    I think the implication of bigeneration is that because the toymaker has bent the fabric of reality so much, myths and legends can just come true at the drop of a hat, thus bigeneration

      Is this going to be prior to regenerating into Nine or in his alternate "Forever Eight" universe that was caused by the bigeneration (presumably they are all in their own universes, not the same one as Fourteen and Fifteen, although them all just missing each other could be comical)?

    I found the clothing regenerating with 13 to 14 and the fact that it never got explained in Universe pretty annoying but Donna recognising the arpeggio or 14 settling down didn't bother me as much. I remember Donna justifying recognising the arpeggio because of familiarity due to Rose's music lessons or something and this seemed good enough for me.
    For 14 settling down, I felt his expressions about 15 "Flying off" dealt with the emotions the Doctor would feel having to settle down pretty well even though he got to keep his Tardis so could go anywhere in time and space still. Additionally, if 12 can chill on Darillium for 24 years, it's not that much of a stretch.

      The clothing regeneration with the doctor happened before, not really the first time. It goes way way back to the old classic Doctor Who. It just doesn't happen a lot in the Doctor's regeneration process, but it happened more than once. And for most of the time, the Doctor is too tired and sleepy from dying right after the regeneration. Maybe it just doesn't always have enough regeneration energy to regenerate his clothes as well?

      I completely agree with your assessment.
      For me, the resolutions of these special episodes are the dumbest Davies could come up with.
      In _"The Star Beast"_ you have Donna saving herself from death caused from the Meta-Crisis condition because Davies basically forgot how genetic inheritance actually works (since it's a copy, not a pouring - even if Donna passed her regenerative energy to Rose, she should have had the same amount of energy regardless), presented it as an "of course" moment without it being so.
      Not mentioning the Doctor does not know that female Time Lords can better control regeneration than male ones; like a human not knowing what is a period and how it works. Expect we are talking about an advanced alien like the Doctor. Suuuureeee, buddy...
      With _"The Giggle"_ we ended up with the Bi-generation, that came out from no where at the last moment as a supposedly Gallifreyan myth the Doctor never mentioned before and just happened to have remembered in that occasion.
      The Timeless Child concept was created from ideas and snippets already shown in the course of 60 years of episodes, and introduced slowly across an entire series; the Hybrid myth mentioned on series 9 with Capaldi was cited over an entire series as well.
      The Bi-generation..? Not... a... single... mention... until... too... late.
      Without considering the fact the concept itself is not explained at all.
      How people who despised (and still do) the Timeless Child consider this to be good or even better..? Seriously... how..?
      Another dumb thing you mentioned is how the Toymaker's ball challenge ends.
      I differ from your consideration on this, but not on it being dumb. Since the Toymaker is basically a god-like figure, even with two Doctors it should have been a challenge to beat him.
      Emphasis on "should have been".
      What is the dumbest way to loose for a villain like the Toymaker..?
      Simple: clearly stating the main (and only) rule of the game is simply to not let the ball touch the ground; ending up not catching it, but still having plenty of time nonetheless for taking it back since it's falling from a tall building (technically it hasn't touched the ground yet, so the game is still on), because he has the ability of teleporting instantly in any portion of space and time; and, yet... forgetting about it because the plot demands so.
      No answer whatsoever about the regenerated clothes and Fourteenth's face (I don't care about how Donna feels about it, as a "sign of him wanting to return to them" - it's just that... a mere sensation. That's it.). It happened because... it just happened. End of the story.
      The 60th anniversary specials became a dumb fest, because of those resolutions. What a treat, eh..?

    • @JB-ys8ct
      @JB-ys8ct 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      To be fair, this has always been something RTD has done. I'm a big RTD fan but I do think he often writes himself into a corner where the only solution is to push some big red magical button to save the day. E.g. Series 1 finale was Rose absorbing the time vortex essentially becoming godlike and wiping the Daleks into dust, Series 2 finale was Cybermen/Daleks being sucked into the void, Series 3 finale was the world saying the word "doctor" and the Doctor becoming Space Jesus and then the Series 4 finale was the DoctorDonna. Similarly with the 60th, the Star Beast had the "letting it go" as the reset button, Wild Blue Yonder was a wildcard as it didn't really have a reset button resolution like the others and for The Giggle it was the game of catch.
      I think the main problem is that RTD has a habit of trying to raise the stakes too much but as a result there's no clever way to save the day other than a bit of nonsense and a reset button.

    I think the biggest challenge this new era faces is that RTD1 was so long ago that we remember it too fondly. We remember the good stuff like The End of the World, Doomsday, Utopia, Midnight, Blink,... But we tend to forget or not consider the bad, like Fear Her, Love & Monsters, 42,...
    So any time we get a bad episode now, we'll just keep comparing it to the "good old days"

  • @jvblhc

    I didn't care for much of the Chibnall era, thought, yes, there were some great episodes. But most of them were just bland. I was hoping RTD would come back with a bang, but as soon as he started with the whole Davros nonsense (P.S., RTD, that thing Davros rides in is NOT a wheelchair!) my heart sunk. The whole Donna and "Rose" thing just "letting it go" was, once again, RTS not knowing to do a good ending.

    While I completely agree about most of the plot contrivence (one of the big flaws of doctor who) I actually love the concept of Bigeneration. And the explanation is actually pretty easy:
    The doctor simply wanted two opposite things at once. He subconsciously wanted some rest AND he wanted to keep going. On one hand if he stopped, he would let the universe in potential danger and on the other hand if he went on he would have died of exhaustion.
    There was simply no choice, he had to do both at once. That's why he splitted himself into two entities, one that kept all the fatigue and the other that is completely free of it hence why the new doctor is so joyfull and playfull. This is also why the episode was centered around a game. It was the last game of the doctor but also his first game.
    The concept of biregeneration is mythical and self explanatory because there are very few timelord thinking like a human as the doctor said once before: Human have this particularity of wanting two opposite things at the same time !
    The doctor just became more human. That's all :)

    • @Cosmic_Nite
      @Cosmic_Nite  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ngl that's actually a good explanation of bigeneration. I just wish this stuff was better conveyed in the episode, and perhaps it would've been if the plot of The Giggle wasn't condensed into an hour

    • @c4n940
      @c4n940 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Cosmic_Nite I felt that this was pretty obvious.
      In the recent serie (I didn't watch the classical yet, just finished the entire new serie just now) Regeneration are all triggered by a specific events, but the faces (and unconscious personnalities) that the doctor is taking are always based on their deep desires to avoid their reality, to accept themself or to become someone better.
      If we look at the narration, we can fairly say that 9th first took the grumpy face of 10th to put some distance between him and Rose.
      10th transformed into the overally quirky 11th to overcome his fear of change.
      11th transformed into the old teacher like 12th (officially) to remind himself that he needs to act, even if it means saving only one person. But in reality I think this transformation is much deeper. While the speach of 11th transforming was all about the acceptation of change as part of the continuation of who we are.. The moment the doctor changed, Clara said something that sticked with me, out of friendship, or love, she said "please don't change!". And it had so much effect that the face instantly changed.
      In reality, I think the doctor got shocked by her words in the very last moment and changed into this "mean" face to make a point to her and to himself that he will still be the doctor and a continuation of themself, no matter what face they take. (that's one of the reason why I love so much the relationship between the Doctor and Clara, its full of conflict and love)
      And that's when 12th remember Clara again with the help of Bill, on a field of the christmas miracle that the Doctor understands the power of memories and kindness, but its also there that the Doctor asks a question to nardole who is telling him that he is needed "can't I have peace ? - Can't I rest ?"
      This leaves us to believe that the next transformation will be his final journey. And for this final journey the doctor has only one desire, its to be someone "nice". That why he transformed into 13th, him having experienced so much kindness and amazingness from women before.
      And finally.. because the doctor is the doctor.. 13th is pushing herself to the limit toward the entire FLUX event in a climax that she literally divided herself into three parts to create three different plans.. And the doctor being the doctor, she didn't stopped, and in front of the dawn/dusk, she wished to see more "I want to see what is coming next"..
      .. but her mind just said "stop, its too much!" and that's why she transformed into 14th/10th again. To remind themself to come back home and rest. But that is impossible if you are the doctor, because if you are the doctor, you are kind, loving and a defender that people needs.
      So, because the doctor is becoming more human, because he is somewhat of a paradoxal fellow, and surely because he was influence by the non binarity of the Noble women.. he made the impossible happen and split himself in two thus refusing the binary of change and allowing himself to be tired and completely rested at the same time.
      Maybe the transformation of 14th was logical for me because I had fresh memories of the past struggles of the doctor, but this dichotomy between his will and his state is something that was hinted for a long time.
      Now.. 15th has to face another demon that was ressurected by his adventure with Ruby.. his past. The fact that he is an orphan and therefore the fact that he was abandonned.
      He will have to change again and face that demon.

    I don't think stuff like finding the Stokey Bill "hidden in every screen" needed an explanation, and I do think that it's nice that Fourteen gets to retire and be happy, *because* it's a thing that Nine and Ten kept saying they could never be happy, but I don't like that he gets his own TARDIS and that Ncuti is split off. No matter what RTD says, Ncuti is not just A Doctor and not THE Doctor, and that's a really shitty place to have thim start. That said, I do absolutely love him hugging Fourteen and I cried like a little baby. The end of the Metacrisis thing, and the weird, like... trans positive Female Essentialism feels like an RTD ending, like with the way that Last of the Time Lords ended with Martha getting everyone to clap their hands for The Doctor.

  • @hblancoramos6873
    @hblancoramos6873 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Honestly, (great great great video btw, I love your vids) about the doctor retiring, I don't think you can bring to the table the multiple instances where the Doctor says that couldn't retire. That's the obvious reason why should. Clips from 9th and 11th saying that are shown saying that needs to be occupied, but says that *because of trauma*, can't let themselve to do nothing and be alone with their thoughts. We all know what happens when they do. The Doctor is, until bigeneration, a being that doesn't want to recognize that has to stop, because no one can do what they do. Their words about not wanting to retire are very distorted by personal context. To me, are glaring instances of they needing that healing time in peace, doing stuff, not being alone, but not having life risking situations

  • @HuntingViolets
    @HuntingViolets 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I feel that "The Giggle" is still Fourteen's final episode, and Fifteen gets much more time in a regeneration episode than any previous new Doctor, so I can't really feel he's getting short shrift there. I'm saying goodbye to the previous Doctor in that episode (even though he's not totally gone in this case--well, the Doctor is never totally gone, as the Doctor is one person, in theory, through many stages of life), and the first new Doctor episode is the real hello. Of course, there wasn't even much time to get used to having Fourteen. It might have been hard to get Tennant for a longer run, but maybe a longer run would have helped. Some of the things in the episode do allow people to say Gatwa isn't the "real" Doctor, but those are the people who were saying it about Whittaker, no bigeneration needed.
    Very good video (hope it doesn't seem I'm saying it isn't). :)

    @Nyzackon 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    Great video! I do disagree that Fifteen doesn't get time in the spotlight in The Giggle, though. He easily upstages David Tennant, which is quite the feat, with Tennant respectfully toning down his stage presence once they defeat the Toymaker together.
    I honestly loved Ncuti in The Giggle more than in Ruby Road, and was waiting for more moments like that.

    The Arpeggio was a massive reach. But, there do seem to be seeds of Deux Ex Machina, that are worrying. Not quite as bad as Chris Chibnall's endless coincidences, and instantly resolved cliff hangers. I'll certainly watch this series, with high expectations. It does feel that RTD is trying to wrangle new writers into his style, he has admitted that there's difficulties there.

  • @Toshiro287

    My theory is that Mrs. Flood is the God of stories or something along those lines. It's pretty clear she's a part of the Pantheon and breaks the 4th wall directly. She wants stories to work out, so they do. Now this is probably reaching and trying really hard to give the benefit of the doubt that plot holes are part of the story. But I love Ncuti and Davies has been a good writer for most of his time.
    The part that I am confused and excited for is that Sutekh was the father and mother and other of all the gods. What god would be stronger or above them? Others were mentioned, but how are any of them going to be a bigger threat than Sutekh? Or that's part of it. The time vortex and how easy it was for Doc/Ruby to catch them with the leash makes no sense other than to make the story work. Same with how beating Sutekh reversed only specific deaths. The mother plotline being kind of a let down isn't really a plot hole, but could also been seen as a family love story, which Mrs Flood would help happen. If she's stronger than Sutekh for whatever reason, she could have manipulated them into not being able to see the mother.
    The power creep is insane and I can't envision the next villain. The flux killed half the universe and has only been mentioned once or twice. The Doctor is from outside of time/reality and at least a billion years old. How many recent villains have been from outside reality or time? The Pantheon seem to be more magical. Kate Stewart did say that UNIT has been running into more supernatural events. So is Doctor Who moving from a Sci Fi show to a fantasy show? It's always been both, but you know what I mean.
    Are show runners after Chibnell just trying to ignore what he did as much as possible? Each showrunner will look at it and wonder how to make it work or how to make it make sense. How many of their responses are going to be "Let the next showrunner deal with it"? Will we get an answer this era or will it be addressed in another 20 years? Doctor Who was already beyond comprehension in scope, but opening reality or dimensions is an insanely big step.
    Edit; I was meaning to say that Bi-Generation was supposed to be a MYTH. Myths are stories. God of stories could be able to make those stories true? And this turned into an optimistic theory to complaining about Chib. I really did enjoy several of 13's episodes.

    I think the bi-generation works at turning the multi doctor stories on there head but it doesn’t work on a permanency level cause it was properly explained in the episode and I think the special’s biggest issue was runtime cause at least for the star beast and the giggle they felt rushed in place like being in the toymaker’s realm and the 2 games the doctor played I feel all 3 specials should have been set in toymaker’s realm even if we didn’t actually see the toymaker until special 3 like we got cause somewhere in special 2 they could have realized they are in his realm after thinking back on the events of star beast and have special 3 be the big showdown with the toymaker

  • @MarkMichalowski
    @MarkMichalowski 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Yes, on so many levels. Yes.
    A simpler, more "logical" solution would surely to have been for Donna's repressed metacrisis energy to have been the catalyst for triggering the bigeneration: Donna and Rose had managed to keep a lid on it for all of Rose's life, but when the Toymaker shot the Doctor with his space laser, the only way to save the Doctor was for the "DonnaRose" to dump the excess energy back into the Doctor, forcing the split into Tennant AND Gatwa.
    Problem solved.

    Ncuti gets some good stuff in The Giggle but it's not his story. Church is. This is the finale of 14's story so of course he's the focus. 15 got to do more than regenerations usually do in the episode they first appear in.
    It's not the first time The Doctor was confined to Earth. He was forced to as 3. He was kinda forced to as 12, since he had to look after Missy. 14 is a different man than 11. And under very different circumstances. While I think part of it is 11 getting easily bored, he was also the last regeneration, or so he thought, and he didn't like being alone with his thoughts for too long. He tried very hard not to dwell on things too much. 14 is choosing to slow down for awhile. Stay mostly in one place for a time with some friends. Try to enjoy life without running away from it. And maybe his friends can help him work through some of the stuff that's happened. I dunno.

    The whole can't have a life like this thing being subverted is the point. He doesn't have a sense of normalcy juat jumping from one nightmare and hortific thing to another. The Nobles can give him that and he can finally talk about it to others and evrn get therapy for it the few adventures he can have are just there to sayisfy his wonderlust until he feels ok enough again and we don't even know how long he is gonna last. Worrying about the natural deaths of Nobles is something he has to get over because that is the story if everybody, your loved ones dying especially elders. The point is he never trued tried this before not evrn duting his exile or vault guarding days and 24 years with River ends in a tragedy so it doesn't completely work. He just needs to relax and take it easy and stop being the super cop of the universe for a while until he gets ok. It is definitely not character assassination and he does show signs of exhaustion not physical bur mental abd dmotional. An alien imitating his friend and taunting him broke him and Toymaker's play also made him depressed. He needed to process everything and slowdown. Those eleven has to move around and can't be patient style moments don't really diminish any of this because we are talking about the doctor in different stages of his life and he doesnt give up travelling. Donna point makes sense with Rose travelling but she just learned it and Doc probably made it sound less dangerous and just a little trip. All of the stuff you said about the music and unit stuff really don't work for me because İ suspended my disbelief lmao or just didnt think of it like Jodie ones. the video was working for me but towards the end it just went weird sorry just like Star Beast's ending☠️

      I think the whole the Doctor looks like Tennant again so he’s find Donna and settle down doesn’t really work for one main reason. Ten/Donna wasn’t the last major time the Doctor had a family. The story doesn’t really need Tennant and Tate for this to work. The specials could have been about the Doctor looking like 11 again and reuniting with the Ponds so he could settle down with them. This implication that Donna was his last family kinda feels like a middle finger to the companions we’ve had since.

    I agree with everything you said on this video absolutely spot on.
    As regards to the bi-generation i can accept it as a one-off new thing even though RTD did a dis-service to his new star Ncuti Gatwa, Tennant should had just regenerated but if this became an ongoing thing it would make me want to switch off this show because regeneration was always one of the exciting and mysterious interesting aspects of the show and it has consequences which i like so the bi-generation kind of ruins it and it's lazy the past Doctors belong in their time streams there not "just" around for the sake of it it's just RTD trying to excuse his lazy writing ideas and he has ran out of ideas he's repeating the same thing as his first episode "Rose" and it proves my point too that bringing RTD back was a mistake they should had went with someone new and someone whose not a fan like another Philip Hinchliffe type of showrunner RTD was great for his time but he's a tired 60 year old showrunner and they should give the job to someone atleast abit younger like Toby Whithouse or J. Michael Straczynski or a female showrunner would be progressive RTD needs to keep in mind this is science fiction it's not a soap opera.

    Not that anyone should know but I did predict this new era as being a challenge for Nu-who fans. I think RTD wanted to end this era and he did that with his favorite actor having a happy ending. He also loves to chuck in a new lore like the bi-generation being throughout previous Doctors. Like Chibnalls timeless child nonsense. This is pure conjecture but I think the new series will be very different to what has gone before. Much like classic to Nu-who and I think it’s necessary. Even though I get into debates with people about how much influence Disney and Sony may have, I think it will be significant enough to make the show a little less BBC. I love Ncuti but I predict his exit will be announced by the end of the first season. They’re pumping these series out fast and he’ll probably be gone while we’re still watching him. Always remember that TV is not what it used to be and the pressure to be successful is harder than ever. RTD has a great eye and fantastic writer but I do wonder whether he still has the ability to pull in the Generation Alfa’s.

    The Doctor says he can't live that type of life because they've been running forever and not really confronting anything. Doc's had a lot of massive bombs recently as well. 15 did say it was a version of therapy for them. I don't think it was character assassination, I think it was the Doctor trying to confront and heal things that they've been thru. Which they've never done and that's why 15 is such a different Doctor. He's not weighed down by it anymore. We don't know how long 14 was there. He still has a TARDIS.

    DW needs drastically to get back to keeping to a main narrative story of quality. It also needs the soap opera tendencies of RTD to be curtailed. Do I believe these changes will happen. No sadly I don't. Bad DW is bad but what we have had for years has been a process of gradual destruction.

    my biggest issue with the specials was honestly that they don't feel like anniversary specials at all. it genuinely just feels like series 4 part 2. where's the celebration of 60 years of doctor who? i get that they had david in because ncuti and jodie were both going to be unavailable for the filming block and they had to release a special because of the anniversary but i genuinely think they should've just gotten paul instead. not even to be the 14th doctor. i think ncuti should've been 14 and paul shouldve just come in to do some kind of fun and cool anniversary type thing but basically as some kind of lets jump back in time and see what eight was doing thing. mostly because i'm still mad that they AGAIN had a chance to put paul in a damn anniversary special and didn't do it!!!! he's such an awesome doctor and he has less than 2 hours of screentime. and like... these episodes aren't even that good??? like theyre fine??? there was no anniversary stuff???

    • @cfsfilms5091
      @cfsfilms5091 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I dunno if it's fair to say there was *no* anniversary stuff. The Star Beast is an adaptation of a famous 4th Doctor comic story with very faithful alien designs, the set of specials bring back a classic (Mel) and a modern (Donna) companion, and the Toymaker is a 1st Doctor villain who hadn't been in the main show for 57 years. It was definitely lower key than the 50th and the references to the past were both subtler and more obscure, but they were present.
      That said, Paul McGann should really get more chances to do non-audio adventures, can't fault you there.

      @@Cosmic_Nite the coincidences you label are just basic plot points😭 "Ryan finds something in the woods that's been there for weeks" "An Alien attacks a train" "A guy who wants revenge on the Stenza takes the Stenza's pod" even the cliffhanger ending is explained in the next episode with the teleport taking them to where the planet should be before it moved out of orbit. When you compare this to Partners in Crime (an episode I love mind you) where the Doctor and Donna park right next to each-other, investigate the same company, at the same time, in the same building, then go to two houses on the same street, then go back to the building etc etc- personally I just feel like this criticism isnt consistently held across the board😂

    • @Cosmic_Nite
      @Cosmic_Nite  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@dwfan91- The explanation of the planet being moved could work, but the fact that the ship that saves them shows up immediately after they teleport there is a hell of a coincidence. And I get why you could make a comparison to Partners In Crime, but tbh I think that episode works better because it does the whole coincidence thing in a more self-aware way. It's portrayed as destiny or some external force (possibly Dalek Caan) trying to bring them together multiple times, which ig you could argue is still kinda weird and forced. But these coincidences happen so much that they lead you to believe there's something bigger at play, like the Doctor and Donna are being brought together for a reason, which ends up being confirmed towards the end of the series. I totally agree that a lot of criticism against the Chibnall era isn't given to other eras where it should be tho, and I'll fully admit I have been guilty of constantly viewing the Chibnall era in a more harsh way than I would others, but that's something that's gradually been changing as I've gone back to the era a few times and given it a few more chances

You could see it in the first Gatwa episode, it looked like it came straight out of Disney. The style of monster was Disney, the special effects looked Disney, and the singing was Disney. And then The Church On Ruby Road got more viewers than the latter two. In what world is that a failure? There was a nearly 40% drop in viewing figures between the first and final episodes of series 1 back in 2005, would you consider that a failure? Compared to that, the ratings of the recent specials have remained pretty consistent. Have you actually looked at the viewing figures yourself? I promise it doesn't hurt to do your own research on things and then come to your own conclusion.
