Jacob is taking a much more minimalist approach to the songwriting here and it's working very well for him-- he's obviously a master of his craft but I think that he has struggled to make songs that really hit emotionally because of how harmonically complex and alienating they are.
This song is the best of both worlds; there are some incredibly interesting harmonies but the majority of the song is just simple and perfectly executed. I love this

"In every soul is the need to grow older, to speed up the passing of time. I don't know why, but it makes me cry."
In a video on some social media platform, Jacob briefly mentions the insignificance of being alive (in what I am assuming is a reference to our current understanding of the Universe and our finite place within) and embracing each moment because your 'life' has no more significance at the end than it does in the beginning. That sentiment spoke to me on a fundamental level and the previously mentioned lyrics only amplify his philosophy.

In every sea there's a mouth of a river
    Where waterfall riches flow down
    Why do they cry
    No-one knows why
And in every mouth there's a word of forgiveness
That melts all the ice to the ground
    Why do you sigh
    I don't know why
Why does the sky fall down like pouring rain
    To let it flow again
    (Gonna make you feel alright
Take your dreams, keep them out of sight
    Wanna make you come alive
Close your eyes, keep you overnight)
So come a little closer to me
So many things I want you to see
    My darling
In every laugh is the sorrow
Of all of the tears that you've held for so long
    But you make my cry
    Oh let me run dry
In every tear are the eyes of a father
And mother that brought you to sea
    Sing lullaby
    As you say goodnight
Why do the stars look down and feel no shame
    They are all the same
    (Gonna set your mind alive
Keep you close to me and hold you tight
    Wanna keep you burning bright
Take your words, shine them like a light)
So come a little closer to me
So many things I want you to see

I would be willing to handle the philosophy/ethics portion, which would start off elementary - Golden Rule, Categorical Imperative, Original Position (Rawls) - and graduate to some foundational topics I would rely more on expert guests to cover - social and environmental justice, economics - moving then onto "core" philosophies of free will skepticism, modern physics, computer science, world religions, etc.
I believe we could infuse each topic with a related musical theme, and I would need to rely on someone much more expert there too. Again, I nominate Jacob the master.

It feels insufficient to say I love this song. I love it more than I can say in words because it pushes into a part of me words don't reach; it converses and resonates in a wholly different language. It moves me as though, despite my loss for words or explanation, I have suddenly understood everything. It tells me what I cannot possibly know, but am certain we all know. With strokes of care and aliveness, it softly invokes the universal.
I am still not doing it justice, simply can't conjure praise with any precision. I can't claim to speak this song's language, but I have somehow still heard it, and more than I could ever articulate, felt it. And that is the language that runs beneath all other languages.
This song, somehow, saw my heart. I will never be independent of it now that I have experienced and continue to experience its gentle wonder in seismic revolutions. Beyond humbling to have something this intimate in a public sphere 😭

I do not (yet?) feel the same way about this song, but it makes me want to listen some more times to see if I can figure out what moved you so intensively about it. And if I don't that is also fine. • @elea5668
      @elea5668 5 ปีที่แล้ว +34

I was looking for a comment about the filming ! It's so magical how it really feels like a subjective point of view !
Every move of the camera is somehow curved (imagine doing a wide panoramic shot with your eyes, but not moving your body, so you turn your head from left to right, and you end up with a slightly curved shot), so is the image (kind of stretchted and curved at the same time, mimicking the human eye), and even when the camera is not moving there is a rocking movement going on so it feels like this is a real person watching. Plus, the fact that all of this happens with the frame and the image (the stretching and curving of the image) makes it feel like YOU are the person floating around and looking at all of this!
But I am sorry I don't know what are the means used to make this video, I'm just a student in drama and film; and I wanted to share my very excited feelings about the video with someone (we could even start talking about a short film at his point I think, because you can make 2 minutes-long short-films, I have been an extra on a few of those). But I'm sure there is a lot of editing done (as well as a special camera), so many effects may have been done in post-production.
(Also, I'm sorry, I'm french, and I'm too lazy to re-read what I just wrote to check for misspelled words and syntactic errors [and I don't have the time to do so, because I signed a "working contract" today so I'm going to celebrate with my friends !])
Have a nive evening, night, day, afternoon depending on your location !
      [JUST A QUICK EDIT ! I have a guess, maybe it's too extravagant, but I'll try !
You know how in the opening scene of the The Social Network, the film about Mark Zuckeberg, there is a shot of him running down a street (in the opening scene, during the opening credits) in a very long uninterrupted pan shot, well, the director likes complicated things, and there is a building where the camera is supposed to be, so it's not possible to use a crane to shoot it. So he installed cameras on the front of the building and all the images they made created a super wide image. From this image he recreated the movement of a pan shot not moving through space but through images.
What I mean is that maybe, I don't even know if that's possible, but maybe the video was made by using several cameras standing still (to recreate the 360 feel), they synchronized the films and they created the movement afterwards in post-production, which would also make it handy to have several Jacob Collier in different outfits and different places (because the camera wasn't moving you can superimpose the images more easily.)
Could someone who knows something about film making please tell me if that would be possible ?
The shot I'm talking about starts at 21sec and ends at 54sec of this video th-cam.com/video/xXdFJggkjzM/w-d-xo.html ]

A professional 360 camera set up would be overkill in my opinion. This can be done with one camera, since it is mostly editing.

      @Jarnagua 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

My guess is 2d compositing in 3D space with simulated camera moves synchronized with occasional practical camera movement. It's very clever. They spent a lot of time planning these shots. I love it.
