@@sr_chunli as for me, i didn’t hate it but i felt absolutely nothing for the characters and didn’t feel their chemistry at all, also disliked how the guy is described as being soooo ‘big’ in every single chapter
@@FANGRUNlN Yeah, there were no proper character writing and character development. Everything was poorly written. And as for the “big” in this book, it doesn’t hold a candle to “the hating game” this one was so bad and cringe I couldn’t even finish it!

It's funny how at the beginning he talks about the irony of reading a book called "there's no such thing as an easy job" when he is a youtuber who reads books (in theory an easy job) and that reading this book has cost him so much, it seems that even he is part of the story.

my review of this comment:
Going into this reading journey i had no idea what to expect. In the opening few words - “quote of the day” - you really captioned the intention of your statement as well as the attention of the reader. My thoughts while reading these words were simply questioning how could possibly narrow down all of iconic and relatable quotes said by both Jack Edwards and Dakota Warren in this cinematic masterpiece of a double book review. However, when i got into the fantastic quote by Jack Edwards i found that you captured the essence and humour of the individual perfectly. I loved reading this comment and i would definitely recommend it to a friend.
Dakota and Jack are DUO GOALS 🙌🙌🙌 they have so much fun together!

I loved the idiot when I read it, I like Batuman’s writing and I think I see myself in her at some points of the story. I’ve also behaved in ways that now embarrass me for guys who didn’t deserve anything. I also loved that it was set in the 90s❣️ its second part, either/or, came out last month and I’ve really enjoyed it too. It’s lovely to see selin evolve
@@user-qu8zs7vs1x hey! I feel you, I’ve read all three sally rooney novels and I sometimes find the characters annoying. In that sense, I’d say I like elif Batuman better, selin is not perfect but I didn’t find her annoying at all, in fact, she’s self critical at times but not in a hurtful way like Rooney’s characters. And I wouldn’t describe her as passive at all (she ends up in a country because the guy she likes is going there lol).
I also found Selin’s thoughts and reflections very hilarious and relatable and I highlighted a lot of quotes (my either/or copy is full of ear pup folded pages haha). I’ve read both novels and I think it’s really nice to follow this character and see her growth through college years, in an unfiltered and realistic manner

@@ilvy5285 it amazes me the fact that no one has compared this two authors yet, and I find comparisons unnecessary but I personally prefer Elif Batuman’s novels
Cinderella is dead is actually a really good book. It’s a sapphic book about the kingdom cinderella lived in but as a dystopia 100 years after her death. A black girl is a lesbian who runs away from the ball where all the young girls are expected to be forced into marriages without their consent. She teams up with one of the step-sister’s decedents and the fairy godmother/witch and try take down the king. It’s absolutely amazing.
I lovedddd "There's No Such Thing as an Easy Job" !! I was honestly a little sad when she left the cracker package job lol.
I was surprised by the blurb on the back of your copy because the one I bought from a Japanese bookstore in the U.S. didn't focus on the surveillance job and instead mentioned the several jobs she moves through in the book. I agree that it was pretty slow and could be repetitive, but overall it was an enjoyable and laidback read that I would reread in the future. I also loved "Convenience Store Woman" !

Well one I’m pretty sure La passe miroir of Christelle dabos is translated, apparently Wikipedia is telling me the English name of the first volume is the mirror visitor it’s a fantasy that won a contest of a publishing house that is heavily inspired of La cours des rois/rennes de France (the court ? of the king and queens of France) and social political of the late monarchy times.
I feel so validated. It took me so long to get through There's No Such Thing As An Easy Job for the exact same reasons. Maybe it was a poor translation, but wow. So much potential with very little to back it up in the end.
It took me so long to get through the woman of no importance because it was so dry but also because there was a ton of information within the book. I didn't find it boring but it was tough to read.

This book has everything. Poison, hidden treasure, lesbian shame, petty Bonapartists, and a Busoni Reversi. I'm reading "There's no such thing as an easy job" at the moment and... I disagree 😅 I'm absolutely drowning in uni exam preparations and work right now and my head is so full of everything that, in the breaks that I have, I don't want to think or focus or remember crazy plots and dozens of characters. I just want to exist and be taken away to another brain ( a bit similar to the protagonist, I guess) - and this book is AMAZING for that kind of headspace. I guess "mind-numbing" is the perfect word for this, as you said.
Oh I've been there I liked Bareback by Kit Whitfield as it let me travel to a different place for a bit without exams.

The Idiot is one of my favorites! The sequel book that came out recently called Either/Or was also incredible too. I can see how the book wouldn’t fit with everyone, but I really do love it. So many insightful lines, and I can relate with Dakota about how much I learned!! Reading both books expanded my vocabulary substantially😭😭. I’m embarrassed at how many words I had to google the definitions for. But I love Selin and her magnificently dry humor. So glad to see the book being talked about!
I read There’s No Such Thing as An Easy Job a couple months ago after being enticed by the cover in Selfridges during a lunch break haha. I had no idea it was trending/on tiktok, I loved it, and after finishing it I quit my job 😂
I love the style of writing and it was one of those cases where I was in the perfect mental space to relate to the character it was about. I also really want to have at least 3 of those jobs now 😅

Let me increase the excitement: the vibes in Shakespeare and Co are IMMACULATE. First of all, everyone there is so nice and easy to communicate with. I’ve had amazing conversations there about the song of Achilles and Agatha Christie and etc. . Second of all, most of the books there are English which is so nice. Third, YOU HAVE TO SEE THE UPSTAIRS. The upstairs has a piano, a board where you can leave a note, a bunch of vintage books. It’s all vibes. Last but not least, you have to get a coffee and a croissant from the Shakespeare and co coffee shop that’s right next to it.

“There’s No Such Thing As An Easy Job” can be thought of like each job is an anime episode of a series about this woman or a short manga book about this woman. I would recommend take each job one job a week.

@@sclumptuous you know, that’s a fair point. I have a somewhat tainted idea of what constitutes a (contemporary, at least) published fanfic book, a la After/Mortal Instruments/etc. but I shouldn’t judge the whole genre based on those few selections since it is so broad
@@firefly9187 there are quite a few classics that are sequences or prequels for books the authors didn't write which I believe classifies as fanfic.

As someone who has had many jobs and currently has 3 jobs right now, I really enjoyed There's no such thing as an easy job. I related it to it.

I love dry books but I feel like you have to be someone who really likes it to get enjoyment out of it.
"Less then zero" and "the memory police" had the same feel to me and I loved both.
Same with "wolf in white van". Also alot of T.C. Boyles books have a similar vibe of ordinary sahara

I wonder if I will like There’s No Such Thing As An Easy Job just because Jack said it’s similar to Lonely Castle in the Mirror and I adore that book so much. It was because I was genuinely interested in the characters and the repetitive conversations. I didn’t even notice that nothing is happening. Although I’m not so sure because I also work at a repetitive job and it’s killing me, slowly.
I've read it and really liked it! It is perhaps best suited as a book that you read slowly instead of trying to cram it in three days (or however long it took for Jack to read it) - as it is fairly slow paced. For me, I found the world building really rich, and as I had recently come over a burnout when I started reading it found it very relatable!
(Although, I have not read "Lonely Castle.." but I hope my insights help :) )

I read The Idiot earlier this year and I loved it. I've just read the sequel Either/Or and I adored it even more. They are the kind of books I need in my life right now beacuse - let's just say university isn't going the way I imagined it. It's funny because I completely misread The Idiot, romantisicing Ivan the way Selin does because that's how I reacted to similar situations in my own life. But Either/Or completely deconstructs their relationship and the kind of heteronormative forces that causes us to act that way and it literally broke my brain in the best way. I see how the books aren't for everyone but if anyone else is also wordy and insufferable (in a Holden Caulfield kind of way) like me, I definitely recommend.

Even though The Love Hypothesis isn’t ground breaking or anything, I think you should still read it for the experience! And it’s definitely much more exciting to read than There’s No Such Thing as an Easy Job lol

I've heard that's because lots was lost due to translation, I don't read the language myself though, this is something a friend of mine who read both versions told me the original one is way better than the translation because there is language subtlety.

love this duo! this was great! Jack, I wonder if your book just wasn't compatible with the way you usually consume novels? I think the way is a book is intended to be consumed vs how a person consumes it can severely lessen their reading experience if they are at odds.
From how you described it, it seems like the type of book is possibly best read in relatively short sittings per day/week, perhaps a structure tailored to someone who works a typical job and so has only a small window of time to read - especially since that is the same kind of person who would relate to this book. I haven't read it so I don't really know, just a theory.
Oh my god 90% of the books tiktok has recommended to me I've given 2 or 1 stars and then those other 10% have gotten 5 and are life changing! It takes a lot of sifting to find the diamonds in the rough
