Is that the anime about a ninja but by definition he's not a ninja 😂. Stealth, assassination, nope just an annoying person in a orange track suit, because orange doesn't stick out at night at all.
And on top of all that, Randy Pitchford, co-founder of Gearbox (devs of the borderlands series) said that an anime adaption would be a ridiculous idea and no one would like it. Even if it wasn’t an anime adaptation, an animated series would’ve been amazing. It goes to show just how out-of-touch Randy Pitchford is and how he’s running the Borderlands series into the ground with the failure of Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands. Borderlands 2 (a game that came out in the 2012) has more concurrent players than borderlands 3 does. A game that came out in 2019. I really hope Gearbox gets their heads out of their asses and gets rid of Randy Pitchford for good.
It's crazy since Borderlands has primarily used a Texas cast pool throughout, so every character already sounds like a Funimation-dubbed anime character in some way.
I'd take that anime adaptation over this live-action garbagefest that idk why it was greenlit for, would have been a marvelous idea if the casting was right, and they stuck to the script of the 1st or 2nd game...

And then they slap it with pg13. It's a mature gore game. They didn't use the lore to its advantage and weren't authentic. That's why game failed.
We're in a timeline where DOOM gets 5+ new games and re-releases in the last ten years, and we can't get a new Duke Nukem game, because _Randy Pitchford_ wants to play the morality card. Seeing Borderlands fail as a movie, is *deserved* _schadenfreude._
General rule of thumb for for Hollywood Movies: a movie has to make at least two and a half times the cost of the movie to be profitable. Which means the Borderlands movie needs to make around $363 million. I don't see that happening, even with International sales.
There were so many red flags that this film was headed for disaster, from the questionable casting, the really off trailers that try to make it more Guardians Of The Galaxy and less like its source material, and a PG-13 rating for a raunchy rated M series. So it's no surprise this film flopped with everyone.
Literally the only trailer they should of did was the opening bus scene from Borderlands 1 in live action. That trailer would of generated an unbelievable amount of hype, but instead we got a mashup of crap that makes the movie look bad before you've even seen it. I mean wow the bus scene in Borderlands 1 was Marcus telling them to wake up back there with each of them doing a pose while "Ain't No Rest For The Wicked" by Cage The Elephant plays in the background. That scene would of been cheap to make and a complete no brainer since it sets the ENTIRE TONE of the game and would do the same for the movie.
It was shot to be R-rated and the studio mandated it be edited to be PG13. You can actually tell by some of the editing; in certain scenes the rhythms are off and there are strange cuts between shots that don't match. Clearly something was supposed to go between them (presumably a bit of R-rated violence). I guarantee there'll be an R-rated blu ray release.
I agree that the Borderlands movie should be rated R. However a lot of rated M games are really more akin to a PG-13 movie as far as objectionable content. Most Halo games for example.
This is fantastic news - it shows that people don't want to watch a crappy film just because of the association with the game. If you release a subpar product and try to cash in from name alone, then this is what you deserve. If filmmakers took the time to understand their target audience and create a faithful adaptation then the situation would be entirely different. We deserve better.
Where the f is Mordecai and Brick in this film. They’re just as integral to the franchise as Lilith and Roland are. That right there is reason enough not to see it.
By my count, a lot of bad movies from Alone in The Dark, BloodRayne, Far Cry, horrible Resident Evil, Monster Hunter and Street Fighter movies, I could go on all day, but I think everyone has already figured it out.
Most of the casting and characters/dialogue were pretty meh, just from watching the trailers. Plus Claptrap should not be the character I liked the most in the trailers. 😂
I read somewhere that apparently the directos told the cast not to get into the source material so that if the move flops (probably honestly) then it can be written off as non canon. Which I still find extremely weird why can’t they follow the source material
Borderlands should’ve been rated R just like the games were rated M. That way it could have more tongue in cheek humor the series is known for. Also more guns.
Fun Fact: the director they first hired thought it was going to be R Rated until, in a live recorded announcement, Randy Pitchford said "Bring your friends, your family, your loved ones". At that moment the director looked with a shocked face at Randy and realized what he just got himself involved into.
Considering the last several "Gearbox" published works have been absolute disasters I've got to wonder if this was intentional for the sake of a massive devaluation before the merger with take two finalizes.
it's been so depressing seeing Borderlands end the way it has, between the garbage ""plot"" and attempts at comedy of BL3 and this disaster. like it literally hurts lmao
Randy Pitchford being mad about the critical and commercial failure that is the Borderlands movie? *plays Randy Pitchford's own song about him saying "boo hoo hoo"
It's funny because with how well Deadpool is performing at the box office, being a rated-R movie with excessively gruesome violence, it's literally what should have happened with Borderlands.
SecondWind called what's happening "IP fracking" it's like mining, only worse. We have so much with the MCU, Star Wars, Star Trek, Game of Thrones, and a few others that new IPs can't flourish. The studio tried with a fresh IP but they have to learn it has to be a good movie first.
No cap, I haven’t seen a single ad, or trailer, or commercial for this movie. And I live in Chicago. You can’t go 10 feet without seeing an ad for something.
As the crazy Alan Moore said: Not everything needs to be adapted. And I add, not everything needs to be a franchise, not everything needs a sequel, and you can always admire a work in its original medium, be it a comic book, a book or a video game.
Adding further onto that, remember what EA tried to do with Dead Space once the third game was announced? They expected a #1 hit while trying to force it outside of its main niche, and instead failed to make the Top 20 and alienated fans. Basically, they forgot what made Dead Space so special to begin with and thought they could turn this survival horror series into an action-packed one, when 13 years ago, we knew otherwise...especially considering they added microtransaction-fueled crafting to Dead Space 3.
In a statement, Rotten Tomatoes wrote, “We take the integrity of our scores seriously and do not tolerate any attempts to manipulate them. We have a dedicated team who monitors our platforms regularly and thoroughly investigates and resolves any suspicious activity.” And yet manipulation still happens. RT needs to audit their quality assurance team. There's no way the audience score should be that high. I haven't found a single REAL person who speaks positively about it. It has to be a score manipulated by bots.
Strike 1: Not using Claptrap original voice actor Strike 2: getting a short guy to play Roland Strike 3: getting a 55 year old actress to play Lilith Conclusion: you get yourself a parody
Honestly I have forgotten they were developing a borderlands movie it's no surprise it's a flop. Some people were saying The only positive thing about that was Jack Black voicing claptrap that was it
Would rather they stop using celebrity VA so much and go with proper VA's Not that all A lister actors are bad in fact many are good VA, hence why Despicable me and IMO the first Megamind were so good. But there are professional VA's this is literally their job and stick, they IMO should have priority when it comes to VA roles.
I dont get how anybody could say that. Jack Black's claptrap sounds absolutely nothing like clap trap. Right in the very beginning of the 2nd game, Claptrap explains that although he sounds enthusiastic and happy, he is incredibly depressed. It's a part of his character to sound the way he does.
There is so much more to it than just marketing, quality, and word of mouth. It seems like the producers didn't even know what borderlands was, had no idea about the world and characters, and I doubt a single one of them even played the games. They had no idea what fans of the series wanted because they didn't play/understand it themselves, and decided that they knew better than the audience. They decided to do their own thing, and it backfired massively. They made the same mistake as the halo tv series made, and we all know how that turned out
I got B3 for free back during epic games store a while back, haven't even touched it. Also got the handsome jack collection for free(still got to pay for the last dlc though which I didn't do)
I mean when you ignore the source and its reasons for success and choose bad actors for almost every character and fail to do claptrap properly what did they expect.
Never played the games, never wanted to but I loved the aesthetic and remember the advertising of what seemed like one of the main guys wearing a mask and holding up his fingers under his chin to simulate 2 guns. Then the film poster came out and I wondered why they would not use such an iconic image?
@@JoseHernandez-xv2bt I know I’ll get backlash but the MCU was the worst thing to happen to movies, tv series and gaming. Whatever happened to standalone or a simple miniseries?

I legitimately can't even fathom what the casting director was thinking. Like there's no way anybody working on the movie actually cared about the source material. They took two female characters who are supposed to be in their late 20s/early 30s and cast ACTUAL SENIOR CITIZENS to play the roles....
What's with the people in the movie industry not wanting or relying little to the source material? It's like they are intentionally crapping on the IP that they are involving in their movies/series.
My head canon is that after the credits, the camera pans out to the real characters sitting on a couch, having just finished watching it and wordlessly get up and walk away.
I like how some people are trying to blame DEI when the new Deadpool has a bi lead with a black vampire and is printing money. I guess the fact that Lionsgate pulled a RoboCop 3 and water down an R-rated property had nothing to do with it.
Strauss: "Come on, fam...ignore the reviews and just, you know, throw some money at us!" Just as a reminder, this is the guy that said GTA Online was *under* monetized...despite it being the single most profitable entertainment product in the history of mankind. And no, that's not an exaggeration.
Mortal Kombat 95 has a pg13 rating and was the first successful video game movie. Which proves good writing can make a movie great regardless of rating. So sure the rating of borderlands would of made more sense to be rated r but in this case a bad movie is a bad movie no adult rating would of saved this film, the casting alone was enough of a red flag.
The generation that loved the humour and vibe of the first game have well and moved on from that tact. The first game came out in 2009, so I woulda been in my mid 20s? Now I'm 40, shits changed man.
@adamdaniel129 First person that comes to mind that could nail it is probably Anthony Starr. But if you're putting him behind a mask it could be anyone that can capture that balance of psychotic humor and just....being a psychopath lol. Honestly, Timothy Olyphant would nail it, too.
I mean to be brutally honest, Borderlands 3 proved the devs had no idea what made Borderlands 1 and 2 so beloved. Why would this movie get it right? Expecting this to be good was blind optimism at best.
The moment I saw they left out Brick and Mordecai for Tiny Tina, without even mentioning how criminally miscast this is, I knew this would be a monumental flop.
As long as companies are not respecting the source material, it will never work out for them no matter what.. Want a video game adaptation to be a hit instead of a flop, pay respect to that same source material... It's as simple as that, but no.. Braindead people within the industry who only care about money will never understand anything.. There's also a bioshock movie coming on Netflix, which i have little to no hope for..
Yeah I really struggle to think of any movie with a more dark and HARD R source material than Bioshock. I mean even human centipede had technology limitations, in Bioshock they turn little girls into slug zombies that suck blood and that's the tamest thing there. The big daddies drill people to death, the core theme of the plot is mind control, Splicers are mutilated, enjoy mutilating and absolutely insane like the reavers from firefly.
In my opinion I think three things were needed for this movie to do better in theaters. 1. Rated R, for the humor and for the gore 2. I think animation may have been a better choice of medium 3. (Most important) FOLLOW THE LORE.
@@yogsothoth0115 Personally, I know this is going to be a bit contentious, but how would you have felt if someone like Joey King, Brianna Hildebrand, Bailee Madison, or Sabrina Carpenter was cast as Lilith? Oh, and 5. Hire someone who directed a Borderlands game, or at least a Gearbox executive (who's not Randy Pitchford) to be your creative consultant.
I think it would have been a better idea to give the IP to, perhaps, Amazon to make a series about Borderlands (If Fallout is anything to go by they can definitely adapt games into series. Plus they are great at extreme violence). In a similar episodic format that "Tales From The Borderlands" took. Have it SET in the Borderlands universe, not have it be based off the games....again like Tales did. Or they could have made it animated to do the game's art style justice
The film release should of been after deadpool and wolverine left theaters. getting bad reviews while a films that came out in theaters that is doing VASTLY better and is still in the theaters is suicidal.
He's got the correct figure, but while he's playing a serious role i can't help but feel like he'd also try some silly stuff in between, but i'd still prefer him either way, plus his comedy is way better...
The brutal reality is probably any other living black man would of been a better Roland. Dave Chapelle would of been a better Roland, Morgan Freeman would of been a better Roland. Kevin Hart literally is about feeling inadequate and has ONLY ONE JOKE that is used over and over and over. "Stop making fun of me being short!" That joke played with Roland who is supposed to be strong and basically the natural leader of the group.
"Talk about pissing your money away. I hope you kids see what a silly waste of resources this was." "He worked really hard on it Grandma." "So do washing machines." -Christmas Vacation (1989)

That's hilarious.
Good ol' Randy Pitchfork, being incompetent as always
I don't think that man can surpass Borderlands 2. He's done.

I'd take that anime adaptation over this live-action garbagefest that idk why it was greenlit for, would have been a marvelous idea if the casting was right, and they stuck to the script of the 1st or 2nd game...
2 was peak. I remember sleeping like 2 hours after waiting for release and going to work dead tired all day waiting to get home and go fuck shit up. Pre-Sequel was still pretty fun. 3 just seemed to be missing something.

we can't get a new Blood game either because Atari holds the rights and doesn't want to do anything with it
General rule of thumb for for Hollywood Movies: a movie has to make at least two and a half times the cost of the movie to be profitable.
Should’ve been an R-rated movie considering Borderlands is an M-rated franchise.
Biggest reason I didn’t see this movie
It was shot to be R-rated and the studio mandated it be edited to be PG13. You can actually tell by some of the editing; in certain scenes the rhythms are off and there are strange cuts between shots that don't match. Clearly something was supposed to go between them (presumably a bit of R-rated violence). I guarantee there'll be an R-rated blu ray release.
@@Bertauthopefully they make an R-rated Extended Cut version on Blu-Ray
I agree that the Borderlands movie should be rated R.
However a lot of rated M games are really more akin to a PG-13 movie as far as objectionable content. Most Halo games for example.
You know something is bad when even IGN can't give it a good review.

This is fantastic news - it shows that people don't want to watch a crappy film just because of the association with the game. If you release a subpar product and try to cash in from name alone, then this is what you deserve.
If filmmakers took the time to understand their target audience and create a faithful adaptation then the situation would be entirely different.

There is so much more to it than just marketing, quality, and word of mouth. It seems like the producers didn't even know what borderlands was, had no idea about the world and characters, and I doubt a single one of them even played the games.
