    Unbelievable performance. Jacob freely improvises with a level of excellence that is astounding

    That moment at 5:30 when Jacob plays dissonant notes to create an uneasy feeling in the audience, only to make them wait an extra second before playing the resolving notes which makes everyone laugh in relief.. so playful, so good.

    I can’t wait for him to mature and ripen. He is already so mindblowingly amazing, it is unfathomable what he will be like in 20 30 years. I can hear that he still has some of that young raw and unpolished talent and over the years that will consolidate into something very beautiful. The journey of an artist is outward, first you just want to sing 1 note, then phrases, then songs, then concerts, tour etc. But at some point you reach a level of maturity where you will wonder “why” more and more until you are back at playing 1 note and asking yourself “why? Why make any music at all?” and that is the point where your artistry will really condens.
    It is amazing that we get to see and hear this. I can totally see him formulating some historic music theory at later ages or maybe be a fundamental pillar that will steer music in a new direction for centuries to come.
    He is such a unique multi dimensional virtuoso. In each one of the disciplines he would be considered world class. Amazing singer, amazing pianist, amazing hearing, amazing musical knowledge, amazing stage presence, amazing compositional skills, amazing production skills. And he is barely 20 years old. I hope he never loses the passion.

      He was 26 at the time of your comment. That's not really "barely 20", but overall I agree with you.

      I feel that a part of musical maturity is cyclical. Yes you get more “tasteful” in you’re musical choices, but you also become more and more of child. I think Jacob’s childlikeness is what makes unmistakably him. Never settling, never compromising, ever evolving.

    Thanks for recording and sharing this! - JC is one of those artists who's live performances are so far from the recorded albums - and vary in the moment - like Corea maybe and the top jazzers - that bootlegs really *are* needed to keep a record - and capture where he's "at".

      It's quite simple. In this version there is so much going on that it looses the intimate beauty of the version from Mahagony session. Sometimes less is more.

    I hate when audiences scream through the performance. The fact that you enjoy it, doesn't mean you can become part of it by talking or yelling. Shut up and listen.
    Awesome performance though

    • @peterwaters4119
      @peterwaters4119 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      awesome indeed and as a performer myself, I agree with you... However, this audience is hanging on every note, they're really hearing it, it's an incredibly informed and well- educated audience, always reacting in the right places, the most magic moments. I generally agree with you Dennisvdt but I would have loved playing for this particular audience, even though no-one, me included, can play as incredibly as this genius, he's conversing with the stars

    • @williamcarrmusic
      @williamcarrmusic 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@peterwaters4119 Yeah knowing the crowd and DC culture, they aren't theory heads. They're churchgoers and RnB music lovers who know what the "soulful" sounds of music sound like and they chase after that feel. The problem is they anticipate those moments way too much and they always have to let someone know that they hear you. lol. You'd like it at first but it'll get annoying.

    • @gregonline6506
      @gregonline6506 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It’s called interacting. And they do it in an adequate language: sound.

    • @jeremiahnoar7504
      @jeremiahnoar7504 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As a performer, as have to disagree. That’s exactly how we can tell what really works and what doesn’t.

    • @superthijsss
      @superthijsss 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No one in the audience wants to hear someone else’s screaming or words or whatever sound that prevents you from staying in this beautiful zone that Jacob gets you in. A gentle sigh would be in it’s place, but no talking during silent ballads!

  • @philiplord2818
    @philiplord2818 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I would be annoyed that people in the audience feel the need to say something and interrupt the music rather than just listerning. Why does it have to become about them and what they are feeling. FFS

    • @jeremiahnoar7504
      @jeremiahnoar7504 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It’s about Jacob, and it’s also about them. That’s art. The idea, is that Jacob can receive useful feedback in real time about what works and what doesn’t. Actually there’s a number of reasons why the audience “interruptions” are good and even necessary for the experience but that, I think, is the most fundamentally practical reason for it.

    • @ChristopherWoods
      @ChristopherWoods 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Being an audience member at a JC concert has always been a little like that. Rapt attention, full engagement, respect for the setting but a playful kind of interaction. He does things knowing they'll elicit a reaction, and sometimes the music just moves you at such a fundamental level you can't help but express it. It's the best kind of jazz.
