Hey Matt would you be interested in doing a upper body gym workout that you would have done as a 13,14,15,16 year old when you were trying to build muscle. Love your vids and keep up the great work
Andrew I did I’m still 14 but when I was 12 I went to gym at least 2 times a week and I ate more veggies and 2 years later I Barely Have a six pack and I play football every day literally I play 3 hours minimum per day since I was 5 My biggest problem is my weakfoot but good players like Rivaldo and Robben, Salah know how to play with a weakfoot but you can’t play as a 6ft 3in striker with a weakfoot
I lived in Refugee Camp in Syria from 1988 until 1999, all those years I played soccer but no good nutrient no without, no gym just play futball everyday, when I moved to USA in 1999 I played for higher school and some college but I was missing the big pieces to the buzzle which all the ones you mentioned. Today I really enjoyed learning from this video to try teach my 4 years old son and make him a better player hopefully. Much appreciate it
Doing a lot more ball mastery and being more technical is something I wish I focused on more as a kid, the players from countries like Brazil and Argentina spent all day playing small spaced games and always having a ball at their feet, and it really shows with the amount of skill they have now
When he was talking about his neighbors and friends not being big on soccer and only practicing with his brother I felt that!! It's always basketball or something lol.
You forgot the exercise Ronaldinho and Messi were doing when they were kids.... Dribbling across their house! they literally dribbled past the chairs, the tables, their moms, their walls, etc....I did that and I ended up being more comfortable and accurate with my dribbling abilities on the pitch. And also I would say that in those 4v4 or 5v5 you should try to play with maximum two touches -> increasing the vision, the positioning, the ball control, the decision making and the essential one touch passes ability.
Can you come to my club and rattle their cage a bit? I'm a volunteer parent coach...we just started some basic sessions last week to get the kids out, and the drills were no different than what I did in 1987. I asked our trainers about rondos...they had no idea what I was talking about. This is perhaps the best training video you've put out. I played travel/select in the 80s, and everything you say is spot on. Aside from exposure to the first wave of Coerver coaches to hit the US, which did help me immensely, I also wish I could have done more (much more) of these activities that you list. I ended up being a good 1v1 player who could juggle the ball a 1,000 times, but never developed that intuitive sense and quick thinking that rondos, futsal, two-touch juggling etc. would have fostered. It saddens me in a way that you, who are almost 20 years younger than me, experienced many of the same limitations that I did. Nobody in the neighborhood to play soccer with informally, and too many coaches emphasizing the wrong things. No wonder we struggle a bit in the US in producing world class male players...our grassroots is still systematically flawed. I still play in my mid 40s, and as the athleticism and fitness inevitably erodes with age, you need to rely increasingly on your skills and positional sense. Most of the guys my age and older who can still contribute grew up outside of the US, and it is all due to the fact that they are so comfortable with the ball and know where to be at all times. Pass to them, and they will know what to do with the ball. Make a good run, and they will find you.
Having people to play with as a kid is tough to find in America. Recently I’ve been driving 45 minutes a day just to play small sided and rondos with other good players ⚡️
Become Elite I cannot thank you enough for all you’ve done for me. You might not know it, but you are inspiring thousands of kids across the country. You are the only reason why I am literally addicted to this sport so I thank you for that. Not many soccer players have the kindness to take the time and upload videos regarding their life and how to get better. You truly love to help others and your videos show that. Once again thank you so much
Wall ball #1…you can do it anywhere and tons of touches. As an elite American player in the 80’s, I had difficulty finding players who wanted to play daily. Free Play #2…no pressure, super fun and a catalyst for creativity.I didn’t find futsal until my mid 40’s. That’s a blast. IMO..great content.
Great info and one I will share with my kids. I agree with you 100%. I have been coaching now for about 22 years, and from the beginning I saw coaching styles of many other coaches, many still had that old school mentality of conditioning and doing many warm up, stretches and other drills without the ball. I came up in that school, and truly as a teenage I hated just running, so since my early coaching start, I began to incorporate the ball to all aspects of the game: from warm ups, stretches, sprints, long distance jogs (labs), to mental and strategical games (tic-tac-toe, soccer chinese checkers, soccer-bowling, duck - duck - goose, etc.... many which I have made up from regular kids games. The goal is to work on all aspects of the athlete and to work on vision, first/second touch, positioning, motor skills, and physical aspects of the game. For a kid needs to practice, exercise and play as much with the ball and feel comfortable with it, in all pressure and non-pressure situations. As part of my teaching philosophy I created a curriculum " StartSmart + StartRight = Play SmartSoccerRight!" which incorporates all the topics/ workouts you discussed. Thank you for sharing your experience.
I have been following Matt since his Germany days. He has been a constant motivation for me. Now Matt has inspired me to start my own TH-cam channel. Im civil engineering student and a semi pro here in India.
I use to play a lot as a kid too and i only had my brother to play pass the ball around, thinking of getting back into soccer. Thank you for this video, very insightful (:
Lately I have been doubting myself because I was offered a spot in an academy team when i was 12, i declined because i was scared and didn't think too much of it, i am now 16 and i have been doubting myself a lot. I keep thinking "Oh wow now its too late, i should've accepted that offer" but you just gave me a ton of hope dude. Thanks my g - love from New Zealand :)

This video is a real inspiration and life-saver for me. I was training, just trying to get better at ball mastery and the session didn't go too well. I was so disappointed, sulking on my chair just looking at the odds of me not making it to the pro level and just giving up even though there was a side of me telling me to believe in myself. Eventually, I read your Reddit chat and my oh my was I motivated. I got up and tried the drill I failed at one more time, this time with music and I nailed it. Because of that training session, I came to this video and it really enlightened my perspective on what to prove in my game. Thank you so much✊🏾
The WALL is a players best friend! Just kinda realized now that I started making training videos. Literally just posted about it..😆. Valuable video Matt. Well done 👍🏼
Hey Matt! I'm 15 (high school freshman) and I fell in love with soccer last year. I have been working super hard training, and I have seen a HUGE improvement. I was wondering if there is any chance of me going pro since I'm starting late compared to most pro soccer players. If you have any tips I would be very grateful! Thank you! Edit: Thank you all so much for the encouragement! You all have truly help motivate me to become the best version of myself!
Imagine start playing soccer at the age of like 17? And then the next year be the best player in the world. I’m talking All the trophies you could possibly get!!! That would just be mind blowing!!!
Just wanted to say how much I can relate to your background. I grew up in a small farm town in the late 80s through the 90s and I was one of two kids who really had an interest in soccer. We had parents as coaches up until high school and even then we couldn't keep the decent coaches longer than a year before they went on to bigger and better things. I am truly inspired by everything you've been able to accomplish. If you're ever able to go back in time, look up my child self too and set him straight.
Rondos , wall passing and two touch passing are key things that helped me! Only hard part is finding another player. And if you do find another player don’t let them give you simple balls that arch in two touch. Direct balls to help you learn to kill the ball and still have control! It will help you a lot in the long run !
man you really have your self analysis dialed in. I've been watching your stuff for a few years now and always knew you had the beastmode mentality, ethic and passion for the game, which reflected in your physical abilities on the pitch (barring the bad injury etc), except that instinctive advanced-level fundamental soccer shit just honed into your core wasn't there and I've seen it in your footage but honestly see it at USMNT writ large. And I think what happened to you in regards to being reared as an aspiring American soccer guy is a similar experience to so many of us American kids. A lot of us played rec soccer but very few of us ever played the game at or after school. Like ever. I know exactly what you mean when you talk about this and I think this is incredibly important information that you could share with American soccer associates/coaches/whatever. Americans do not understand soccer on a fundamental philisophical level nor even an advanced technical level, i mean really... We shoot PK'S and practice rainbows growing up but we sure as hell could not articulate the pros and cons of a 4-3-3 or for that matter execute these incredibly important drills/techniques bc we were weaving in and out of cones and running ladders or something. lol. Like, I literally said, "I bet he says Rondo in there somewhere" and it was literally the first thing. I AM NOT SURPRISED! It is our shared American experience. Your articulation of some of these matters indicates to me that you have a good future in football on and/or off the pitch if you choose. Sounds like you should just rondo your balls off and work on all of these things more then other parts of the game on a personal level. Just my opinion. Probably what you're already doing, obviously. You've achieved a lot and I wish you happiness and success my dude, you are doing going things for soccer in America regardless of your personal accomplishments, of which there are many to be proud of. I hope to coach one day and I would want the kids to understand these things you have described, amongst other things you've brought up on this channel. I would want them to understand what their role is in the context of the formation that actually suits their talents and abilities vs. just a placing of people in positions to play the equivalent of soccer atonal jazz solos for 90min. Anyhow, keep pluggin away dude, wish you well.
These videos help me so much ! Thank you ! I've been subscribed for about a year now and I've learnt so much off you. I've noticed my improvement after I watched myself do a drill a year ago and I swear I wasn't that bad 🤣 I hope you see this to show you these videos are 100% worth doing. Again THANK YOU !
Can you do a video/ 2 minute Tuesday on how you did the circle around you w/o having to stop the video like you did on your 2019 season highlight video?
Wall Passing really helped me a lot this quarantine. I did it almost everyday especially on my weak foot. Now I am more confident in using my left foot when playing.
Great insight on various underappreciated and underemphasized areas of the game. esp like points on next level passing accuracy and medium range passing
Coming from a country where football is the most popular game, these training were very common and were things we did all the time. I didnt think they were that important
I would 100% agree with what you mean about playing rondos and futsal etc, children nowadays over complicate things by doing drills when the best thing you could do is play with your friends,1 2 touch, rondos
yo matt i love your vids i wish you can come too Florida i would love to train with you its so hard to find the perfect drills to do and i love how good you are with the ball and i wanna get more fit and be better at ball handling
This is everything I wished I did when I started out as well. I learnt over the years from trial and error and like you the higher the level I got to the more I realised what I needed to work on playing along side teammates who were better than me at it.
i’m american too but my family is Haitian and the area we were in was Haitian and hispanic everywhere and football was really popular around us, like you would see use passing a football on the sidewalk and when the world cup comes there’s a party at someone’s home. i’m glad i got to grow up around the sport...
I love everything you said and touched on i too grew up in the county in Baltimore and noone played soccer we all played football or basketball. I am a coach now and it would of helped me throughout my life coaching or helping my daughters. But you are right on.
Loved this idea! Thanks to your channel and some others I already do most of these often but can never train these fundamentals too much. Keep up the amazing work.
Thank you for the video and as a player and now a coach I focus a lot in what you are describing with my kids U12 Fitness with the ball, running with the ball, fitness without a ball and small games with other players.
Mate I appreciate your advice, I appreciate that you make great high quality videos for us to learn from. As a aspiring footballer you have helped me a lot.
Can you make a video on in depth crossing. I know you had a tutorial on crossing way back but It would be nice doing a crossing video similar to your video regarding different types of long ball.
Interesting to see your list. A lot of those drills you list are ones, at least in my experience in Scotland, that are done just about every session and in the warm up. I didn’t even know rondo’s had a name. When the coach shouted “grab the baw” that’s what we did 😂
Connect the ball with the laces, side footed, just as a power shot. The height depends on where you strike the ball. Aim for the center or slightly below Center for some height. And keep head above ball, don’t lean back too much as that adds height as well.
Great video, thanks for the incredibly useful information, being 16 who has never played club or an academy, I know what I can work on. Keep pushing out these bangers
hey man i know my acc is nba but i play rep soccer so i know a fair bit about this, if u have spare time and your aloud to go for a run, road run, run box to box on a field or what you prefer. long distance running start slow and build up till you feel like your at a game speed and see how long you can go for. when you play a match make sure you run until you can’t run anymore because this helps you with developing game speed for longer times and distances, good luck in the future my man

Thanks Matt it really helped me 💯
I love everything you said and touched on i too grew up in the county in Baltimore and noone played soccer we all played football or basketball. I am a coach now and it would of helped me throughout my life coaching or helping my daughters. But you are right on.
Great Video!!! Super helpful info! Thanks Matt!
One of your best vids loved it
Great video man, really enjoyed it ! I would definitely agree with you on the mid distance driven pass very important the higher you go up !
Yessss Matt i love you (no homo) and your content!!!
Loved this idea! Thanks to your channel and some others I already do most of these often but can never train these fundamentals too much. Keep up the amazing work.
On it! Thanks so much! Love your vids!
It’s dope to see the production value go up
great video! very clear and concise.
Thankyou Matt, your advice goes a long way with my 11 year old son, and you've added a ton of knowledge for our training sessions 👍
Can you make a video on in depth crossing. I know you had a tutorial on crossing way back but It would be nice doing a crossing video similar to your video regarding different types of long ball.
The 5 side hit different been doing that everyday such a fun part of soccer that is needed.
Interesting to see your list. A lot of those drills you list are ones, at least in my experience in Scotland, that are done just about every session and in the warm up. I didn’t even know rondo’s had a name. When the coach shouted “grab the baw” that’s what we did 😂
Can you do a vid on how to learn to do a good low driven pass?
Connect the ball with the laces, side footed, just as a power shot. The height depends on where you strike the ball. Aim for the center or slightly below Center for some height. And keep head above ball, don’t lean back too much as that adds height as well.
Great video, thanks for the incredibly useful information, being 16 who has never played club or an academy, I know what I can work on. Keep pushing out these bangers
he deserves 50 million subs he is my favorite youtuber honestly i want to be just like him he is just amazing at soccer
Thank you Matt ❤️🙏
Could you please make a video on how to play for a longer time without getting tired??
hey man i know my acc is nba but i play rep soccer so i know a fair bit about this, if u have spare time and your aloud to go for a run, road run, run box to box on a field or what you prefer. long distance running start slow and build up till you feel like your at a game speed and see how long you can go for. when you play a match make sure you run until you can’t run anymore because this helps you with developing game speed for longer times and distances, good luck in the future my man
@@yaboibryce3717 thanks a lot man. Would do my very best 👍
