So the reason Mukbang started (And it's gotten an extremely different following since then) is because, in South Korea, they binge eat together during holidays. South Koreans, particularly South Korean young people who live alone, started watching these videos to get a sensation of the community they lost by moving out. The original Mukbangs were livestreamed so that people could interact with each other like they would've interacted with family and/or friends. I think it comes from a great place, but it's gotten wildly different since then. I just think the history on it is fascinating.
It started in S Korea as two people coming home to lonely apartments after work and sharing a meal tog. Mostly , couples. So, they could eat tog. When no time to eat out. Which, they all eat out after work. They eat until 10, drink and talk. They eat for everything. A meal with family, friends, etc. When I lived there, sometimes they ate dinner after dinner. No kidding! It is called a "muck bong"....I hate when they say it wrong. They have taken something sweet and ruined it. In Korea they eat, not talk. They dont eat a lot at the meal.
I think North America also binge eats during the holidays 😂 (I'm making a joke here). Every Thanksgiving and Winter Holiday is just mass quantities of food, and eating so much you unbutton your pants. But thank you for explaining the origin! I've always wondered why. Noone forced him to eat vegan or to eat raw vegan, he was just very.... naive. (He said he'll add some animal products to his diet in order to get healthy.) Then he discovered junk food. The rest is history :D

I once read from a native korean "Mukbang" was actually aimed to lonely people. In Korea, you usually have a dinner with your family and talk about your days. Since most koreans now have busy schedule or living far away from their family, they couldn't eat with their family. So some people live-streamed themselves eating while talking and interacting with the audience. The people who also had the same experience usually watched it to relate the feeling of talking with someone while eating. Idk if it's true but it's a wholesome story. Idk what happened in translation of this wholesome activity.

Coming from the korean words mukda (to eat) and bangsong (broadcast), mukbang was a way for you to feel less alone. There's also this korean thing about eating "deliciously" and "eating well" it's a compliment and means that you are enjoying what you eat, which in turn makes others want to eat too. Korean people take the whole "eating with your eyes" thing to a different degree as it's a trait that people even look for in dating. Like you can hear men say "oh I don't want a girl that eats like a rabbit, I want someone who eats well, who looks like she enjoys what she's eating." Of course, this is talking about HOW one eats, but they still want skinny/"healthy-looking" women... that's another story though. As mukbang rose in popularity, mukbang became a form of entertainment going from live streams to TH-cam to TV even. There is a fear of mukbang encouraging obesity in Korea too. As children and young people see the portions in mukbang and want to eat it too. Though, it should also be mentioned that some people have said that when they are on a diet, watching someone eat the food they're craving helps them vicariously satisfy the craving. Though, mukbang coming to the West, it's very rare that I enjoy watching a Western mukbang channel as I don't think that they eat in a way that makes me go "wow I want to try that". It just seems like bad manners and gross. But there is obviously an audience for this kind of content, so who am I to say what works and what doesn't. When it comes to binge eating and over-eating, I don't know if I anyone can claim that they may have a problem or an eating disorder per say unless it is their own personal therapist that specializes in eating disorders. But it's definitely going to be interesting to watch how mukbang and social media and the people who participate view food and morph eating disorders and binge-eating into something different, seeing how it all evolves. Of course, this is a more serious take, I guess? Lol I do think that there are people who do these kinds of videos started because it was a convenient way to monetize an unhealthy lifestyle and continue to disregard their health...
I really like your take on this!! My personal experience with mukbang (and eating asmr) is using it to stimulate appetite. Apparently it's really common for people with poor appetites watch it to make them hungry- I do this too. Honestly though I do agree with the gluttony issue

Which, they all eat out after work. They eat until 10, drink and talk. They eat for everything. A meal with family, friends, etc. When I lived there, sometimes they ate dinner after dinner. No kidding! It is called a "muck bong"....I hate when they say it wrong. They have taken something sweet and ruined it. In Korea they eat, not talk. They dont eat a lot at the meal.

His name, Nikocado Avocado was like his brand, he was known for eating a predominately raw vegan diet and he ate gigantic amounts of avocados (obviously). I remember a video where he was traveling somewhere by a plane and he was filming himself in a bathroom, having a dinner of 10 or so avocados (I was shocked lol, I never knew back then people ate avocado with a spoon and certainly not like 10 of them).
Anyways, he preached a lot about animal cruelty and stuff, he was doing a lot of healthy recipe videos and he seemed pretty chill. Noone forced him to eat vegan or to eat raw vegan, he was just very.... naive. I think he didn't realise his raw diet was unhealthy, and instead of eating a more healthy wholesome vegan diet, he just went crazy and made a video crying about how he didn't want to be vegan anymore. (He said he'll add some animal products to his diet in order to get healthy.) Then he discovered junk food. The rest is history :D

Since most koreans now have busy schedule or living far away from their family, they couldn't eat with their family. So some people live-streamed themselves eating while talking and interacting with the audience. The people who also had the same experience usually watched it to relate the feeling of talking with someone while eating. Idk if it's true but it's a wholesome story.

I know this is 2 years old... But holy shit, where the fuck have I been for 2 years? This is the most entertaining video I've seen in a long time.
So, mukbang started in Korea because of a few cultural reasons. 1) it's normal for people to not move out of their parent's house until they're getting married. This started to not be the case as more young people started to move out of the country to the city for jobs. 2) It's super cultural (especially in the country more than the city) to eat together as a family for dinner.
As more people started to live alone, they started to feel lonely eating alone, and mukbang became a thing. Coming from the korean words mukda (to eat) and bangsong (broadcast), mukbang was a way for you to feel less alone. There's also this korean thing about eating "deliciously" and "eating well" it's a compliment and means that you are enjoying what you eat, which in turn makes others want to eat too. Korean people take the whole "eating with your eyes" thing to a different degree as it's a trait that people even look for in dating. Like you can hear men say "oh I don't want a girl that eats like a rabbit, I want someone who eats well, who looks like she enjoys what she's eating." Of course, this is talking about HOW one eats, but they still want skinny/"healthy-looking" women... that's another story though. As mukbang rose in popularity, mukbang became a form of entertainment going from live streams to TH-cam to TV even. There is a fear of mukbang encouraging obesity in Korea too. As children and young people see the portions in mukbang and want to eat it too. Though, it should also be mentioned that some people have said that when they are on a diet, watching someone eat the food they're craving helps them vicariously satisfy the craving.
Though, mukbang coming to the West, it's very rare that I enjoy watching a Western mukbang channel as I don't think that they eat in a way that makes me go "wow I want to try that". It just seems like bad manners and gross. But there is obviously an audience for this kind of content, so who am I to say what works and what doesn't.
When it comes to binge eating and over-eating, I don't know if I anyone can claim that they may have a problem or an eating disorder per say unless it is their own personal therapist that specializes in eating disorders. But it's definitely going to be interesting to watch how mukbang and social media and the people who participate view food and morph eating disorders and binge-eating into something different, seeing how it all evolves.
Of course, this is a more serious take, I guess? Lol I do think that there are people who do these kinds of videos started because it was a convenient way to monetize an unhealthy lifestyle and continue to disregard their health...
I really like your take on this!! My personal experience with mukbang (and eating asmr) is using it to stimulate appetite. Apparently it's really common for people with poor appetites watch it to make them hungry- I do this too. Honestly though I do agree with the gluttony issue
