  • If I were a dictator ...
    1979 Mercedes 450 SEL 6.9 (W116)
    Power: 286 bhp / 405 lb ft
    0-60: 7.2 Seconds
    Top Speed: 140 mph
    Transmission: 3 speed automatic
    Engine: 6,834cc V8
In its day you could have bought two Jaguar XJS V12s and a Lancia Beta HPE for the price of a base model 450 SEL 6.9. Understated and beautifully engineered the car was the choice of racing drivers, dictators and movie stars.
The huge engine was hand made with forged (not cast) components and a dry sump, usually associated with racing cars and exotic supercars and self levelling hydropneumatic suspension was fitted all round.
This 450 SEL 6.9 is no ordinary car Delivered in 1979 to it’s first owner in Kuwait this full power (European spec) car has full leather interior, including dashboard and headlining, electric reclining rear seats and climate control.

When I did the peeking to Paris rally, we did it in a Datsun 240 Z but one competitor did it in a lovely old big Merc I envied them

I’m curious but why do you think it’s not that nice to drive… it looks a pretty good example US spec bumpers and lights aside…

I wanted to like it I like large powerful saloons but it just had a very floaty feeling about it

@@TheDavidhartley that’s typical old school Mercedes’ they are very floaty cars too drive. Fast on a straight, but don’t expect any real handling out of them as they waft around corners nearly on two wheels. As long as they can accelerate fast in a straight line to get a African or Middle East dictator out of a gun battle from AK47 fire, that’s all that’s required.
