As noted in our review this is not a Wacom digitizer & pen, it's N-Trig. The problem is with ArtRage and a few tools therein, the pen works properly in other apps.
I actually use the Duo 13 on my lap all the time. The display angle works well since it's pitched back a bit and I place it in much the same way as a laptop (no need to push it back toward the knees).
Sony has an assembly/disassembly video on their channel. It's not the easiest thing to open up but it's possible. Right now the harder part is finding an aftermarket PCIe SSD (assuming the US model that uses PCIe).
Thank you so much MobileTechReview for this brilliant in-depth review. One of the best reviews I've seen for any device. I only have one complaint: YOU'VE MADE ME WANT ONE SO BADLY!!!
Great review Lisa. I really appreciate all the time and effort you took into breaking the duo 13 down. I have it on order and it's shipping very soon. I'm definitely excited for it!
The Duo 13 has palm rejection and I did rest my hand on the screen at times. Often I have to keep my hand out of the way so you guys can see what I'm doing, and thus I raise my hand. No need to were a glove. This does not have a Thunderbolt port.
I have not had a single WiFi problem with the Duo 13. It's a dream compared to my cranky Vaio Pro. So far, no sleep-drain issues either. Sony has a firmware updater and a WiFi update available and it could be those actually help (these weren't yet available when some folks posted about problems on NBR forum).
It can handle Photoshop very well and the pen works with pleasing precision but you won't get pressure sensitivity for variable line width via pen pressure.
I know it should, but the fixed angle screen always seems to be at the angle I prefer, whether it's on a coffee table or a desk. I like the screen tilted back a bit so it works well for me. It also makes it easier to touch since it's closer.
Depends on whether you want something Ultrabook sized (Duo 13) or a slim and light 15" (Acer R7). And then there's the pen-- do you want that feature? If so, get the Duo 13.
Our US Vaio Duo 13 and Vaio Pro do not come with the neat router that connects to the power adapter. I'm guessing that if in your country you get the router with the Vaio Pro, you'll probably get it with the Duo 13, but check Sony's site to see. Sony hasn't provided any info about unlocking it for use with any carrier's SIM card.
Adobe has been working on N-Trig WinTab drivers for pressure sensitivity for years and they're still not ready to release them. I wouldn't hold my breath. ArtRage and Manga Studio 5 are two alternatives that don't need WinTab.
First and most important: which OS do you prefer? Macs are great, but not so much when running Windows due to meh drivers. From the specs you listed, it's clear the Vaio Fit wins in terms of hardware for the money.
No, it doesn't get terribly hotter when playing CIV V in tablet mode, Sony designed it with a slight air gap between the two halves. You will want to change the default power profile for tablet mode to balanced rather than the lower watt setting for better performance in CIV.
The Duo 13 will support pressure sensitivity for Adobe Photoshop in the near future. At last weeks IFA in Berlin Sony demonstrated both their newly announced Vaio Tap 11 and the Vaio Duo 13 with pressure sensitivity. A product expert from Sony EU explained that all new stylus-models will work with Photoshop and the Duo will be updated to support it. They couldn't specify an exact date, but since the new models are coming out in the fourth quarter of 2013 it shouldn't take too long.
Hey Lisa! First off, thank you for the reviews. Secondly, I'm purchasing the Duo 13 soon, however, I'm torn between which processor to get. Id love the extra GPU power of the i7-4650U with the HD5000, but does it come at the expense of battery life? Battery life is a concern, I'd rather have a bit slower laptop with 4400 graphics with amazing battery life. Thanks!
Tough choice, but the HD 5000 is pretty darned sweet. Check Sony's site since they've been running specials and you might be able to upgrade to 8 gigs of RAM on a build to order for not much money.
You want to run Autocad and a 3D rendering app simultaneously? Get something with at least midrange dedicated graphics (found in 15" and larger laptops). Lenovo IdeaPad Y510, for example.
I think the convertible tablet nature of the Duo 13 makes it too different from the Retina Mac for a smackdown. Maybe the Vaio Pro vs. the Retina 13 (ignoring touch vs. non-touch).
It's always better if you can have dedicated graphics for CAD apps, but they will run tolerably well on the Duo 13 config you mentioned. Sorry but I don't have Autocad so I can't say about pen support- if they say they use Windows Ink APIs/ input then they should work.
This is one of the most comprehensive PC review I've ever seen. The way you present is very practical and straight to the point. I actually learned a lot. I've been considering on getting a new computer and this is on the top of my list. Say how do the Excel program work with the pen?
Hello Lisa, would you mind posting directions to the assembly/disassembly video you mentioned please? The only thing close to it which I can find is this one "What is an Ultrabook? See us build one (VAIO Duo)" but that is a duo 11, not a 13.
It's the same display as the Vaio Pro 13 and the color gamut and black levels are identical. Brightness is a little higher on the Duo, but that's probably panel manufacturing variance more than anything else. sRGB is just about the same as the Vaio Z3, aRGB is lower. But the Z3's terrible viewing angles aren't worth it to me.
You'll get better battery life, a bigger screen and the new Haswell CPU with the Duo 13, yet it's just about the same size as the Duo 11. I'd pick the Duo 13 unless you have a need for more storage or know you'll need more RAM (most folks do fine with 4 gigs).
okay Lady I noticed something you are the most reviewer on TH-cam who ACTUALLY reply to people which is amazing so please don't let me down on this one the thing is I'm in a pretty confusing situation I'm DEFINITELY gettn the PS4 and I wanna get a 51 inch plasma wd the best input lag within my budget and The money left is enough for me to buy an xperia z ultra Now I'm going to college and I'll need sthn to take notes , write docs, watch videos, read books and ....
You're the most concise, well thought out, and detailed reviewer that I've come across. I must admit, in the past I have only been exposed to male reviewers. You are someone I would actually enjoy talking about electronics with and that's a good indicator. Just a nugget of information. The picture on the background at 9:20 is taken from Seaford Head in the UK. The picture shows the Seven Sisters (Beachy Head)
Great review! I noticed you have also looked at the Thinkpad Helix and I was wondering how you would compare the pen experience in terms of how loud it is. One of my primary uses is to take notes in OneNote, with the recording option. I tried a model which used NTrig and the pen clacking was so loud, I couldn't hear the recording. All I would get is the clackity-clack of the pen. I was never sure if it was the pen or the tablet surface that accounted for the clacking. Can you comment on this?
Is the screen as clear for text as on the Duo 11 in brighter surroundings? Noted your comment regarding about 265 nits brightness as against up to 400 for the Duo 11.
I was wondering if you will be reviewing the Toshiba Portege Z10t as I am unable to find any reviews on it. It seems to be a great competitor to the Helix.
Hi Lisa, Been wondering if this or the Intel HD 5000 version can run Crysis 3. Found a video of someone running Crysis 3 on an Intel HD 4000. Although not all the settings were set to low, it still ran between 22-35 fps.
just wondering if you were having wifi issues. a lot of people on forums have mentioned that and that was something to be worried about. Also the half-sleep mode that drains the battery. If you could answer that real quick that'd be great. Thanks!
Thanks Lisa, best reviews on the internet. Will you be covering the Samsung Ativ Q in the future? I was waiting for the release of that but after watching this review I'm considering the Sony.
Hi Lisa. I'm currently running a 2010 Dell Inspiron 17r, and looking to upgrade; Sony is currently rocking the most possibilities I'd consider upgrading to, and this is so far at the top of the list. I have some concerns about the Duo 13's small trackpad and the nonadjustable screen angle, but updating from a much older i5 processor with 6GB of ram to a newer processor but less ram, do you think I might notice a comparative slowdown in the Vaio Duo?
The problem with the Duo 11 was the wires sticking around the back. They solved it with Duo 13 by making it neat. But putting all the USB, SD slots on the back makes it worthless. Just imagining to reach out to the back each time. Duo 11 claimed to play 1080p, but when I installed itunes & played HD content the audio & video were out of sync. Hopefully 3rd time will be a charm.
As always Lisa, great review. This is 1 of the 2 devices that I was eagerly waiting for you to review. The other is the Samsung ATIV Q. Hopefully you'll get that in soon so you can do a side by side compare. As for the Duo, I had dismissed it due to the N-Trig pen. I hated the pen on the Lenovo Thinkpad tablet, but the video is making me reconsider it. Its not dual OS like the Q. Then again with 8 GB ram it has (more than the Q at 4GB) I guess I can install bluestacks and Android for dual OS.
Hey Lisa! Great review! My only issue before buying this great machine is the fact that it doesnt have adjustable angle but as you said in the smackdown video with the pro 13 you can attach it to a tablet stand. Thats a great idea but will it fit into a normal 7-10 inch stand securely? Could you please try it on one of the stands you have for reviewing tablets and let me know? I would really appreciate it.
Thanks a lot for the reply. There are no reviews of it and I wonder how it compares to the Helix. The only disappointing things are that there is no battery in the dock and it has a Y-series CPU.
From seeing another review (while I wait for my own unit to arrive) I can confirm that yes, use of the pen does activate palm rejection. A welcome relief to be sure!
Don't think this was mentioned and not sure if this is normal these days, but the trackpad on the Duo 13 is actually clickable like a button. Personally hadn't seen that before. . .
Hello Lisa, thanks for the great review of this device. I think of buying the duo 13 for university and would like to know if it is fast enough to run some light cad work? and for the boring lessons, will it run command&conquer 3? :D Last Question: Is there anything comparable to the duo 13 (full win 8, 13" or bigger Display with 1080p, Digitizer, Haswell and 8h or more runtime) ? Maybe something a little cheaper? Thank you
From the video, i can't tell if your palm is resting while writing or not. Is the "palm rejection" level acceptable or does this machine get confused while writing with the pen input? Also thanks for your reviews. Really helpful.
Thanks for the reply I am looking to buy one as they are on sale here for $200 less. Lisa did you have any problems with the wifi strength or Sony's customer service?
Hi guys, I bought the vaio duo 13 and im loving it, but the wifi issue is real! The signal is the same in my iphone 5, witch i consider very poor. I compared with my old T serie ultrabook and it got 2 lines while the duo didnt even find my network. I had to buy another antenna for my router to use in my bedroom and im considering buy a tiny usb receiver. If the wifi is very important to you then you should worry, but believe when i say the vaio duo 13 is the best laptop i ever had and i use the adobe combo in it!
I like to do some drawing/coloring on Photoshop and don't really care for pressure sensitivity at all, and now that I have been saving some money for an ultrabook convertible with touch screen, this seems a really nice choice. But I'm still confused, as I'm most-likely gonna go with i7 version, can I choose to have either Intel HD 4400 or 5000 graphics? If so, which one would u recommend for using Photoshop, surfing, streaming video, playing some lightweight games (such as Civ5 for example)
Hi there, think this looks fab but what worries me is the hinge would that over time not work as well or what if a wire comes loose and with it being a high price I wonder how long it will last?? I know they would have thought this through, but now there seems so many bits to everything more things to go wrong.
Hello Lisa, I have the duo 11. My only complaints about it are the battery life, the small keys, the optical pad, and the weak wifi adapter. Do you think it would be worth it to upgrade to the 13 and give the 11 to one of my brothers?
I have had this for several months now and love it. Almost bought a second one as it is now somewhat discounted. watching this today because i love the white version.
anzatzi I did buy the white duo 13 last month--a factory refurb. I just didn't think anyone would make anything nearly as cool for at least a couple of years! I got the 17, 256gb for 1,100 us on amazon
I just bought one of these, I got the 5000 hd graphics and paid a pretty penny for it but I got it to play simcity 5 and some non shooter games. I hope it can still do it at a decent frame rate. How do you think the performance will compare with the one reviewed?
hello. I really would like to know if this machine can handle photoshop and draw in photoshop. I have been looking for a laptop-tablet that can run photoshop and draw on its screen and also be pretty powerful in order to run well the 3ds max 14 as well. I think its a nice machine but i think you told us that it has no drivers. please answer me back. thanks a lot!
Yes, the Duo 13's is as clear for text as the Duo 11, and easier to read since it's a bit larger. It's more than bright enough for indoor use.
As noted in our review this is not a Wacom digitizer & pen, it's N-Trig. The problem is with ArtRage and a few tools therein, the pen works properly in other apps.
Yes, Flash Pro and Photoshop run very well on the Duo 13.
We actually might do a comparison between the Vaio Pro 13 and Vaio Duo 13.
Try disabling power saving in the Intel Graphics settings program.
Yes the display supports rotation and has an accelerometer.
I actually use the Duo 13 on my lap all the time. The display angle works well since it's pitched back a bit and I place it in much the same way as a laptop (no need to push it back toward the knees).
I love you Liz !! Almost 4 years later and this is exactly what I was looking for...
N-Trig worked to make the pen tip quieter when it hits the screen, but it's still a bit noisier than the Wacom pen on the Helix.
Omg ive been waiting to watch ur review for so long on the duo 13
We will review the HP Split x2.
Yes, all modern Windows tablets with active digitizers have palm rejection, and that means you can rest your palm on the screen.
Make sure to download the WiFi driver update from Sony's updater app or their website, it gained me a few bars.
Sony has an assembly/disassembly video on their channel. It's not the easiest thing to open up but it's possible. Right now the harder part is finding an aftermarket PCIe SSD (assuming the US model that uses PCIe).
Recent N-Trig pens like those for the Sony Vaio Duo 11 and Asus Taichi are compatible with the Duo 13. Wacom pens are not compatible.
We might review the Samsung NX, yes.

Personally I'd go with the Core i7 + HD 4400 graphics. It's quite fast enough and the i7 + HD 5000 graphics model is crazy expensive.
Our US Vaio Duo 13 and Vaio Pro do not come with the neat router that connects to the power adapter. No idea unfortunately, since Sony isn't providing any info about the 3G/4G module and US carrier compatibility.
First and most important: which OS do you prefer? Macs are great, but not so much when running Windows due to meh drivers. From the specs you listed, it's clear the Vaio Fit wins in terms of hardware for the money.

My sony duo 13 finally arrived yesterday after a month of waiting, best laptop ive ever owned
If I were using AutoCad I'd get 8 gigs of RAM and the Core i7. Dedicated graphics would be even better, but that's not an option on Ultrabooks.
The Duo 13 will support pressure sensitivity for Adobe Photoshop in the near future. Thanks for the info-- now I know it's not just mine. I'll pass that on to Sony, N-Trig and particularly the folks at ArtRage.
No, the screen angle doesn't bother me, since it happens to be at just the angle I'd put it at if I had a choice.
We asked for a Toshiba Z10t review unit. If Toshiba can get us a review loaner, I'd love to cover it.
Hey Lisa! First off, thank you for the reviews. Secondly, I'm purchasing the Duo 13 soon, however, I'm torn between which processor to get. No, you'd need a Wacom digitizer inside to make Wacom software work. This has an N-Trig digitizer. Competing brands like Ford and Chevy ;)
I think the convertible tablet nature of the Duo 13 makes it too different from the Retina Mac for a smackdown. Maybe the Vaio Pro vs. the Retina 13 (ignoring touch vs. non-touch).

Hello Lisa, would you mind posting directions to the assembly/disassembly video you mentioned please? The only thing close to it which I can find is this one "What is an Ultrabook? See us build one (VAIO Duo)" but that is a duo 11, not a 13.
Lisa, you're the best reviewer. I always watch your reviews. You deal with what we want.
The wintab driver is still not available? Or you can use it for Photoshop now?
Yes, you can use stilus and multi-touch with Photoshop on this.
It's the same display as the Vaio Pro 13 and the color gamut and black levels are identical. Lisa Gade is THE Best reviewer EVER.
Thanks for the review, Lisa. What were your thoughts on the limited screen positions? Is it a versatile enough angle? And is it usable on a lap?
okay Lady I noticed something you are the most reviewer on TH-cam who ACTUALLY reply to people which is amazing so please don't let me down on this one the thing is I'm in a pretty confusing situation I'm DEFINITELY gettn the PS4 and I wanna get a 51 inch plasma wd the best input lag within my budget and The money left is enough for me to buy an xperia z ultra
Now I'm going to college and I'll need sthn to take notes , write docs, watch videos, read books and ....
Hey Lisa, great review. Upon testing this device, have you ever came across a situation where the fixed-angle screen just bugs you?
You're the most concise, well thought out, and detailed reviewer that I've come across. I must admit, in the past I have only been exposed to male reviewers. You are someone I would actually enjoy talking about electronics with and that's a good indicator. My experience with male reviewers has been frustration as a lot of them aren't as informed as you, spend a lot of time filibustering, drink beer to look cool, and spout biased opinions. *cough* Chris Pirillo *cough*
SUBBED! Keep it up
Just a nugget of information. The picture on the background at 9:20 is taken from Seaford Head in the UK. The picture shows the Seven Sisters (Beachy Head)
A lot. It's actually made to "scan" pictures and documents and use an app to adjust their size and orientation.
Lisa, thank you for all your reviews! I hope that you consider coming up with an android/iphone app that covers all your articles and video reviews!
Great review! I noticed you have also looked at the Thinkpad Helix and I was wondering how you would compare the pen experience in terms of how loud it is. Hi Lisa, do you know if the Intel HD graphics with haswell have big differences between them because there are multiple versions now.
When you use the pen does the screen turn off touch sensitivity so your hand doesn't perform any unintended actions while writing?
also I am wondering if the laptop gets hot while playing games like CIV V in tablet mode since the screen essentially blocks those vents.
Thanks Lisa, best reviews on the internet. Will you be covering the Samsung Ativ Q in the future? I was waiting for the release of that but after watching this review I'm considering the Sony.
Hi Lisa, thanks a lot for the great review!
One question: would the SD card stick out from its slot like in the MBAir?
You just made me want this ultrabook.. Good job Lisa!
The problem with the Duo 11 was the wires sticking around the back. They solved it with Duo 13 by making it neat. But putting all the USB, SD slots on the back makes it worthless. Just imagining to reach out to the back each time.

She did mention about the connection around the 18 minute mark
Lisa, Is the black duo 13 keyboard back light even like the pro 13? or just like the white one you reviewed? Thanks
Hey Lisa, just one question. Compare to the Lenovo yoga 13, which is the better ? (Except battery and features, because lenovo isn't haswell)
No, SoundForge isn't pre-loaded.
I would love to see a smack down between the Sony VAIO Duo 13 and the ASUS TX300CA 13.3 Transformer.
Is there an ethernet port on the charger or an ethernet dongle? I've seen it in some pictures but I wanted to make sure
From seeing another review (while I wait for my own unit to arrive) I can confirm that yes, use of the pen does activate palm rejection. A welcome relief to be sure!
Did anyone notice the really bad backlight bleeding on the corner and sides? It even shows up on non dark windows, like in the Note Anytime software.
College wise do you think this would be a better alternative than a retina MacBook Pro 13"? The digitizer does seem useful...
When do you think you'll be able to get a surface pro 2 review? Really anxious!!!
Hey Lisa, are you guys going to review the Samung NX. I know it's a different products category, just wondering.
Don't think this was mentioned and not sure if this is normal these days, but the trackpad on the Duo 13 is actually clickable like a button. Personally hadn't seen that before. . .
Hello Lisa,
thanks for the great review of this device. I think of buying the duo 13 for university and would like to know if it is fast enough to run some light cad work? and for the boring lessons, will it run command&conquer 3? :D
Last Question: Is there anything comparable to the duo 13 (full win 8, 13" or bigger Display with 1080p, Digitizer, Haswell and 8h or more runtime) ? Maybe something a little cheaper? Thank you
From the video, i can't tell if your palm is resting while writing or not. Is the "palm rejection" level acceptable or does this machine get confused while writing with the pen input? Also thanks for your reviews. Really helpful.
Hey Lisa, I was wondering if the screen angle bothered you since it is not adjustable...
Thanks for the reply I am looking to buy one as they are on sale here for $200 less. Lisa did you have any problems with the wifi strength or Sony's customer service?
Hi guys,
I bought the vaio duo 13 and im loving it, but the wifi issue is real! The signal is the same in my iphone 5, witch i consider very poor. I compared with my old T serie ultrabook and it got 2 lines while the duo didnt even find my network.

No this has a standard mSATA SSD, not PCIe.
Hello Lisa, I have the duo 11. My only complaints about it are the battery life, the small keys, the optical pad, and the weak wifi adapter. Do you think it would be worth it to upgrade to the 13 and give the 11 to one of my brothers?
For that price, I bet it was the Vaio Duo 11 and not the Duo 13. But yes, it's great for content consumption.
Compared to the Duo 11, Is the pen better? the drawing experience using Sketchbook Pro, ArtRage, PaintTOOL SAI ?
I have had this for several months now and love it. Almost bought a second one as it is now somewhat discounted. watching this today because i love the white version.
is it upgraded to windows 8.1?
***** I have the carbon black--but for some reason i want the white as well. insane
anzatzi I did buy the white duo 13 last month--a factory refurb. I just didn't think anyone would make anything nearly as cool for at least a couple of years! I got the 17, 256gb for 1,100 us on amazon
Hi lisa i have the same problem with artrage, pencil and a few other tools not working
You know of the Vaio Duo 11 version right?... not sure about the .6 part though :D
I just bought one of these, I got the 5000 hd graphics and paid a pretty penny for it but I got it to play simcity 5 and some non shooter games. I hope it can still do it at a decent frame rate. How do you think the performance will compare with the one reviewed?
