    Great instructional video. Unfortunately my bolts were welded on and two of them were stripped by the 25x. Ended up being a hell of a job with blowtorches, diamond disc cutters, big screwdrivers and hammers all getting involved at one point or another!

    Well you made it look easy to remove the rotor,In my 2 mtb rotors are very tight i broke 2 🛠 and damage one screw already

    No star pattern for tightening up the rotor bolts?

    • @SmevMev
      @SmevMev 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +MatadorCE He said he does every second bolt which is basically the same thing, assuming he goes round 1, 3, 5, 2, 4, 6 until they're all tight

    • @AlexeiPavlov
      @AlexeiPavlov 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +MatadorCE he also forgot to apply medium strength Loc Tite.

      +MatadorCE went for every second bolt pattern, similar to the star pattern...

    Does the directionality of the rotor really affect heat dispersion? I thought it would have more to do with mechanical stress.

    I know that people are kind of poking fun at this video because of how basic it is, but having just had to pull off a disc that someone else had sheared the T25 interface on, I really feel like they could have done well to watch this.

      +Kevin Dudd Cheers Kevin, we think theres a lot of little bits of knowledge within MTB mechanics that need passing on this way because the job seems so simple however it makes a lot of difference to do it the right way.

    Are centre lock disks better than 6 bolt or is it just two different ways of doing the same job

    • @Killershark217
      @Killershark217 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Matthew Laidler Centerlock removes the danger of stripping a bolt's head, also ussualy centerlock hubs are lighter and it uses the same key as a cassete removal tool (some of them).

    • @matthewbradshaw8017
      @matthewbradshaw8017 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Centre locks provide even tension across the whole rotor. If a six bolt rotor isn't tightened properly or if it isn't checked periodically the bolts can work themselves loose and can end pretty badly

      As a former shop mechanic, I watch these to see what they may or may not be doing differently than the way I was trained. Sometimes I see something that makes me slap my head because the way they do it is so much simpler.

    I got new brake pads and they are howling like a wolf pack on a full moon. What's the solution? Should I use some cleaner and degreaser? It might even also be the pads. How could I get those dry?

    • @gmbn
      @gmbn  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Tyler Lovejoy you could clean your rotor, spray it on to a dry cloth and thoroughly clean the rotor. It could be from the heat they have become glazed, why not try some emery paper to take the surface off the pads and rotor? Cheers... Scott

    Anyone else had trouble with very loud squealing Avid Clear Sweep 180 front disc? Well......I changed mine for an Onoff Components 160 with Onoff Components organic pads. I took out that 20mm spacer (obviously). After a few 'emergency stops', et viola, silence is golden! I was worried about under braking at the front end, but no problems so far except that even pressure on both brake leavers occasionally locks up the rear wheel first. So changing a disc could be part of a brake silencing plan after you've tried everything else. New discs should come with pre-coated torx screws.....handy.

      +Oli Taylor I started just over 2 years ago, in my local shop (well, 30 miles) as an unpaid trainee. Now I'm a level 3 mechanic and have contacts all over the place, be that reps from distributors or race team mechanics. It's a small industry, and most people are happy to teach if you're happy to learn. If you show promise, and make an effort to impress, then you'll get on fine

    All the comments about people shearing the T25 bolts. Please don't use cheap torx bits like you get from wilko or b&m. Draper or hilti or better work so much better. The cheap ones are made from cheaper materials and easily chip and don't bite in correctly. That's the experience I've had working with these types of bolts and fixings for 20 years now 😇

    What is the point in replacing brake rotors

    • @gmbn
      @gmbn  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Like everything else they get worn down and loose performance! a 'braking groove' can form meaning that when you replace pads not all f the surface is used effectively

  • @johnmay330
    @johnmay330 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've heard that you shouldn't touch the rotors with your bare hands, otherwise the oils on your fingers will contaminate the rotors, thereby decreasing brake strength and making them noisy.

    • @johnmay330
      @johnmay330 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Global Mountain Bike Network Ah okay. Just curious though, but in my opinion, I think touching the rotors reduces the effectiveness of the brakes itself. Thanks for replying
