Had the privilege of not only seeing him in person, but playing this signature song, and grabbing a bite to eat with him after an outdoor concert back in the 70s. A true gentleman. Still have the menu he autographed for me. #FlyingHome

Awesome. I was a fan since I was a little kid, and I remember much later that there was a fire in his high rise apartment decades ago. Cool you were able to met him!

That's SO COOL! I have only met legends, but I haven't broken bread with them. Only one famous actor, but he is not a Legend. But he was super cool.

Look at the fun these musicians are having. This is how live music should be played, it's so pure and simple.

This was originally recorded in 1942 and music historians have stated that this is one of the first rock 'n' roll records. Great stuff fun to see the drummer and bass player in the groove.

Hampton, Armstrong, Goodman and Miller were my dad's absolute musical favorites back in the 40's. Guess how difficult and even life threatening it was for a young German soldier listening to forbidden allied radio stations back then.

Saw him once at Interlochen National Music Camp. He was about 70 then. He had all the teenagers from around the world on their feet almost the entire concert! He kicked every self aggrandizing rock star's butt that night. On a vibraphone.

My Dad introduced me to Lionel's hard swinging style on old Benny Goodman monoaural albums. The funky, vibrato skatting and the hum along style fascinated me; and even at age 10, I knew Mr. H was one cool cat. This is gut punching sound: frantic, frenetic, relentless. I have an l.p. of Lionel and his Jazz All Stars Live in Emmen, Holland, recorded when the musicians were considerably older. That sound is a little more mellow and contemplative, but still has the signature flare of vibe clusters in the closing bars. Check out Lionel with Wild Bill Davis on Hammond Organ in their rendition of "Misty". What incredible talent. Gives me chils.

Who ever was behind that could teach many people today something - I mean, why is something that was made in 1957 sounding 500x better than stuff you hear today (all analog, perhaps?) - not to mention the general quality of the music - I hate to sound like I'm putting down today's stuff, but still, c'mon!!??
