This car is almost exactly the EV I was hoping manufacturers would create, a nice light coupe with modest range, good styling, minimalist decluttered interior. Awesome proportions, styling and weight distribution. I think Caterham have hit this one out of the park, it's nice to see a design that doesn't go overboard with weird futuristic looks. Price is obviously going to be the main blocker for most people due to all the carbon and weight reduction involved which is obviously difficult to avoid in order to compensate for the battery weight. Props to Caterham for leading the pack and demonstrating what's possible. This design shows that hope is not lost for small sporty coupes in the shift towards an electrified future.

What petrol head is going to spend 80k on an electric sports car with limited range that makes no noise? It should be phev with the engine from a GR Yaris (Lightest 3 cylinder engine in the world), 260bhp and remove that silly battery that compromises the driving position. Now you’ve got a car with 400bhp+, unlimited range, improved driving position and a great noise!

I've said it before on other channels: this thing is a masterpiece! Not ridiculously priced, not ridiculously heavy, not ridiculously powerful. Just the sweet spot that we all look for, only electric. Styling also in the sweet spot. I'm seeing a little Alpine in it, some Emira but also something else, something JDM about the rear three quarter? - can't put my finger on it. But Caterham getting Janarelly onboard is a stroke of genius too, as I believe his other designs also echo Caterham philosophy. I'm really excited to see this into production...

That is an extraordinarily beautiful piece of design. It's so nice to see something that isn't just another showy but lifeless rehash coming off the RCA design course production line. And something that isn't garish and tasteless. Anthony really has nailed so many aspects of car design here; the stance, proportions, front/rear balance, the wheel arch to windscreen height with the gentle mid-line fold, the wheel arch to bonnet relationship, the haunches to rear quarterlight coming inwards to meet the rear and those gorgeous little darts on the boot lid. The rear is absolutely superb with the faceting, shape and great braking lights. Even the sloped up rear bumper works really well. It really is a masterpiece of penmanship and artistry; a point proven by the fact that it manages not to ape any other car. I think it beats both of the new Gordon Murray cars, and they are already at the top of new car design. I'm not entirely convinced by the Caterham nose but I understand why it's there (though I would de-emphasise it). Dare I say it's what the Emira should have been?
Let's hope nothing changes between this and production.

Great philosophy, great attitude, great design, great car. All at the right time. And it gives the buyer that small town feeling that you buy a car from Caterham. Not from a dealer like with Ferrari and other big shots.
Caterham will be growing faster then they will imagine.

At last a manufacturer who is looking at design in a sensible way, how the car drives and not producing an overweight 0-60 rocket ship. This car is an automotive work of art, whatever the motive power. As ever, thank you Harry for bringing us an adult conversation about such things

Bob came across really well, very well thought out. He’s right in what he was saying about the future of automotive is powered by electricity but depends on where it comes from. Harry, bless him I could imagine him walking away going great car but would be even better with a combustion engine.

A grown-up Caterham, now there's a thing. I like the Elan concept of thinking that's gone into Project V - lightweight, small, and nimble. A heavy battery pack in order to achieve rapid acceleration which you will most likely hardly ever use, at the expense of handling seems counter-intuitive for a sports car, so well done Caterham for staying true to your ethos.

Fantastic looking car but Harry confronts the elephant in the room..who in their right mind will pay 80k for a fully electric sports car that’s bound to have a short range, no driver involvement and no noise. Surely a 3 cylinder ice with Phev driving the rear wheels would be the way to go. Sure it would add 200kg to the weight but it would make it useable and desirable. Madness!

While Lotus dropped an (in my opinion) overpowered SUV with a footprint too big for most UK roads and parking spaces, it's nice to see a company make a nice small car to lead the way in a segment that certainly isn't facing extinction

Well done Caterham on a stunning design. Would look even better if the mirrors were in the quarterlight and not sprouting out of the door skin like so many current designs. The sides look so much cleaner without that! Looks very Jaguar CX75 on the nose. I wish them well.

They distract from the shape of the car.

  • @awild10
    @awild10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Looks great and certainly has potential. I think they’re right to focus on lightweight and driving fun. That may mean early cars have only 100-150mile range but then I don’t think anyone needing more would necessarily be looking at one of these and as a weekend toy it’s probably ample. Later on battery technology will improve and the range will improve with it but if they tried for a 300mile range from the off they’d need to create space to package a much bigger and heavier battery. Really hope it sells well. The Alpine has shown that great looking and fun car is not necessarily a guarantee for sales success but this deserves to do well if they can get it right.

That is a pretty PRETTY car! Do I wish it used an ICE? Yes. But if the future is EV, then this gives me hope. It's quite possibly the first EV that appeals, although right now that's based purely on its looks. Ironically, I also loved the Caterham 21, which was another pretty car. I wish this new one more luck

This is absolutely gorgeous. The interior is perfect too. I sat in it at Goodwood and it was just a lovely place to be. I'm very much in the camp of being very doubtful about the mass push to EV with all the negative environmental issues it brings. However, I would love one of these and I say that as a 7 owner.

Lots of folks calling out design influences, but nobody saying the obvious one, possibly the most strikingly beautiful car ever designed… the Corvette Stingray. We got a bit of Mako Shark going on here with those curves, the swoopy fenders and tight waist. Sure, the proportions are all different. But if you took a classic Stingray and shifted it to a mid-engine configuration, moved the cabin forward and pulled in that enormous hood, I think the result would look a lot like this. And that's a very good thing.

If we have to lose the noise, I'm glad people are out there making sure that we don't lose good handling as well. I hope that they are wildly successful and that other manufactures will see that weight is the enemy. Ideally I'd love to see weight savings in the actual components, the batteries, the construction materials and geometry. That way we get to have our cake and eat it too. I love his philosophy of not copying the trend of more and more power and more and more weight. The design, gorgeous. Some slight tweaks in the rear and this will be near perfect in my eyes.

It makes perfect sense to me for the direction the big cites are going with emissions, if you do a 50ish mile round trip to work on your own why not, ive watched daily drivers on euro 5 emissions plummet in price so this could be future proofing wonderful cars from Caterham, like the Cayenne saved Porsche, a horrid car but a need to a company these days.
Also an added bonus the mrs stays at home when you take both kids out.

Great video and the car looks brilliant. It's nice to see a manufacturer looking at this solution with realistic weight and handling goals. The best cars in the world are those that handle and not just go fast in a straight line. If all consumers were interested in was acceleration drag racing would surely be the most popular motorsport in the world.
