    If you're curious, the car in the game is a Mazda MX-5/Miata, which was sold in Japan as a Eunos Roadster at the time. Seems the Roaster '98 crew were a little more aspirational - that was a Lamborghini Diablo VT Roadster. Given the lack of explicit branding I guess neither game was actually licensed, though I guess it's possible that it was in some territories?

      nastybun You're correct. This game was made to capitalize on the Miata/mx5/roadster excitement of the early 90's. The game is supposed to simulate a Japanese"One Make" race, which is very similar to the race class known as a Spec Miata in the United States. Because of the strict budget of the game they never actually licensed the Roadsters likeness from Mazda. Tonkin House supposedly received some heat from Mazda because of the lack of licensing, which is what's believed to be the reason for lack of non- domestic releases; sadly, there's very little definitive information from Tonkin House as to exact reasons for lack of localization. Now, as to Roadsters and Roadster 98, I believe those are both just coincidences. The word "Roadster" is much more generic in the western part of the world. "Roadster" was most likely chosen because of the association with cars in general rather than with Mazda's Roadster. I feel that this game, Roadster's most interesting aspects is it's connection with the Miata/Mx5. It's a brief love letter to Japanese most iconic 2-seat convertible, made by people that genuinely seem to care about the Miata/Mx5. This game was made to capitalize on the excitement for the Roadster, but it was made with love and understanding of the Roadster.

      At least in the case of Roadsters '98 I'm guessing Titus still had the Lamborghini license from some of their previous releases, with Automobili Lamborghini on N64 being the most recent one at that point, though it seems that they lost the license around that time, as Roadsters/Roadsters Trophy ended up having that Diablo under a generic name, though it wasn't the only unlicensed car. It's amusing as Automobili Lamborghini featured various other non-Lambo cars (such as a Dodge Viper and two different Ferraris) as rivals/unlockables, all unlicensed. Even more amusing is that one of the actual licensed cars on Roadsters ended up being the MX-5, albeit a newer model.

      Ya, critics were not too kind to it with New Super Mario just months away

    • @discountchocolate4577
      @discountchocolate4577 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I suspect one reason Super Princess Peach got trashed so much was that it forces you to backtrack and rescue every toad before allowing you to fight the final boss, and fails to inform you of this fact until you reach the door to the final boss.
      The other most likely reason is the clearly problematic (if not blatantly reactionary) presentation of Peach's powerups being driven by extreme emotional states ("irrational women, amirite fellas?").

    • @discountchocolate4577
      @discountchocolate4577 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      On top of this, at the time of NSMB's release it had been the first time we'd seen a brand new 2D Mario since the SNES. We look back on the NSMB series with scorn nowadays for being the most stagnant set of Mario platformers but the original DS game truly felt like a breath of fresh air at the time.

    • @eeveeon4081
      @eeveeon4081 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Discount Chocolate Some people seriously use the Peach having extreme emotion thing against the game, even though many enemies and the bosses have the same extreme sudden outbursts. This would make Peach the only character in the game to control her emotions! The only toad that gave me trouble my first time through was a toad in World 5, where you had to go down a random patch of quicksand. Besides that, the toads weren't bad to find.

    I'm genuinely surprised how pleasant it looks to play.
    That sounds like damning with faint praise but it's the first Gameboy racer that I could imagine actually having fun with back in the day. Like they actually designed it appropriately for play on that platform.

      If you like the gameplay of Roadster you should check out Micro Machines, it's great fun to play, and the Game Boy conversion was well done... th-cam.com/video/7JwXWwjBJmQ/w-d-xo.html

    YAY I was hoping for a new one of these on my birthday - thanks man! Just realized, by Retronaut standards, since Super Princess Peach is over 10 years old it's technically retro...would love one on the game. Always intrigued me that it happened, then just sort of passed.

    This is the kind of game you make a full retrospective dive like Video Works for. Gotta speak up for the games that fell by the wayside but were admirable nonetheless.
    Clearly TOSE put some senior staff on this, because it looks rock solid.

    I fairly recently acquired Sports Collection which has this game on it. I can not figure it out, but how do you go fast? It seems I'm stuck in low gear and lose the race within the first 3 seconds never catching up stuck at 110km/h

    • @vaguerant
      @vaguerant 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Just found this myself so I'm spreading the news: A button is low gear accelerate and B button is high gear accelerate. A+B together is brake. So you start out holding A, then switch to holding B when you want to shift up.

    It’s too bad this didn’t make the trip stateside. It looks like fun. I look forward to the next episode! I really enjoyed Radar Mission, so I’ll be curious to hear your thoughts on the game.

    Interesting game here! I'd never heard of Roadster. Shame it never came to Canada, because it looks like something I would have enjoyed back in the day.
    I'm looking forward to Radar Mission in the next episode. I actually own that game -- my mom bought it for me at a second-hand store when I was a kid. It's short and simple, but a fairly solid take on Battleship -- plus it's got that sub vs. sub battle mode. The highlight is its surprisingly good soundtrack!
