. Good luck. I hope you go out 3/4 and get a great settlement.
How did I know his captain was a woman?! She did not want to get hurt so she stood there and watched a fellow officer risk his life.
Very common anytime women are in such positions.
Are the two of you twats?
Maybe this happens with females in The US, which I highly doubt, but it for sure would never happen in the part of the world I live in!
I think having female counselors at men's prisons is a good thing. They have a different energy and some men are easier to get through to if you're a woman. As far as officers no way.
The two people who watched sat back and watched the two crazies fighting were men..
Nice man, I hope and pray he wins over the city.
Real tough guys don’t always look it, and are very soft spoken.
Be careful when you size up strangers.
You never know their life story or what type of training they’ve had👍🏾
Keep us posted please on nicks journey.
I love my prison genre channels. This is weird. But I joined them to hear the violence and bs that goes on.
Typically you have a 401k type as well as a pension in civil service.
Good job Nick. Fight for yourself. I hope others can find your strength.
I hope he wins this case 🙏🏼
Nick please keep us updated.
He's already contradicted his story right here on camera

I understood that a govt job that has a Union must be the first entity to fight for their members jobs. It's only after after all the Union redress have failed that one can hire an Attorney, but maybe it's different at a City job level.
Seems like this story is missing something
I know this would be difficult but I would really really like to see an interview with someone who worked at ADX Florence. Always been fascinated with that place.

Excellent interview! Hoping you win BIG 🏆
If he wins they will make his life miserable. He is a good man keep your chin up.
This guy is telling his story on SWU to draw awareness to his case and speed up his payday !!
RIKERS ISLAND IS ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING!!!! IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE SHUT DOWN BY NOW. WTF IS GOING ON.
The entrance to Rikers was at the end of my street & I lived in Queens!!!
I feel sorry for you. 300 aircraft landing and taking off in your front yard.
You could tell he has a good heart. He was around monsters
I agree with you. We live in a very corrupt system and it’s getting worse.
In America, fire some one for no reason? 30:15 in fairness, the reason may be financial related. People get laid off all the time due to downsizing 💡
Exactly. Also if somebody gets a job as a co squabbles should be expected that's like gettin a job as a boxer & never expecting to get punched or football player & not expecting to get tackled.......
Yes, most states are work at will states, meaning they can fire you for no reason
Keep on fighting dude! You seem like a great guy
Good evening everyone from Melbourne Australia🦘
Good morning from here, the midwest of the USA.
I worked for federal prisons 25 years. Almost impossible to get fired.
Federal is the key word, city totally different.
I'm pretty sure that's what he's saying
@@styner3I'm pretty sure that's what he's saying in a roundabout way

The same happens in Los Angeles County. If an employee gets hurt on the job eventually the county forces people to demote to clerk/ laundry worker or force to retire.
Yes, the government will drag the lawsuits so the person gives up. The employee lose their savings, their home….. everything.

My boyfriends sister is a Sergeant at a local women's prison. She's been there 20 years & got hurt on the job resulting in multiple surgeries.
