Basenji is a word that means something like "small wild animal from the bush" when translated into English. The Basenji is a member of the Pariah dog family, which includes primitive dogs that lived close to humans but were not fed or cared for. It demonstrates that these dogs are self-sufficient and independent.
    The Basenji's history and origins:
The origins of the dog breed can be traced to Central Africa. The Basenji, commonly known as the African Bush Dog or Congo Dog, is one of the FCI's oldest recognized breeds. The breed, however, remains largely unknown. It's difficult to pinpoint the exact origin of the dog breed, however it's thought to have originated in Egypt. Drawings of this breed of dog have also been discovered inside Egyptian pyramids. In 1870, British researchers in Central Africa discovered the Basenji for the first time. They have been bred as domestic dogs since 1930. Original Basenjis are still used by pygmies in the Central African jungle to help them drive animals into outstretched nets for capture.
    The Basenji's appearance:
According to the F.C.I., males should stand around 43 cm tall, while females should be around 40 cm. The weight ranges from 10 to 12 kilograms. The Basenji lives for 12 to 15 years on average. Their coats are short, dense, fine, and lustrous, and the FCI has authorized the colors black and white, red, brown, white, tan white, solid black, tan, white with tan markings above the eyes, and tan, white with tan markings above the eyes. Basenjis are thin dogs but with a lot of muscle, and they are very athletic.
    The Basenji's nature and personality:
The Basenjis are intelligent and self-reliant. Their distinctive bark is a hybrid of a yodel and howling that is reminiscent of wolf howling.
When the dogs are in their natural surroundings, they are very clean, almost like cats, and have no odor.
Basenjis are calm and balanced, yet they are also incredibly alert and move quickly when distracted.
Basenji training is difficult and should only be attempted by experienced dog handlers. Because they are stubborn, it is critical to establish clear standards, maintain consistency, and show them who is in authority. When it comes to strangers, they are rather reserved.
    Basenji's Exercise and Grooming:
The dogs have a natural hunting instinct as well as a high demand for daily activity and challenges. Basenjis are tough, healthy dogs who are only impacted by genetic disorders such urinary tract infections or gastrointestinal difficulties on rare occasions. Brushing isn't necessary because basenjis lose almost no hair. Allergy sufferers will like the dog. In the winter, owners should keep in mind that Basenjis are quite sensitive to the cold and should wear an extra coat.

I have so many things to say about Basenji, I have girl (2,5 years), main points, shortly. She is cute but very stubborn, hates raining weather. Super hype. Needs to run with other dogs off leash every day, even 3 hours walk on leash is not enough to keep her satisfied. This is very challenging in the city. So my understanding that they WILD in all meaning of this. E.g., if any other breeds see a car - don’t pay attention, Basenjis are impressed in the city by everything, looks like a girl from countryside came for the 1st time to NY, it takes longer to adapt to city stuff (transport, crowdy) you need to keep your attention on them all the time, no time to drink coffee or scroll your phone while you are walking with Basenji ) At home (in case she got her walking running time) she like a cat, very clean and soft, is not destroying things as other dogs can do, so even shoes or whatever mine on the floor is ok, it surprised me, because i thought if they hyper - at home it will be mess.

We adopted a male from someone who couldn’t take care of him - college student who had to keep him in a crate all day in an apartment - she said he was a shepherd mix - I didn’t know any better and he was friendly so we took him home. He had been in and out of shelters for his entire first year (poor guy) so he had MAJOR separation anxiety immediately - couldn’t walk out of his site without him whining *a lot* And we have cats - we literally had to keep him on a leash in the house until we had a trainer come to our house - she broke him of chasing them very quickly - we thought he was just really hyper and had no idea what breed he was - I read that these dogs are either readily recognized or people have no idea what they are. He LOVES his winter jacket and needs to stay warm - it’s la security blanket and calms him down - we thought he would hate it! He loves rolling in tall weeds and grass and digs his feet proudly after every bush he marks. I walk him twice a day and he’s still hyper. I do little things to make him “think” - I grab a treat, turn my back, circle my hands in a big motion, turn around and have him pick which hand has the treat - he gets SO excited he goes up on his hind legs. Always know when we pass a male dog on the walk because he gets growly.

How hyper is he on a dog scale of 1-10? (Compared to other dogs you may know) Does he bark when you leave/notice him making lots of noise when arriving? The separation anxiety thing seems to haunt me with every dog I've owned. Mainly my bigger breeds.

@@yehyehyehyehyeh6847 compared to other dogs I’ve had he’s a 10 - it’s a whole new level of needing activity but it’s not surprising when you realize they are sight and smell hunters - so the stubbornness of a Basset Hound smelling something with the speed of lightening when they see something, like a squirrel. It’s a nightmare when he gets out when the a garage door is accidentally opened before we have his leash secure - once there were a whole group of parents outside my house, in the yard and street, trying to help catch him - he’’d get really close to taking a treat so I could grab his collar but he’d dart off, changing his mind. The absolute worst is being 2 houses in from a main residential street because he thinks cars are things to be chased - thank goodness he didn’t get hit or I would never forgive myself. He must be around 5 and we’re hoping he’ll mellow (which he does after a walk or tossing toys in the back yard). If he’s not distracted he will whine when we leave and look out the bedroom window to our car, but I always give him something to divert his attention, like peanut butter in a Kong, or half a Nubz bone (easy to snap in half). He’s very animated when we get home and stands on his back legs and lifts his paws in the air like a little dance - we also become animated and say “Bam Bam!” (nickname for Boomer because I can’t call my pets by their actual names for some reason) and clap our hands all excited. My husband says “Give me my pupple hugs Bammy!” He’s got a sweet soul and wants to please us he just loses control sometimes and chases the cats where they can’t get away from him trying to play. That’s weird about large breeds - I wonder if it’s because they’re so attached to their people and just feel lost without them.

@@yehyehyehyehyeh6847 Hey! I own 22 basenjis and can give you advice! They dont bark! They yodel when happy or howl as a pack! And depending on the breeding until they hit around 10-20 years old, they are around a 7 in hyperactive. Then they slow down to a 5. Then slowly a 3-0. I recommend socializing at a YOUNG age and crate trainibg at a young age. NEVER LEAVE YOUR BASENJI UNSUPERVISED ALONE IN THE HOUSE OR YOU WONT COME BACK TO ONE! They love attention! But seperation anxiety is something ive never had due to crate training. I also recommend buying 2 if you leave the house alot, or 1 if you stay home alot.

Haha. Love watching things about my dogs! I have 22 basenjis who run this house. They have a mindset like they are dominant, then they get their asses kicked by another dog. And it really depends on the breeders dogs on their shedding and scent. Some have longer hair meaning its harder for them to clean and that also means the dog can clean it or take out the dead hair making more hair die and soon every clean thing will have a hair on it. Even your washed clothes. They do learn how to bark. By starting a howl/baroo (what we basenji people call it) the stopping shortly after. If you do not socialize as a puppy or dog dog show like i do, they become attached to one person and with be very dog aggressive. (All my dogs have a buddy or is alone due to being well.... basenjis) And the age can go up to 20 years old. Like the video said, they rarely have any health problems, if bred right and properly cared for, this is true! I have many scars from basenjis trying to be dominant, they get it in the end. They arent just sensitive to the cold! They are like little baby girls, they will pout 😡 and shout, and do anything for well... anything. There origin is in Africa they were used to chase small game onto a net, they wore cow bells to be easily found, and they only major differences is the tail and weight of the original dog and domesticated dog. And their size. It is 20 INCHES NOT CENTIMETERS! For Gods sake, a chihuahua is like that! Amyways hope this helps new owners and if any old owners can agree, leave a like or comment!

The one we just got seems a bit aloof. But she also was a surrender and still might be stressed. She seems very needy with my husband which makes sense since her past owner was a male. We are hoping she will make a nice family dog for us. She is already 11 snd has been at a shelter for two months. We have other pets, but she seems to be adapting well. I was worried with my cat, but she doesn’t seem to have any interest in her. She is a little overweight though 😂 poor girl. Never heard of this breed before! 🐕

No dog odour no barking they were taken back to Egypt and became Palace dogs. I suggest you do more study into our breed before installing your info video on TH-cam!!! Inaccurate in many ways!
