Now at this point I don't have many like-minded people around me⚽, but it's partially because watching your videos slowly changed my mindset and thinking and I'm grateful🤍 this video really opened my eyes not just about me and football.. "Would my 50yr me be proud of the current me?" Thanks Matt and wish you good luck 🍀💪
Love the 50 yr old theory. I just turned 50 this summer! Lol. Firstly, you won't look that old at 50, trust me. I'm still not gray yet. For me personally, I'd love to tell my 19 yr old self to take college soccer much more seriously than I was at the time. Though I wasn't a highly nationally recruited player out of NY, I did end up at D1 St. Johns University in a rebuilding year in 1991 as a freshman. By 1996 we had won the National championship but I had quit the game 2 years prior. Why? I got little playing time as a fresh/soph - which was difficult to swallow considering I started every game in high school and for my club team which was always making state cups/regionals, so I felt I "deserved" to play more. But the biggest thing was when I quit the college game in 1993 there was no real viable pro league in America. MLS wasn't even spoken of yet. So basically, to me, I had gone as far as I thought I could which was pretty good...D1 college. There was also no real aspirations of playing in Europe even in lower level leagues. It just didn't happen back then. Turns out MLS forms in 1996, some of my former friends/teammates over the years kept at it and linked up with a team or got a try out or were drafted (ex: Chris Armas) and ended up having gotten a shot at pro soccer. I didn't regret my decision back in those days since I was making good money with my degree in Manhattan doing the corporate thing and MLS was paying peanuts, but nowadays, to your point at 50 years old, you think of "what if."
Love the imagining the 50 year old version of you. One thing I do is sit down and in writing explain to myself 5 years ago where I am now. Makes me realize how far I’ve come and to imagine where I could possibly be in the next 5 years

You’re an absolute inspiration @Matt Sheldon. I just want to say that I’ve come a long way in my football career and a lot of it has been thanks to you. *I’m currently trialling for my first professional club in the UAE 3rd Division in hope of a professional contract. I’ll let you know how it goes in a month*
Hey, I'm a youth footballer in the UAE(Abudhabi) and was just curious as to which club you're trialing with/how you found the opportunity. Best of luck for your trial :)
Always speaking from the heart, always speaking from life experience. That's why you cannot be copied, that's why you're unique. Great stuff as always Matt.
Two minute Tuesday on a Sunday? Hmm interesting! Also I’m really sorry you were sent off yesterday. I watched that video and it was absolutely not a misconduct, especially not a sending off!! I hope the club appeals the red card to the league because that needs to be rescinded.
Habit #2 is something that I need to do, and a great lesson for the lot of us. I’m not in college yet, but my family is pretty un-athletic and are slothful with watching tv or just sitting around on there phones for most of the day. I am trying to kinda carry the train up the mountain in a sense that I want to get them to a higher level while developing a champion mentality in an environment that doesn’t really care about it. We all need to find those 4-5 people that can carry us to that next level and really push ourselves and develop a great mentality. I don’t know what was more inspiring in this video than the fact that every team mate Matt trained with consistently went pro.
Would love more detail Matt on Soccer Journal-- love that idea for my son (U10 top level player in metro PDX)-- also any resources of annotated or websites for watching Premier or other elite soccer with coaching points or highlighted ? (best juice out of the squeeze to watch a game... many matches have a lot of "down time" and it would be great to have edited footage that's commented on key points of tactical or strategic learning points esp for developing players.
I really liked your final point of imagining your future self and how he would see you. I’ve done something similar where I imagine my younger self and how proud he’d be of how far I’ve come, but also how disappointed he would be to see me quit. It helps in both building me up in good times and also pushing me to keep going when I’m at a low point. I’m definitely going to try this “50 year old me” technique, great video!
Wow. Our oldest son is 11 years old and almost exactly does what Matt you are talking here when you did at 11 years and 12 years. I will have him see this and start following your guidance here. Thanks!
Thnx man actually today I got rejected by a school for getting admission & actually that school has one of best football teams & management in whole city but due to average marks I got turned down & I was feeling devastated but still as the day progressed I brought my focus into other things to bring my mind out of the rejection but now after watching your video, I realized that 50 years old me wouldn't even remember that I was turned down by a school when I was 15.. 😂😅😁
What a great video! How committed to excellence you are has always inspired me. I remember those days leading up to Waterside Karori and how challenging of a time that was. All the best brother!❤️💯
I have a few friends that are like minded in ⚽️ but I want to have training sessions with 5-6 people instead of me or 1 other person what do you recommend to meet more focused and like minded people?
Q&A: Is it one of your goals to move to the MLS or other top league’s? Tell us more about your goal and what you want to achieve in your career, thanks.
Matt I have osgood schlatters right now and in pre season I’m trying to balance getting fit and looking after my knee so I’m just doing team training and then gym (not using legs) any advice on what to do?
Yo, you are a very trustworthy person, but I gotta ask, do you think zth training is a legit way, or should I try to enroll my brother via another way?
Hey Matt I have a question about the journaling and reading. Has that helped you in your development as a player? Because for me I feel it hasn’t done anything and I don’t think it’s really my thing but a lot of people and coaches that I’ve met have said try reading or journaling more. What should I do?
In the short term, it will seem to do nothing. At best it’s just a therapy session with yourself. But long term, it’s amazing. It’s so rewarding to flip back and read about how 8 years ago my goal was to just even get invited to train with a USL team. It’s rewarding and motivating to read your highs and lows and take a step back to take a look at your career as a whole. You journal for your future self, not for your current one.
Use an at least every now and then to keep the word minimum at a minimum. Great work my family follows all your stuff and my son @rising_owen really practices your content!
Thank you very much Sir. The truth is I am facing problems because of my foot and I can’t play very much well because I raised a disease called (Mortons neuroma) and I think that after seeing your video I will try my best to comeback and someday when I will make it pro I will come back to this comment.

Of course. If a 2nd division player doesn’t have ambitions to play in the 1st division then they should just retire.
