He does not want you to read too much into his lyrics and come to your own decisions about his music.... while a lot of it seems really obvious I think we should respect what he says and not put him on some kind of political pedestal... even if it's pretty obvious what he's saying.

I don't regret what I did really, I have a good life now, but I don't think we should send our kids to die when they can't even buy a beer or smoke a cigarette and still haven't sat the first day in any college we are failing our children.

This is one of my favorite anti-war songs. It blends some hardcore metal vocals with almost operatic parts with an almost soulful groove on the chorus. A great song. I do agree with your take on the class divide. But then again, class divisions are open to criticism, especially in art. And this is art.

Damn they were TIGHT live! This kind of chaotic stuff is really hard to play live. Technical stuff aside, it's giving it that frenzied, yet synchronized feel that's a real feat. It's like they perfected the imperfection of it. It's almost easier to have impeccable note placement like a robot than what they're doing here.
Saw them back at leeds in 2003 and my god one of the best sets I've ever heard/seen even with their set being stopped part way through due to fences falling because of fans pushing forward too much, one of the greatest bands out there

Look at Edward Snowden, hell look at the current case with Daniel Hale. Tons of government agencies slide the media inside info, it's not a big deal, IF.... that info helps the government in anyway, paints a pretty picture over an ugly wall of truth. Daniel Hale though, was accused of giving an investigative journalist truthful information in the public interest about secretive US drone warfare program. Revealing gross human rights violations, and that drones were more deadly and less accurate than the US presented publicly. In a particular 5month stretch, ninety percent of people killed were not the intended target-including an American father and his teenage son. Most of this was signed off on and escalated by Obama, but Trump of course kept it going for a while. He was charged using the Espionage Act from 100yrs ago, and only in the last 5-10yrs has there been an uptick in its use, it states that you are a full blown spy and were caught spying on/against American interest. The courts also proclaimed that any testimony by those accused under this act, and any physical evidence supporting the accused will not be allowed during the trial. So Hale took a plea deal, he'll probably get 10, but the feds wanted life. This is also a huge shot at journalists and the media, intimidating them to not use trusted government sources out of fear of arrest. Control of the media is the first thing an authoritarian dictatorship does.

It was written pretty much as the Iraq War happened - hence the references to “dancing in the desert” and “anchors sitting dripped in oil”, which alludes to the US fleet camping in the Strait of Hormuz while they “liberated” Iraq. You got what the song was about anyway, which touched on how the working class have always been sent to fight wars for the goals of the rich and their political lackeys.
Not quite accurate, the largest owner of stations send an email recommendation not to play chop Suzy due to 9/11 lyrics and that was like 1200 stations not playing it and still gained momentum.
I didn't know this, they played a ton of system in Detroit after 9/11. Of course one of our main rock stations at the time was Canadian, so it didn't have the censorship our American based rock station did. Like they didn't even bleep f bombs

They break off the soothing, groovy section early, which deals with escapism, to go to the aggressive blast beats and the lyrical call to action, essentially "breaking through" the before mentioned lies. I could not think of another band that has creative details like that.

They usually communicate their message through the lyrics and emotionally underline it or give a sense of urgency through the music, but the music on it's own (only talking about the structure, of course) pretty much follows the usual format.
Their album Toxicity came out right around 9/11. The song “Jet Pilot” totally had me thinking the same as you about them being on the no-fly list, etc.

When the world becomes too venomous to tolerate, when stupidity and selfishness cascade in greater and greater volumes and frequency over the poor and oppressed, there music let's me know I'm not alone in seeing it, and their words give voice to the pressure in my head. I have tried to escape a few times and failed to do so or was stopped. SOAD pulled me back from the cliff edge so many times.

My father joined the Army to go to college and medical school as an Army doctor, and Mom still worked two jobs to support us as well. He climbed ranks so that his kids could go to college without loans.

When I was in Elementary School (90s), Army Ads were about the honor and heritage of the US Armed Service. When I was in High School (00s), it became ARMY OF ONE! and those Godsmack Navy Ads. When I was in College, we weren't really feeling rushing headlong into the new forever war anymore, so the ads changed to "This is really great work training!" They have now abandoned that as well, since the statistics don't support it. Now? Now it's: Maybe we'll pay for your college. Maybe.
yeah its really messed up that they are allowed free advertisement in schools taking advantage of vulnerable and young people more than a few of my friends felt compelled to join for college and a decent paying job and all of them regretted it.

Great band and a lot of fun to watch in concert, I was blessed to hear Prison Song in concert before it was released and it was amazing in concert, that same concert I caught 1 of the 2 drumsticks that was thrown to the crowd, It is tucked away somewhere but I still have that bad boy! Has thier name imprinted on it, and I believe it was the off hand stick (left stick if he's right handed) because I found the person with the other stick at the concert and it was shredded in the middle for about 2 inches of the drumstick down to half of the diameter of the stick, whereas mine was beat up and dented but did not get shredded.
I recommend that you listen to Holy Mountains or I-E-A-I-A-I-O to hear the variance and power in Serj's voice. Their best protest/political song imo is BOOM! I know you're reacting to the Live versions but you have to see the video to BOOM! in your spare time, filmed while out protesting the Iraq war with members of the public.
Rick Rubin has been destroying rock bands since the 90s, but he does a good job once in a while. He's a phenomenal producer, but man if he hasn't single-handedly sterilized a lot of great bands with his style.

I figured it for Desert Storm in Iraq in the 90s. They used to televise bombings as they were happening, watching SCUDs beamed into peoples' homes. Bill Hicks actually did a bit on it in his later specials.

SOAD is as conscious as RATM, just a lot more cryptic to the casual listener (except on Prison Song). They're all of Armenian decent, and they incorporate themes of Armenian culture, including their folk music, particularly in the vocal style, but also the history of their people. I've jokingly called their style "Armenian Folk Metal" for years.
My favorite version of this song is the SNL version. They made them take all of the "fuck"s out for TV, so Daron just screamed "FUCK YOU" where he normally screams "Freedom".

You reacted to a lot of bands in the past that were and are still important for me, like Alice in Chains or SOAD. 4:07 The only 2 bands that I can think of who came up in the 90s that are the best at talking about that stuff is System and Rage.
Rage came up in the 90s... system didn’t release their first album till half way through 98. And they got big in the 2000s

SOAD is one of, if not my favorite band, It's so awesome you're seeing this performed live. I have seen them in concert once, and it was absolutely incredible! so powerful.

Great band and a lot of fun to watch in concert, I was blessed to hear Prison Song in concert before it was released and it was amazing in concert, that same concert I caught 1 of the 2 drumsticks that was thrown to the crowd, It is tucked away somewhere but I still have that bad boy! Has thier name imprinted on it, and I believe it was the off hand stick (left stick if he's right handed) because I found the person with the other stick at the concert and it was shredded in the middle for about 2 inches of the drumstick down to half of the diameter of the stick, whereas mine was beat up and dented but did not get shredded.

I recommend that you listen to Holy Mountains or I-E-A-I-A-I-O to hear the variance and power in Serj's voice. Their best protest/political song imo is BOOM! I know you're reacting to the Live versions but you have to see the video to BOOM! in your spare time, filmed while out protesting the Iraq war with members of the public.

The album is a production masterpiece, the combination of these guys and Rick Rubin really made one of the greatest and most unique albums ever.
Rick Rubin has been destroying rock bands since the 90s, but he does a good job once in a while. He's a phenomenal producer, but man if he hasn't single-handedly sterilized a lot of great bands with his style.

"Dancing in the desert, blowing up the sunshine" is the Nuke tests from the 50s in the NV desert.
I figured it for Desert Storm in Iraq in the 90s. They used to televise bombings as they were happening, watching SCUDs beamed into peoples' homes. Bill Hicks actually did a bit on it in his later specials.

and 2, That one of the terms the pentagon uses to measure radiation is litterally in "Sunshine Units"...

SOAD rabbit hole as been a lot of fun, your enthusiasm is priceless
SOAD is as conscious as RATM, just a lot more cryptic to the casual listener (except on Prison Song). They're all of Armenian decent, and they incorporate themes of Armenian culture, including their folk music, particularly in the vocal style, but also the history of their people. I've jokingly called their style "Armenian Folk Metal" for years.
