  • In 1968, The Cowsills' father/manager Bud Cowsill fired their co-producer/writer/arranger/collaborator/mentor Artie Kornfeld. 38 years later, Bob Cowsill and Artie Kornfeld met at long last to talk through what happened.

Years ago I had a nice talk with Artie regarding the whole "The Rain, The Park..." song and how it came about. He pretty much told me what he shares here but he expounded on it by telling me It was literally a make or break situation for the Cowsills. Additionally he explained to me how the group ended up on MGM Records after having been unceremoniously dumped by Mercury Records. I told Artie that this song was amongst my all-time favorites and how I never tire of its amazing production work. He was a bit "well I had to do what I had to do" about it but I suspect he knows just how great the song is. He helped to create a true classic!

@@louisepalanker I haven't seen Artie in years. His son used to come into my little record store. Eventually Artie showed up and introduced himself. I converged on him so fast with my inquiries about "The Rain, The Park, and Other Things". I never even thought to ask him about Woodstock! For me it was all about the Cowsills!

That song was "shamanistic"...yes, I agree. It predicted the people who would be called "flower children."

Thanks for sharing this. I knew zero about Artie Kornfeld. What an amazing man, such a phenomenal person. The Cowsill family is so talented, along with an interesting childhood. It's been an interesting journey reading/listening about their childhood. Their father seemed like such a horrible person. I wonder if he ever confronted the kids and wife about the past and asked for forgiveness. I hope so.

Artie and Bob talking about harmonizing and layering is so true. I’ve heard the The Rain, The Park, etc. since it came out, but listening now you hear all these layers. Artie is a genius, and Bob and the rest of the Cowsills are immensely talented. So good to see the surviving members doing well. They have earned every second of the peace and joy they have now.

I remember hearing their hit song in my early years but never knew who sang it. I've always liked it. Now I'm learning all about the Cowsills and I'm catching up. Great behind the scenes info. I wonder what their lives would have been if their father stayed out of the picture. Thanks for the video!

Kornfeld was the first to layer vocals...hmmm, didn't know that. He was born in '42 while the greatest vocal groups in history were making records during WW-2...The Andrews Sisters?...that was a harmony singing thing. So he arranged music before he was born? Hmmm, this guy can do anything! Well, New Yorkers...they really can.
