Charlie Christian played the first electric guitar solos ever heard in a band. Rock music can grace some of its roots to this man and his work. Groundbreaking for its time!
When I hear Charlie Christian play,I get chills not only because his playing was so precise, hip and swinging, but that it had such an effect on the developments in modern jazz to come.He is one of those musicians who died so young that you can only wonder what might have been. But Charlie is still a major influence on today's guitarists.
@@musik102 He set the pace for ALL SOLO GUITAR PLAYERS with his great aggressive and chordal note improv solos....and RIFFS, this is GREAT MUSIC AT THE CORE!! Charlie is who Barney Kessel, Joe Pass, Howard Roberts, all the rest of the fine Jazz guitars copied and was influenced by! The King of guitar soloing: CHARLIE CHRISTIAN! I never would have played/recorded so much music (over 10,000 sessions records, movies, TV shows) if I didn't know his playing, styles and inventiveness!
Charlie Christian set the modern approach of playing the guitar into motion.Fittingly, one of Charlie's after-hours jam partners was Thelonious Monk, who many heard them were described as " hand-in-glove" He was the main influence on the great Wes Montgomery.
Fletcher Henderson on piano! I knew Fletcher worked with Benny after the band battle with Chick Webb. Teddy Wilson also played piano fir Benny's small group. This track is amazing!

Fletcher Henderson was a great composer but later on the played with Teddy Wilson who is an absolute god. If you don't know I would check out Moonglow by Benny Goodman and the album "Pres and Teddy" Along with Hampton, Christian and Goodman they where a revolutionary group in more than one way
ClaudiaJazzy UK I think it is John Hammond he put Charlie and Lionel Hampton together with Benny Goodman . Benny married John's sister . John Hammond discovererd
ClaudiaJazzy UK sorry it cut off , John Hammond discovered Billy Holiday , Aretha Franklin , BobDylan, George Benson, Bruce Springsteen and was a big shot at Columbia records .But as you say the wrong tune title.
it's a Lionel Hampton penned tune. It was reportedly developed while Hampton was in the Benny Goodman band. A gig in 1939 required the band to fly from Los Angeles to Atlantic City, the first time Hampton had flown. He began whistling a tune while waiting for the plane to taxi. Goodman asked him what it was, and Hampton said, "I don't know. We can call it 'Flying Home,' I guess. Hampton later confessed that the tune was a way for him to keep his mind off of the impending flight. The Goodman Quartet played the tune for the first time that night; later that year Goodman recorded the first version of the song, featuring a memorable solo from pioneering guitarist Charlie Christian. Hampton liked the song so much that it became his theme once he left Goodman.
I suspect Benny Goodman knows the songs he introduces, this one being "Flying Home," however, if you'd like to hear Charlie Christian featured playing "Seven Come Eleven" with the group, click on this link: th-cam.com/video/mOnhcdAMInA/w-d-xo.html

History was being made with this recording. Long live Charlie Christian! Love your channel -- Happy New Year!
Big show for the new discovery. I was worried with the first couple of bars if he was going to be cautious. Then he was brilliant.

For a less genteel version look for the Glenn Miller version - he did more than play Moonlight Serenade and In The Mood!
Not genteel to my ears. Very striking original playing.
Forget Miller!
Charlie's flying high on this one.
RIP Charlie Christian, who died far too young.
Charlie's solo !!!!!!!
Different version than I’ve heard before
Whos the weirdo saying this is not Flying Home, Its Seven Come Eleven? Does he know jazz at ALL?? Fabulous recording THANK YOU for posting!! xxx

insane groove
この演奏ではわかりにくいですが、レスター・ヤングの影響を受けてますね。
Charlie died in his 23rd year.
Then he would have been 22! He passed at age 25.
Fly
listen to his attack, done without a pick.
+AnyMajorDude You can get quite a callus on a thumb. Problem is, once a while they crack open, and that's it.
Charlie always used a pick. Big heavy triangular pick. The one photo above was a candid shot, not a performance shot.
I have but one name Was Montgomery.
Was this the second Spirituals to Swing concert?
No.
its nice and all, but its "seven come eleven" not "flying home"
I'm slightly confused. Are you trying to say that the title of the song is "Seven Come Eleven"?
astanoriel Well, Benny Goodman announces the tune as Flying Home.
+astanoriel this isn't seven come eleven. trying to "get" what makes you say that.

That's all you know. It is Flying Home, Not 7 come 11.
There will never be another
