    I don't believe this song is a contradiction (considering they are celebs themselves) because not all celebs fall into that trap, and SOAD happen to be very proactive and positive, and they're actions prove it. They try to use their stardom and clout for good to shed light on various harsh realities and socioeconomic issues. In summation, just because someone is a celebrity doesn't mean they are living that they are a "typical celebrity". Good stuff man. Keep em coming! Peace bro

      Totally, they've been loud af since day one about world events and humanitarian values. They've been banned from playing in certain countries because they'll openly talk about the Armenian genocide.

    • @pillar81
      @pillar81 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I see SOAD using their stardom and clout to bring the world's ills to light and they're praised for it, while other celebs are lambasted by people and I wondered why this is so, and I think I know.
      The only difference I see is that there's no doubt that SOAD believes in those things, while celebs are just virtue signaling opportunists who are seizing on the zeitgeist to benefit them.
      We've seen movies depict Hollywood a something that tries to capitalize on the zeitgeist for financial gain, that there's a conditioned disdain and mistrust of the celebrities who speak out.

      they as a band also went against scummy industry standards so they don't abuse the "lesser" band mates...Daron as the main songwriter and Serj as the frontman and biggest "star" would have made tons more money than the other two if they had "sold out" like it's usual. They would not allow magazine covers or interviews to single out one of the members and demanded to be treated as a band...until they kinda broke up, but before that they were truely loyal towards another and never towards the industry.

    • @violabeaumont3758
      @violabeaumont3758 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The band came together in Hollywood also, they have their own scars from Hollywood's ills and this is a song they use to express themselves and vent that. This is a very personal song for the band.

      What stardom and celebrity are u talking about, although I love the band dearly, they are not celebs, system never made it that famous. Only a certain generation of rock fans and their parents have heard of them, they are not Kings of leon, they arr not led zeppelin, they were never red hot chillies, they never had that mass appeal

    Just because you’re winning a game, doesn’t mean you can’t call out the game for the way it’s played. If anything, people who win the game are MOST effective at exposing it, because they have an amplified voice, and because their opinions can’t just be dismissed offhand as “sore losers.”

    i can't recomend enough the song Dreaming, in my opinon is the most complex song they ever wrote (musically speaking), sadly, there isn't a full live version of this song, if you listen to it, you'll know why, if you ever consider to do an exception to the "only live performance reaction" rule...

    It depends on the celeb. for SOAD, I take it as real warnings and belief. Having following SOAD since Toxicity and his solo career, he believes in what he says, imo. He's been putting out music to fight politics and Hollywood way of thinking and never stopped - not just American politics, but heavy on Armenian politics as well. I also never saw Serj go 'Hollywood' really - he grew up poor (or at least not wealthy), and speaks through his music. He did get huge with SOAD, but I don't think in the 'Hollywood' way. He's also never backed down, just watch "Walls" from his solo stuff. When SOAD/Serj sing about deep stuff, this is the stuff you see Serj living out for the most part. Music is his way of fighting back I think.

    Daron (the guitarist and one singing this one) was born IN Hollywood- but like the grimey, run down part. So more than the contradictions they face in being celebrities, it’s about the two sides of Hollywood: the shiny movie stars, and the drug addicted street people you see when you actually drive around the city

    Wonderful topic of discussion. Every single musician seems to have penned a version of the "fame isn't fun" mantra, and as a 'commoner' I've always found the 'human dilemma' aspect of this extremely intriguing. Like, you've spent your life devoted to a singular purpose and once you've seemingly obtained that purpose, you realize that you are still just a human, always looking for more, yet somehow not as human because you've been somewhat idolized.. in the end, I just think humans are greedy creatures.

    They grew up on Hollywood. They did an interview talking about how people come to LA: form bands, attempt acting careers, etc. Succeed or fail, then go back to where they came from or stay. For SOAD, however, they are home when they are in Hollywood. Family & friends from childhood are there. So they know what they’re talking about.

    When I hear celebrities outta the pop culture (and these days social media) criticise Hollywood and such, I try to take it serious. That's hard though, if their fame is based on vanity.
    For artists like SoaD who basically made their fame on criticising society, highlighting social issues, and making parodies on social situations it's the opposite - I find it hard to be critical of the message they deliver. I know for a fact that I cannot afford to buy into everything they portray, but I hold so much trust in them that I almost forget to think critically... It is what it is. I still try to keep an open mind and analyse every possible perspective that I can perceive with my mind.
    Have a great day, Sir!

    When a fellow human speaks out against corruption in Hollywood, I do indeed take them as real. Even if they're so-called "celebrities'" working in Hollywood (although it may depend on the specific person in question, some may just be doing it to follow anti-establishment trends, but I suspect that most who speak out are doing so from the heart).
    As a former member of the Green Party (UK) I spoke out against corruption I saw within the party, whilst still remaining a member, in the hope to help bring forth some positive change from within. Similarly, as a member of The Zeitgeist Movement, I spoke out against some hypocrisy and corruption I saw within the movement. My basic point being that we have to self-police. Rather than staying silent. TH-cam/google is, in some ways, a very corrupt corporation, but you wouldn't be a hypocrite for speaking out against said corruption just because you're using a platform that dominates this particular domain.
    We live in a Capitalist monetary market system. One of which you and I didn't get a say in voting for or against. So then, we have a few choices. We can either accept the way things and say nothing. Or we can accept that it wont change over night and thus continue making money from within this corrupt system or within corrupt institutions whilst speaking out against said corruption. Or if we want to avoid all corruption linked to the system we were all born into and conditioned upon, then we can boycott everything, go and live out in the woods and probably starve to death. Such wonderful choices we have, aren't they?
    When an animal is locked in a cage, the animal will still accept food from their slave-master. Just like you and I, we need to make money to eat, to have a roof over our heads, to live a half-decent life. In one way or another we are all victims AND agents of the corrupt system we wish to change. But remaining silent in fear of being accused of being hypocrites or traitors is unhelpful.
    Would you think me a hypocrite for being anti-Capitalist and owning a laptop and smart phone? Do you believe that all this technology only exists because of Capitalism? Or do you recognize that it exists due to human innovation of which is controlled (and often limited and hindered) by the systematic delivery system known as Capitalism?
    If I were a filmmaker and wanted to make a socially conscious film, would you think me a hypocrite if the only way I found to get that film to the masses were to accept a crappy deal from a corrupt Hollywood studio? I could of course try to raise the money myself and make a low-budget independent film, but it would be extremely unlikely to reach a large number of people and make the same kind of impact. How can we effect progressive change if no one gets to hear or watch what we're talking about?
    Just to clear, I have a tremendous amount of respect for people like Akala for remaining independent whilst getting their message out. But I also have no problem with artists who use more mainstream methods. It's extremely hard work to survive as an independent artist in this day and age. The very large majority don't make it, and never get heard.

    Bravo! Greeting from Japan again! I’m so happy to you post reaction to Lost in Hollywood.
    I think this song express a naive side of rock’nroll. The man (women) who dismissed that girl(boy) gone to Hollywood blames the wily people on the couches. He (She) also blames the girl(boy) gone to Hollywood. And he (she) blames himself(herself) that the helpless man(women) couldn’t pretend the girl(boy) go to Hollywood. And he(she) abuse all the stupid people in a corner of the street.
    That’s the spirit of rock’n roll. Thanks.

    SOAD is from LA so they have a first person POV of Hollywood's effect. Definitely not a contradiction on their end.

    I know they make a reference to Hollywood in "Prison" I think it was? I haven't looked into it, but I wonder if their songs all may tell a hidden story in some way. With SOAD you just never know..

    They are from hollywood so they're whole lives they've seen a constant flow of people coming to the city in search of fame. Has to be pretty crazy to witness that your whole life.

  • @YanBrassard
    @YanBrassard 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I don't believe it is contradictory since SOAD has never been embedded in the Hollywood system. They were always independent artistically. Of course, they signed contracts with big labels because they became really huge on the metal scene, but they do things differently.

    Word nice react Boyyyyd! But FYI System of a Down GREW UP in LA, they didn't go there looking for fame. They went to a bi-lingual Armenian highscool in LA (or 3 of them did anyway, I think the bassist was from somewhere else). So they can unironically sing about LA's bad side! 🤘😬🤘

    So...
    They grew up in what had been the "Armenian ghetto" in LA, literally with the Kardashians 35 years ago
    Before any of them were famous, they were just eastern European immigrants, facing as much discrimination as anyone else.
    Ok, that may be an exaggeration...
    But I hope you understand....

    Just for fun... The guitarist wrote and sang this song, not the lead singer. No one would recognize him in a crowd, without being an insane SOTD fan. Just a thought, I'm sure he still does fine of course.

    to me, it totally depends on WHICH celebrity says it and i only trust the word of a handful of celebrities based on the track record of remaining down to earth and truthful and if they ever do slip up how they have corrected themselves and bettered themselves from that mistake and owned it and actively fixed themselves and helped to educate others based on their new understanding etc....i trust system of a down

    I think if a celeb was insecure, it would come off as disingenuous, like they were either trying to compliment themselves for overcoming their challenges, or trying to sway potential competition. That said, this song feels more like its told from someone trapped in Hollywood, I think of skid row, warning others not to come.

    I agree Toxicity is the better album. That was their peak for me. Not that Hypnotize/Mesmerize are bad, but it felt a little too different for me. B.Y.O.B. is great, though.

    Totally agree toxicity is the better album but hypnotize and mesmerize always gives me the feeling of one album. But I must suggest you look into their stuff outside of System of a Down. Serj has a lot of good solo work and Darrin has another band calls scars on Broadway who one of their albums is rumored to be the lost SOAD album

  • @benmacdhui
    @benmacdhui 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    MrLboyd I agree. Toxicity is their best record overall. That said, their entire catalog is fantastic- sans 'Steal This Album' of course

  • @jimbojones8978
    @jimbojones8978 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'd like to think that it's the protestor/anarchist in them. I've listened to Serj in interviews and I legitimately think this song is a warning. I also don't think they're too full of themselves not to understand the irony. I see your point about the celebrity voice, but I'm going to give them a pass given their body of work and IRL interviews. I think ultimately it depends on the circumstance/context behind it. And even then it's subjective.
