This has to be one of the best stories I’ve heard in this channel!! As a former lifer who did 25 straight, I can definitely identify with his story of failure and redemption. Robert is an inspiration for others and an example of the sufficiency of Gods Grace in action!! Keep your head up Robert and “GO THE DISTANCE….” Peace

This guy should be a consultant for movies on gang life. He’s an amazing storyteller. He’s so naturally smart, had he not sold his young soul to “working” for mobsters, I am sure he would have excelled in whatever profession or trade he could have chosen. In spite of his mistakes, it’s obvious he’s a man of integrity. I’m glad he stopped devoting his energy to a treacherous conglomerate like the cartels.

Robert, you will probably never see this. But my father gave 40 years of his life to the CDCR, and was tired of it and ended it on his own in Pelican Bay earlier this year. You may have known him, seems like you guys may have been affiliated with the same group. But watching this video gutted me, I cried from beginning to end. Because like you, my dad didn’t really didn’t have many options from birth. His only child, the burden of his choices fell on me hard, from my birth until his death, it’s been a struggle. I hope you know, your testimony. God literally pulled you from the pits of hell aka CDCR! Your mindset, the way you articulated your experiences. I prayed my whole life my dad could have had the change you had, unfortunately, his lifestyle was always most important. You keep on telling your story, you never know who is listening maybe a young boy in SoCal right now that’s gonna make the same choices! Thank you for sharing this!

Love you unc. Proud of how far you’ve come. I remember staying at your house a year and a half ago and you let me read your testimony from prison from when you were incarcerated. You’ve accomplished more in a few years than most do in a lifetime. My mom always spoke highly of you growing up and knew the struggles you battled at a very young age that no child should go through. Keep up the good work and fuck what all these negative people have to say. Most wouldn’t survive or be able to endure the things you have since you were a young child.

Your truth is an example of just how toxic entertainment media and news media is because contrary to these stupid and manipulative sayings that are a constant in media from wholly corrupt people, *sometimes the solution really is running away from your problems!*
You can separate yourself with distance, leave it all behind and you immediately start healing.
*We live in a world full of toxic symbology and it's most extreme presence is entertainment media and celebrities who are nothing more than complete and total strangers that in some capacity are being paid to say things.*
The most ever present thing they say are these absurd rules of old sayings an analogies literally none of them live by while manipulating us since childhood to believe if we do, it's a path to greatness; *it's definitely not!*

Money isn't everything; but neither is love.

It made me feel at ease when he says that he regrets some of his past actions, but acknowledges that while he is explaining some of the situations from the past that he is re-living those emotions and that emotions dont know time like that.. Because certain people in some videos seem like they aren't aware that they are sitting smiling talking about hurting another human being or something like that. But he is aware, we're all human and make mistakes, I try not to judge anybody, but it's hard to watch a video with someone talking about doing bad stuff and they show no remorse what so ever. This man’s story is one hell of a ride. Makes me think of my Uncle who just got out of prison a few years ago. He was in prison for 43 years. He was apart of the Nuestra Familia. I believe his ranking was either a captain or General. About half way through, The Feds offered him a deal for him to get out if he complied. Truly, my uncle wanted to always get out and be with the family. I believe it took around 15 years for him to finally get out. It almost sounds impossible due to him having to serve 2 life sentences. He went to a handful of top penitentiaries. He would write out orders at pelican bay to send out to the gangs in the streets. I believe they used code. I remember when he finally was granted freedom, the FBI agents told my family and I to not call him by his real name for a while.
But anyways Just like this man, nothing but humbleness and humility. Keeps his cool, found Jesus, is now married and owns a home. The stories he would tell me were pretty gnarly. Just like Robert, he does not take pride in the things he has done. I love my uncle and give him nothing but respect. He’s a kind hearted man. He’s a changed man. My whole family embraced him right away when he got out.

I think... some of us, had to... explore, our violent tendencies... you know how to truly care for people, when you've truly hurt someone. And only if there was remorse. Former gang members have the capacity for this rare transformation... me being one of them that has joined the ranks of normie life and mortgages and dog food and credit ratings and so on. I DID tire of the lifestyle... as most men will. It's only in our youth that we fall prey to this warriors mentality that's almost instinctual to shed blood in battle and be praised for it...

I am a military spouse who sees it different, but still very similar. Did our vets know the Vietnam man as a regular man? No, My brother was all of Viet Cong as a threat and sniped them. U.S have a lot of killers, but you will never see it like that. Military is proud and holds values of Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage. You think they really enjoyed it? Educate yourself on what PTSD is. This man on this video was in a "street basic training" and already predisposed to this life. What great masculine example except the higher ups in prison? I have brothers from El Monte, Ca and know who Hays gang is, the other is Flores in South El Monte he were my mom side were raised. I went to school there in Jr. high. The issue is in California is that all the men who have children end up in prisons, and the children have no fathers to correct them properly. Sometimes the dad being in prison makes it difficult for the mother and they get hooked on drugs, and the children get raised by the system. It's a bigger problem than you see in this story.

This was a damn good story. I never been to prison before but his drug addiction mirrored my own. I was put on at the age of 12 with IV heroin use. I struggled for 25 long years before I was able to finally put it down. I battled a hep c bout which damn near killed me. I lost my family due to my addiction, found my mom dead, lost my children, got divorced twice, all while still hopelessly addicted to heroin. I finally wised up, found a woman who truly loved me enough to invest her time in me and she showed me a life without drugs. I’ve been clean four years, I have my health now, my body fought off the hep c somehow, I got custody of my oldest son, and now currently in a custody battle for my youngest son (his mother lost him to the state because she relapsed and went to rehab). This story truly rang deep in my heart and I know I’m not alone in this life, and that someone else went thru similar issues (solely drug related, minus the prison term) and it shows me that we can recover and do great things. When he said he did in five years what takes some lifetimes to do, I fucking felt that because that’s what I did too. Thank you Mr Hernandez, for sharing your story, and thank you Mark for giving this man a platform to voice this message. As powerful as this is it could potentially save someone. I’d love to tell my story one day and would pray for someone to give me the platform to do so once I was ready.

Crazy.. so I had an encounter with Diablo" at the anchor inn motel in Norwalk off of imperial highway and Firestone. I was 16 and visiting a friend who lived there.. her family were the managers. One night, we were by the pool, and there was a payphone on the wall.. At the end of the pathway, a dead end ..nowhere to go. I'm talking on the phone, and he comes up and tries to phone check me. I'm 49 now and was 16 then. He's a few years older than me. I'never seen him before, and I'm from Norwalk.. i grew up in the circle on Madris Ave and Cheshire went to dolland Elementary and John Glenn high-school in the 80s. He wanted me to get off the phone and started telling me ,and the girl I was with ,who he was and where he was from and that I needed to let him have the phone because of it. He was a lot thinner .strung out, no doubt, younger. The girl I was with jumped up got in-between us
.she got in his face and told him that what he was doing wasn't called for..that one of us are gangbangers and not to be bringing that to where she lived
He looked at her and smiled..sure it helped that she was beautiful but I think he respected that she wasn't intimidated an backed off. I ended my call, hung up the phone, and just watched in amazement. Now I know his name..... Robert

I don't necessarily think u are proud about them memories because it's disgusting the suffering you brought to so many innocent people. Even when we find our opps who may deserve the physical attacks and possible loss of life, their families and loved ones suffer the most and in many circumstances they are innocent. many times we are not in control of what comes naturally including enjoying or feeling the adrenaline and excitement rushing through your veins. So not hate homie, i think its clear u changed ur lifestyle, I just think its crazy how deep we can fall into our memories and the places it brings us, memories have the ability to send us back and put us into the shoes of the people we used to be.

A lot of my fellow Haitians, brothers and sisters, are looking for a way out of the country and i am one of them ‘coz i got kids and i am not seeing that little light at the end of the tunnel BUT listening to you today brought tears to my eyes and hope to my soul.
I’m 44 years old brother and i feel like life is slipping through my fingers but it’s just a feeling, i know God is right there and everywhere and i will always, as my father thought me, to never quit no matter what might happen.
Thank you M. Hernandez for opening your heart and soul to the world so a brother could benefit from that acquired wisdom through sweat, blood and tears.
It shaked my entire being when you mentioned the movie: “ le Conte de Monte Cristo“ and that specific moment from “ 8 Mile “ too.
The way you talked, your flow, your voice, the prison stories all that is a blessing to me.
God bless you M. Hernandez ! God bless you Marc from Port-au-Prince, Haiti ! 🙏🏽

I am from California and know a lot of how it is there. I left California because growing up all I saw were similarities. In high school, I felt so institutionalized. The format goes, Mexicans hand in one area, black on the other, then white skin-heads in the other. We were already predisposed to what looked the same as a prison yard. These groups did not get along, and whenever there was a fight, all 3 races were separated into class rooms for a few hours as student were questioned. When I left that public high school in 1992, then already had the approval and plan to put in the metal detectors. I married, became a military wife, and got the heck out of California. How are men in Cali with a family supposed to support their families with no stable good jobs that allow a man to provide adequately for his family with a acceptable salary and good benefits and hours? If that is not happening, the result to drug dealing, then the life of gangs comes in and prison. No good example, jobs, cost of living, a predisposed environment, so many children in foster care. I relocated with the military and only go to Cali to visit family every 6-10 years.

Wow!!! This is by far one of the most powerful stories I've seen on Soft White Underbelly. I've grown up with family who were and still are institutionalized, my relationships are primarily with institutionalized men. This story makes me think about prison reform.... Gives me hope....

Thank you, Robert, for sharing your story. I hope you will return to share more. When you shared how the Governor himself signed off on you at the parole board, saying that he doesn't normally do that, I felt so proud and humbled for you. I had the biggest smile hearing that. God is good! All the time!

This is a fantastic interview through my teenage years and into adulthood I was wrapped up in a life of drug addiction and committing crime to support a drug habit.which ultimately sent me to prison three different times with numerous violations and I can’t even count how many times I’ve been in county jails what I can tell you is that I ran into a lot of guys like him when I was inside most of them never got out. This is an extremely inspiring story. I for one have nothing but respect for an admiration for this man and the positive changes that he’s made for himself in his life. This is an absolute banger of an interview.👍🙏💯💯💯💯
