    i just wanted to let you know you are the most thorough and experienced reviewer I have seen. You're videos are very long but clearly don't feel that way. Keep up the good work!

    What an excellent reviewer. So many talk, and talk, and talk, without telling us an awful lot. This lady as got the balance spot on. Just bought An Acer R7 after watching her presentation

    Yes, it's usable with the screen raised and parallel to the base, it's a fairly stiff hinge and Acer designed it to be used that way.

    Still got mine in 2019 - it has had a upgrade to 500gb SSD plus 12 GB ram and still going strong such a unique design i have bought and sold plenty of PCs over the last last few years but not this one

    The game is called Guns 4 Hire. It's free in the Windows 8 app store.

    I have this laptop and its a beast I barely ever find myself needing to use the track pad and once I upgrade my ram and switch to an SSD its going to be a beast!

    Had this since launch. Still think its the best looking laptop ever. they recently released a new 13 inch which looks rubbish. Seriously hope they advanced on the original r7 design as i would upgrade with no hestiation.
    Seriously married to this machine lol

    I'll try and take the cover off again for our full written review. To my eye, there are no screws under the rubber feet, but I'll be checking that more closely. It could be plastic clips like Samsung uses, but it feels like something more toward the center. I'm sure I can get it off and the HDD and RAM will then be ripe for upgrades!

  • @mobiletechreview
    @mobiletechreview  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    The two big differences between this and the MacBook Pro non-Retina would be the touch screen/convertible design of the Acer and which OS you'd rather use.

  • @mobiletechreview
    @mobiletechreview  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    We may review the Aspire P3, but it's pretty much the Acer W700 with a new style accessory keyboard. Not a lot has changed. But the keyboard is definitely an improvement. The rest of the machine was very solid from the start.

    While a lot of people are complaining about the lack of a wrist rest, being forced to type with floating wrists helps prevent carpal tunelling that's more acquirable today due to the wrist rest habit. It used to be a problem for pianists and guitarists who didn't level their elbows, wrists, and fingers.

  • @mobiletechreview
    @mobiletechreview  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'd be incredibly amazed if Acer paired the R7's ULV Ultrabook CPU with that high end a dedicated graphics card. They'd need a very different power supply and battery to handle that as well. I could see a completely different model with a similar design though.

    The fact that the mouse pad is closer to the screen is a bonus for me. Why? I am sure this has happened to you too, when you are typing fast your thumb accidentally touched the mouse and you keep typing where your cursor is.... I think this laptop is a right step towards the right direction... I have heard some connectivity issues though....

    The opinion on the trackpad at the back seems to be mainly negative, but for me it's a revolution! I keep hitting the track pad on regular laptops while I type and it annoyingly clicks on something or place the cursor in a random spot. Plus, I'm a big fan of external mice. That feature is a plus for me! :)

    • @MrWARHEAD01
      @MrWARHEAD01 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I do lot of typing as well and i think trackpad being in the back is revolutionary as well.. i hate these big trackpads especially now with windows 8 multi touch options. these are really annoying when you are typing.

      Alexandre Hudon yes, samething here, not hitting the track pad so much, but i love new position because rarely use track pad, always carry a mouse with my laptop or use a touchscreen. So even it without track pad but good price, i will buy it anyway then lol

    Yes, we'll review the ThinkPad Helix as soon as Lenovo gets their review program going. My guess is supply shortages are making them hold back on the review program because they don't want to frustrate buyers who can't find them in stores.

    This laptop looks quite cool. I like the fact that it combines function and form quite beautifully. If Acer equips it with an IPS matt display it would be very close to my ideal laptop.

    Well, Thanks to Lisa, I'll be getting this Aspire R7. xD , Since I always use a mouse, I won't be using the track pad. It was a hard choice between this and the W510 w/dock. Well, Your reviews are awesome, I just love watching your review videos. Thank You.

    The dual hinge is so futuristic it had to take a time machine back to 2007/2008 and take the idea from the incredible desktop replacement notebook, the HP HDX Dragon. Wished they'd come out with a refresh for that awesome 20 inch screen beast.

  • @LuchJimenez

    - Some have said, that the inverted keyboard and touchpad position are uncomfortable, but once you get used to the 15¨ touch screen you don`t need a touchpad any more, so the keyboard results easy to reach.
    - The 2 in 1 versatility and the different positions of the screen are very useful for different situations (a presentation, a lecture, a reading session, gaming, working).
    - Great sound and useful back-light keyboard.
    - A very elegant appearance.
    - I had my doubts about Acer, but the product exceeded my expectations.

    The way the hinge is designed and the heavy duty materials used make me think this hinge will last.

  • @onlinejfk
    @onlinejfk 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Lisa -- I found the 3 hidden screws! On the bottom, there is a long rubber strip at the top, under the hinge -- lift the rubber on the left and on the right sides (don't have to remove the long strip completely) and you will find a torx screw under each. The third hidden torx screw is the other rubber strip (the other strips are hard plastic) directly straight down from the long rubber strip, nearer the bottom. lift this rubber strip off (glues back easily), and voila -- third hidden screw!

    It's all on personal preference. Some people, like myself, want more of a touch screen and less of the touch pad. As for the lack of palm rest, it's just something that you can adapt to. I for one, love the fact that it isn't fully flat when in tablet mode and makes for a better view point. The price is amazing.
    Keep in mind that everyone has a different opinion. I agree with mizwa.

    One other thing, I played with this at Best Buy a few days ago. The screen isn't 100% stiff, but it is MORE than good enough. I loved it and had to fight myself to not walk out with it. If I had a little more "financial flexibility", I would have walked out with it.

    The Asus Zenbook Prime UX32VD has low-mid range Nvidia dedicated graphics. If you live in Europe you can get the Samsung Series 7 Ultra with low-mid range AMD Radeon graphics. Otherwise, you'll looking at the same Intel HD 4000 graphics on most other Ultrabooks.

    There's no active digitizer or digital pen for this model. You can use a capacitive stylus like those sold for the iPad but it's less precise and you'll have to keep your palm off the screen while writing with the stylus.

    I have been waiting for someone to finally review this. Seems little fanfare for such a unique launch. I was hoping you would comment more on your impression of how the trackpad is to use. As you state this is the most controversial part of the design and needs some hands on to actually determine how it works. I am waiting this info before buying. Would love some further info on useability of the trackpad in real life. People also use wireless mice when at a desktop anyways. Thanks for the info.

    Howdy -- Yes I did replace the WD HDD (model # WD5000LPVX) with an Intel 160 GB SSD (SSDSA2MH160G2C1)-- works like a charm! Performance index went from 5.9 to to 7.6 for data transfer, and it's only a Sata II. Two screws hold the HDD cage in place. Very straight forward upgrade, once bottom cover off. Happy Computing.

  • @onlinejfk
    @onlinejfk 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Lisa -- Kudos for your great reviews! In the R7 review, you mentioned you removed the 10 visible torx screws but the back lid did not come off. Have you found out yet what else needs to be done? I know on some of their other models there are 1 or 2 screws hidden under rubber feet. Would like to upgrade HDD to SSD, but can't find any upgrade tips. Thanks

  • @binarybedlam
    @binarybedlam 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't know why people keep complaining about the kb placement, I prefer the pad above the kb like this, I think that's how it should have been all along! I can't stand it when I'm typing and if the back of my palm so much as brushes the track pad, the cursor moves and I'm typing into another sentence, so frustrating! Thats why I've always preferred the IBM style track point. Good job ACER! I do wish it lays flat in tablet mode though, so BOO for that, but I'm still probably getting it w/ i7

    You know, You say that the track pad location is bad, but as someone who always HATED where the track pad was located on laptops. I would always turn it off and just use a mouse to keep from hitting it every time I type something. For that reason alone, I find this design intriguing.

    Great review! Thanks so much! I actually went to Best Buy yesterday and demanded to take it out of the box. Very nice machine from the first look, didn't have enough time to play with it. Don't really give a damn about touch pad, never used it anyway. I will get a Bluetooth mouse if I need to do something precise. Getting used to rest you palms a little differently will be just a matter of time. Very curious if the HDD is replaceable, would like to switch it to 256GB SSD, on info on it the site

    I REAAAAAALLLY like this laptop. I just randomly spotted in in bestbuy today after disconcerning myself with laptops during this long drought of good laptops. Anyway, I was going to get it but apparently, it's horrible for video editing (which i NEED) and gaming (dont need but would be nice). So i was also considering the surface pro. im sure by now you realise im looking for some sort of tablet laptop type computing experience.

    Did you ever get around to taking the back panel off? I just ordered one of these and I intend to swap out the hard drive for a solid state, and I'm debating whether to tinker around inside myself or take it somewhere and pay someone else to do it. Your remarks about it feeling like something was still holding the back in place after the screws were removed makes me nervous about doing it myself...
