My first comment on TH-cam ever... just couldn't keep myself quiet any longer. This performance is just unbelievable, beautiful, passionate, powerful... breathtaking. I would like to say more but unfortunately there are no appropriate words in this world. And yes, I am an organist.
As a violinist, I have always been fascinated by the organ. Correct me if I'm wrong, but is playing the organ, especially a piece like Toccata and Fugue in D minor, like playing 3 or 4 instruments all at once? It's just something I've heard and I wanted to know if it was true.
@@dominickbenincasa5043 Pieces on the organ usually have multiple melodies (on different octaves) so violin players usually either play the resonant melody or a combination by playing on two strings. Listen to little fugue by JS Bach and you'll understand it much better.
This performance is quite a compelling argument for the "violin solo transcribed for organ" theory of this piece. Everything fits so well - especially the arpeggios.
+Karlfalcon Lol there is no such credible theory, only blue-sky speculation. If Bach wrote this first for violin actual fragments would likely have showed up in the partitas or elsewhere.
It needs a certain amount of courage and self-control to deal, with a solo instrument, with this masterpiece of organ and polyphonic music. The job was just impossible to do. Came a man, who didn't know that - and did it. Congratulations.
The Toccata and Fugue is considered by some to be originally a violin piece (see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toccata_and_Fugue_in_D_minor,_BWV_565#Anterior_version_hypothesis_and_reconstructions). Playing it on a violin is therefore not as outlandish at it would seem at first.
I didn't know the violin hypothesis. It could work. Even in the case the piece was "originally" intended for violin, the version that has gone through the ages up to us is not intended for that instrument : it is an organ piece. It is not written for a solo violin, but for an organ.
anyone who has seen the score knows the organ version is a transcription. given the number of solo string partitas put out by the bachs (including anna magdalena ) this strikes me as the most viable candidate for the original source. the organ score was not written by bach (and it's not remotely written as a Baroque score; it is quite likely notated by someone who heard the maestro - a flashy extemporizer - perform it in the way we are used to hearing it today.
It is fairly widely believed to have been originally intended to be played on violin and is fairly simple for that instrument to play... but this dude still rocked it! Personally I prefer it on violin. Not that anyone asked.
There is actually a serious theory among musicologists that the work WAS originally written for violin, and that the organ piece was Bach's organ transcription of this [now lost] work. There is at least one known example in Bach's oeuvre: the fugue in D minor, BWV 539, is an organ transcription of a violin original (the 2nd movement of Sonata in G minor for solo violin, BWV 1001; that one Bach also transcribed for lute/guitar as BWV 1000). Of course, the violin version is no longer in D minor but in A minor - a matter of accommodating the range of the instrument. It's playable in D minor on a viola.
It may be that some of these expression are due to some rather sour intonation on some of the double stops. I can't blame the performer much because playing this in tune would require a Faustian bargain, but there were a couple painful moments in there.
I am an adult violin learner in Taiwan. This record made me speechless. This man play so seriously and devoting, and I have a feeling of asking him, why you are so serious? The lady in the background may has the same question. Sometimes one would insist on something so hard and only a few people could understand. I believe this kind of person may don't know why to insist so hard themselves, but they did. I think it may be explained as that they are sharing their talent with people, and not really asking for equivalent reward from men, because they have their treasure on the Heaven.

For those of you who have never played this song or have never played the violin , you can't even begin to grasp how absurdly difficul this piece is, let alone on a violin 😭
WOW. First time hearing this on a violin, and this guy is INSANE! Can you imagine the weeks it must have taken to learn this whole piece? Geez! Wish I could play like that....
This is actually very possible. Musical historians and researchers note odd idiosyncrasies in the organ Toccata and Fugue that do not correspond with the musical techniques of Bach's style at all. There are parallel octaves in the organ piece everywhere, something Bach never did normally. The Fugue also used primarily parallel sixths and thirds, not uncommon, but odd that the fugue has them so often for organ. It makes much more sense for the violin being the original medium in which Bach composed this piece because there is almost no other way to play a fugue on violin than with parallel 3rds and 6ths. It is theorized that the organ piece is a transcription of a now lost violin piece of the same name, transcribed by either Bach, or another composer from many years after his death.
I could tell from the very first notes of the fugue this was a performer of honesty, skill, and above all the inner passion to take such extreme risks! I adore his playing style and his virtuosity is inspiring. I find my own playing becoming a bit too fluffy sometimes and a performance of Bach which cuts through the veil between reality and fantasy, I think is just what I need to invigorate my playing.
Hello I am an ignorant teenager... my father can play this on organ and I was impressed and since I played violin I joked. "Hey lets play together!" He said. +SirHuddleston Fuddleston In fact it was first suggested by musicologist Peter Williams in a paper published in 1981. I remember reading a summary of his findings in the Galpin Society Journal around that time and heard it discussed and played on BBC Radio 3 not long after. In the summer of 1985, whilst on holiday in Venice I was walking through the canals one afternoon and heard someone practicing it in their apartment. Stopped me dead in my tracks. I'm not sure a full transcript had even been published at the time, but I just stood there on a bridge listening as the sound wafted from a window above, echoing off the buildings. No one else seemed to notice. No idea who it was, but it was a moment I'll never forget.
+SirHuddleston Fuddleston Is there a reason that D minor would be a better key for Organ than A minor? If not, wouldn't it be more parsimonious to suppose that Bach in fact wrote the piece for viola rather than violin?
+SirHuddleston Fuddleston Viola strings are one fifth lower than the corresponding violin strings. Thus, an original in D minor played on the viola would use the same fingering as an original played in A minor on the violin. Unless there were a reason to transpose one fifth down when arranging for organ, it seems to me that one would have expected the posited violin original to stay in A minor rather than being transposed for no reason. In contrast, a posited viola original would already have been in D minor.
