Spy Cards - Failed Cards, Archetypes, and Sometimes Mechanics in Yu-Gi-Oh

  • Information is an incredibly strong tool in Yu-Gi-Oh - Knowledge of the meta and the cards that the best decks are playing gives you an edge over other duelists, especially at the competitive level where your skill at evaluating the cards that could be in your opponent’s hand and deck can be the difference between losing a match and winning a YCS.
But knowing is only half the battle - Because while information is important, using cards solely for the purpose of gaining knowledge is at best, unnecessary and a waste of cards, which is why they’re the topic of today’s video exploring why Spy Cards are a redundant part of the modern game, why the info they provide isn’t enough and what cards that allow you to gain knowledge need to do to see any use in the modern era.

I always wanted a "spy" archetype that revolves around changing control of your monsters to your opponents side and activating bad effects to them. Maybe with "spy" counters and then it comes back to your field. Maybe an extra deck boss monster that can be summon if enough of your monster has been switched to your opponents side and back to you enough.

Ancient Telescope and Inexperienced Spy are old cards. I remember I used to think the purpose of those cards was so you could follow-up with a stronger card that requires you to know what cards your opponent has. For example, if you had a card that says "if you guess the name of the top card of your opponent's deck then banish your opponent's entire field face-down" or something. But they never really made a lot of cards that are like that.
And yah I always thought that was the intended use of these recon cards, was to supplement other cards that are good but require you to know things, like "the true name" for example, although they never really followed-up in the way I was expecting them to.
    Lol.

You're forgetting "Exchange", A card I feel should have gotten a mention. Both players get to see what each other has, and each player takes a card respectively from each other's hand. A different kind of "hand-rip" effect where, instead of shuffling a card back into the deck or discarding it, YOU get to use it! It may require setup, but having Exchange in your deck means that you can definitely maneuver this card around to where you get to use your opponent's cards and you can leave them with duds.

In Magic: the Gathering, any cards that do this have to have a good reason to do so. Either to discard a potentially powerful card (Duress) or to gain an advantage afterward (Peek. We don't talk about Gitaxian Probe.). They're also balanced than, let's say, Confiscation and The Forceful Sentry due to having a restricted cost like mana.
In a way, it makes playing them actually worth it, no matter how sparse they can be.
Now that I think about it... Would a card that just sees an opponent's whole deck would help? Or it would still not be enough?

    • @melvinshine9841

I think a card that let you see your opponent's whole deck would still not be worth it if that's all it does. Depending on how centralized the format is, you might already have a good idea of kind of deck you'll be facing already. If you don't have a way to stop or impede what your opponent's going to do, it doesn't matter if you know what's coming.

And as for just normal ranked, you can confirm the opponent's deck list and check to see if it's copy/pasted from player to player. If people were building their decks, there would be some variation.
Again, I know bot accounts exist and that adds to the copy/paste but still. My point is that you never really have to know what the opponent is playing because you can just assume they're always playing the exact same 2-3 decks and, most of the time, your assumption would be correct.

None of them do anything you can't reason out without spending a card, and that's the problem. To be fair though, they're all very early cards. Inexperianced Spy and Ancient Telescope were in the first yugi and kaiba starter decks, back when there were only 3 or so sets in total and spell cards were called "magic".

The first thing you’re not mentioning or considering is when these cards were released. Yeah, the inexperienced spy in today’s format is a horrible card but when it was released, if you can pick out Mirror force, monsters reborn, etc you can get to play around it. I’m not saying that the inexperienced spy is a good card back then, I’m just saying if you’re gonna say worst cards they should be represented in their era not todays where every card is considered horrible/garage

The Continuous Trap, "Truthseeking Eyes", or somert like that, makes your opponent play with their Hand revealed... and gives them 1000 Life Points during their Standby Phase! It's terrific in Nurse Burn as they'll LOSE 1000 Life Points during their Standby Phase, should they have not got rid of their Spell Cards during their Turn, or draw into a new Spell, which, let's face it, they're very likely going to be losing Life Points before their Turn has even begun!

Here's a question that might be relevant. Since the spy cards that are relevant see play because they do other things, are there any cards with spy like effects that see play that would not see play without their spying effect? Like is a spy effect good enough that it can make or break a card? Like just as an example if both discards from delinquent duo were random instead of looking at your opponents hand and picking one. Obviously Delinquent duo would still be good, that's just an example of what I'm talking about.

It'd be cool if there were extra deck monsters that could summon themselves after using one of those cards - like maybe "The Experienced Spy", who could be summoned after the inexperienced spy is used and could steal a card from the opponents hand, or "Master of the Ancient Telescope", who could be summoned after using ancient telescope and could have different possible ways to interact with the top five cards of the opponent's deck depending on what its controller deems to be the most optimal way of dealing with those cards (mill, banish, place at the bottom of the deck, rearrange, etc.). Heck, that might be what red extra deck cards end up being - mons that can be summoned after using, revealing, discarding, etc. one card from your hand 🤷‍♂️

Spy cards are almost never balanced. There's broken cards like dustshoot or forceful sentry, there's worthless cards and then there's inexperienced spy. In general I would say hand knowledge is a +0.5 in card advantage, good but not worth investing a full card on it, which is why card neutral hand knowledge is busted, is a +1 due to removing a card YOU WANT TO GET RID OF.

Spies are less useful if you are playing in a limited format, be it competitive or playground, knowing the environment is more important than some spying.
A follow up point is knowing is half the battle, being able to use that knowledge is important. So a card that spies and then uses that knowledge is better than just getting knowledge. It doesn't matter if you know how your opponent is going to win if you can't stop them.

Conceptual Improved version of Ancient Telescope:
Look at the top 5 cards of your opponents deck, choose any number of those 5 cards to send to the bottom of deck. For each card sent to the bottom of the deck, your opponent gains 1000 life points. Any other cards not sent to the bottom of the deck, the opponent loses 500 Life Points each. This card can only be used once per turn.
