- Police arrested about 300 protesters during campus raids at Columbia University and The City University of New York (CUNY) in New York on Tuesday night, officials say.
Footage online shows masked counter-demonstrators - supporting Israel - attacking their rivals with sticks and attempting to dismantle barricades.
US universities have been gripped by protests over the war in Gaza, as students demand a boycott of companies and individuals with ties to Israel.

Is protesting against Israel's actions necessarily anti-Semitic? It seems to me that, for the most part, they are protesting the Israeli government's actions - not Jewishness in itself. The anti-Semitism angle seems like more of a media and politician spin.

It seems to me that the reason it's thought of as anti-Semitic is because when hundreds of thousands of Muslims were killed in the civil war in Syria and also in Yemen and when 2 million Muslims were forcibly moved by the government of Pakistan into Afghanistan no one protested but when Jew are involved people protested.

What’s confusing about this whole situation is that it’s possible to both condemn the Hamas attacks _and_ think Israel has been more than heavy-handed in its response to October 7th. It’s possible to support Palestinian freedom from Israeli state oppression without being antisemitic just as it’s possible to support Israel against Islamist aggression without being anti-Muslim. These 2 things are not necessarily mutually exclusive. Too many folk are either/or in this conflict when it’s possible to be both/and.
I’m not sure why politicians and the media think we are not capable of understanding nuances and distinctions.

The biggest question is, why haven't all these other Muslim and Arab countries who are protesting this conflict take in all these Muslim/Arab Palestinians. I mean there's only a couple/few millions of them, they could all easily save them? Why, because even they don't want them into their countries. Look at Europe, they were being labelled as racists and inhumane for being reluctant to let in migrants coming from who knows where? All that happened in 1948 and the period before that is complex. The creation of Israel was also complex with the problems of the stern leage, the killing of Bernadotte and so on.
But one thing is that Egypt, Syria and some other Arab states started a war which they lost. Then you have the 6 day war. Israel certainly have illegal settlements on the west bank but it was many years since they left Gaza.

I found the situation quite a bit ironic. Iron and Israel, who politically gestured to launch missile attacks, want to talk peacefully, but the universities are unable to solve problems so they want fist fights. The right-wing congress not only failed to crack down on racial segregation and Islamophobia in Israel but they also provided Israel weapons and political indulgence from UN interventions. But they are asking the heads of universities what they are gonna do to crack down on protesters, who are ambiguously defined as anti-semites. I will be delirious to watch this comedy if they are not real.
