It's the LED backlighting cycling on and off slow enough for the camera to catch it. It happens with a few laptop displays, but the S7's is the most noticeable I've seen in years of doing this.
The reviews on this laptop on Amazon are amazing. They are 5/5 and very in-depth by some savvy people. The same model (except with 128gb SSD) is available in Canada for only $1243.
I reeived this computer wiyh 8Gb ram, 256Gb ssd, and an i7 4500u 1.8 Ghz processor. There's been an excellent sale on this item on Amazon and I couldn't resist. I've been very happy with performance and battery life. The battery life for me has been better that advertised.
I kept this i5 13 inch laptop going for 10 years, loved it so much last year bought the i7 version for £250 used. (unfortunately this failed due to motherboard which im guessing is why it was for sale in the first place). The screen on this was so well made, i wish my current samsung galaxy book pro 360 had the same gorilla glass on front. Great laptop ! Even if you bought it now its still decent!
The screen flickered at max brightness too, in fact much of the video was shot at max brightness. With autobrightness turned off and Intel adaptive power management for displays disabled. It just wanted to flicker no matter what.
I have the first gen version. It is by far the best laptop I have ever owned. The screen being able to fold to 180 degrees makes it really easy and comfortable to use the S7 on your lap because it can move to nearly any position. I would have been nice if they could have found a way to make it go all the way back. My only complaints besides battery life is the power button location, the fan is a bit loud, and the plastic piece between the hinge is a bit sweaky and loose on mine.
Although I use the newest MacBook Air and absolutely love the device and find it hard to fault really. I have to say this device is extremely beautiful to look at, it is one of the best looking devices I have ever seen.
Hey Lisa, I've had the i7 version for about a month and I've found the Dolby settings greatly improved the audio quality. It's still a bit tinny but it allows you to turn the overall volume down. I think the MS Store had a pricing mistake with the i7 version for $1200, but you should still be able to get the i7 one for under $1500 most of the time.
The MacBook Air is a great machine, but I wouldn't say it's the best you can get for the price. I personally prefer a full HD IPS display and (if it's running Windows 8) a touch screen. The Sony Vaio Pro 13 scores pretty high in my book at $1,249.
The backlighting is actually great in the dark. It's biggest problem is in a medium setting, where the letters almost blend into the keys if the backlighting is on all the way. Plus it also depends on what's on the screen. On a mostly white page like TH-cam, the backlighting becomes worse than on a darker or black website. I think the lower backlight settings are a good compromise though.
5:40 i'm using an acer aspire 5943g (2010) right now and they already had fn-controls on the arrow keys back then, so they didn't really "move it". it's acer tradition.
How does the Aspire S7 compare to the Ativ Book 9 Plus in terms of the following? - Build Quality (how sturdy is the aluminum body? Flex, solidity, etc.) - Real life battery usage on bright settings - Pure aesthetics comparison (which one just looks sexier in person?) - Other comparison points you might want to mention Thanks so much for the awesome reviews!
Battery life is the big diff between the first and second gen S7. First was really weak on battery life. The Vaio Pro 13 is a better buy if money is tight.
It will probably be an aliasing effect. Your video camera is sampling the screen at much faster rate than the screen refreshes itself. Thus, your camera is picking up every single refreshes on the laptop screen, which then shows up when replaying...
Have had this for about a month and I am still very pleased. I think it is definitely one of the top ultra-books that are out right now. I like it over the Sony because it is not as flimsy. Also prefer it over the Samsung AB9+ because for the same price you might get a higher resolution screen with the samsung but only 4GB of RAM. The new ASUS ultrabook will be very nice (whenever it finally releases) but probably a bit more expensive for the same specs.
Lisa, thanks for your review on s7-392! Is 6 hours runtime during heavy using? with 100% brightness? Runtime is very important to me. I wonder the details of battery life. Thank you Lisa!
Hi Lisa, I'm going to refresh my devices with an ultrabook this fall-winter. Which one do you think is better? Should I go for a S7 or a Vaio Pro, or switch to a Macbook Air mid 2013? Thank you very much for the reviews.
Hi Lisa, How do rate keyboards among ultra books, which do you consider the best? is there a reference point? btw, I saw S7-391 and the keyboard was so shalllow hope S7-392 is much be er. hope to see soon a review on asus ux301. jossie
Hi Lisa, Thank you for the review. I have been debating over several laptops....This one, the toshiba Kira (i5), lenovo yoga i7/8gb/256, or the Asus XT300 transformer. They all have unique features...I am starting my MBA, and I dabble in photography... Tough question, but in my shoes what would you buy? Thanks!
Hi Lisa!! I am a lil late to the S7 392 party but i JUST got this and i REALLY like it. Only thing is battery life is like 5 hours, i was hoping 6+ but not going to let that ruin the otherwise stellar experience of this beauty! QUESTION: Did you ever hear back from Acer if the S7-391 battery pack would work with S7 392? Your review cinched it for me (great job as always woman!) - how is "cat"? lol thanx! BTC
Could you possibly make a review of the Acer Aspire V7 14 inch? (possibly the 482PG-9884 version) This looks like a very very potent and complete ultrabook even for gaming. A smackdown with the Asus Zenbook ux32vd would be great as well :)
chi , Lisa. wouldu mind doing a new review on the new s7 model 393, the pwm is pretty bad on this laptop, and I've heard Acer fixed the problem on the new model.
Two of them aren't out yet, which makes them difficult to consider. I played this game earlier in the year with the Lenovo Helix and at some point you just can't wait for the "ultimate" machine anymore. It sucks, but the reality is that everyone besides Sony and Apple have been slow to release Haswell ultrabooks, and atm I feel like Acer is at the top for Windows. The Vaio Pro 13 is nice but keep in mind the default is 4gb ram 128 ssd. The 8gb 256 is $1,700+ whereas the S7 is $200-$500 less.
Hey Lisa. I wanted to ask you a question and I hope you'll answer. I want to know if I should get this or the Lenovo Ideapad Yoga 13. I'm just looking for a computer that is fast, light, and portable. And a computer that will stay cool. This computer will be mainly for school, and other time, for watching TH-cam videos. I just wanted to ask this based on your experience with both. :)
I'm needing a new laptop for school this year, I've looked at both your reviews for this and the Asus Transformer TX300... What would your first choice be as a university student?
hello lisa.......I'm an university student recently I am going to buy an ultrabook, and will make a decision between this acer aspire s7 and the apple macbook air...which one would you recommend? The stunning diplay of this S7 is very attractive to me while the macbook air running the stable OSX is also appealed to me.
The way I see touch tech: Are you going to be using your PC somewhere where a mouse is impracticable? And you also can't stand touch-pads? Do you work with graphics or do note taking where a touchscreen/stylus would make your job much easier? If you answered no to all of the above you've got your answer. I was going to go without but I wanted to use my laptop outside away from a table and more importantly not have to play Civ on a touchpad.
Lisa, can you make a video specifically for college students? Idea: Review three different options or your " best choice " for value } absolute bang for your buck for a college student? Pleeeaaaz thank you so much!!!! I'll share it to all my fb friends lol
Okay let me rephrase the question like this. With a $1500 budget would you choose the 392 ($1484) over the 391 ($1169) or save $300 and get the 391? Are the improvements on the new model worth the premium?
Pretty sure the new S7 would smack the any of the old zenbook primes, but the new infinity would definitely trump this S7 cuz the iris pro gpu and general badassness.
Have you had any issues with weak wifi connectivity or the signal dropping periodically? That's a common complaint about this ultrabook and acer's in general.
Lisa, I'm a grad student with about a $1500 (oh how I hate to go that high) but in your honest opinion does the price justify passing on the Acer S7 391 for the 392? I can get the highest spec model on a student discount for about $1500 with 4 years Office 365 after tax. The highest spec Acer S7 391 is $1200 including tax. Also how do either of those models compare to the Sony Vaio Pro 13? Thanks!
any news on the 2nd Gen 11" S7? if I'm going for something light, i would go for a 11"cher, if I were to go for 13"+ and at that price, i might as well aim for Razer blade 14"
Just to be clear I'm no expert, just going simply on what I've learned from reviews such as this one: If performance is your concern go with the Acer or step up to a Sony Duo. For whatever reason(poor cooling?) the Vaio Pro performs worse than it's peers(the i7 even worse than it's i5 peers!). If image quality is your largest concern, like Lisa said in this video, the Sony is more accurate. I went for the Acer myself, but mainly because the MS store pricing mistake.
I'm confused as to how a single SSD could be in a RAID0 configuration? If you want to stripe data you need two or more disks. I'm guessing there's multiple storage chips within the single SSD that stripe the data, or something?
Hi Lisa, I was wondering how this trackpad compared to the lenovo carbon x1, samsung ativ book 9 plus, and asus zenbook ux31a. I tried the trackpad on the acer aspire S7 in a store and I don't know if it was defective, but it was significantly worse than any other ultrabook I have used. What's your recommendation out of the laptops I've listed for the best trackpad?
Please review dell xps 12 with haswell processor, i would love to know its battery runtime, screen quality and graphics power compared with vaio duo 13 :)
hi lisa, i really want your opinion about upgrading my vaio duo11 to win 8.1 or not, i mean is it stable enough or should i wait for the final version, is there any serious bugs.
if Acer would have this tablet solution which we have in Dell XPS 12 I'd definitely go with it BUT...it have not. Lisa which one would you pick? I'm talking about Acer Aspire S7-392 (i7-4500, 256SSD, 8 RAM) and Dell XPS 12 (i7-4500, 256 SSD, 8 RAM). I'm soooo confused!
I'm in the market for a laptop. I'm still not sold on touchscreen laptops. From everthing I've been reading ultra books have not been selling well at all. The question becomes, Is this a better investment versus the Mac Air? Lisa, I just bought an HP laptop with a 1080p display. The color on the screen is horrible. I tried every setting to change the color but everything looks like it is washed out. Do you think I could have gotten a lemon or are they just using a cheap display? When I hook it up to an external monitor the colors are night and day different! The color red is by far the worst, looking like it's sat in the sun and faded. The computer is an HP Envy Touchsmart 15t-j000. What could be wrong?
hi lisa can you review the dell Inspiron 17R i17RM-2258sLV beacuse my dad bought it for my sister off of QVC and i wanted to make sure it was a good laptop. thanks
It's the LED backlighting cycling on and off slow enough for the camera to catch it. It happens with a few laptop displays, but the S7's is the most noticeable I've seen in years of doing this.
I love it when you show the backlight on the keyboard. It's a great little touch.
The reviews on this laptop on Amazon are amazing. They are 5/5 and very in-depth by some savvy people. The same model (except with 128gb SSD) is available in Canada for only $1243.
Not looking for any new Laptop, but I keep coming back for your awesome tech reviews. Thanks for the entertainment :)
Love your reviews, Lisa! Keep up the good work! Been watching them for years now!

Key travel and feel are actually very similar between the S7 and Duo 13. The Vaio Pro 13 has better travel than both.
The Lenovo ideaPad Y410 and Y510 are very sweet, but Lenovo hasn't had a review program for those. Sometimes refreshes don't get much PR love.
The glass on the back is so pretty, I wish they had used that concept on some of their newer models.
Jerry N. ikr I want them to make the screen shine through the back again too
Hey Lisa, I've had the i7 version for about a month and I've found the Dolby settings greatly improved the audio quality. It's still a bit tinny but it allows you to turn the overall volume down.

Thanks Lisa for the review. I also have my own review of the Acer Aspire S7-392 Review.
Thanks for the video! Great Review! One question though.. Does it come with the whole Microsoft works? As in Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Notebook?
Way to go Lisa thanks!

That acer logo in the dark looks hella cool
Everyone is taking their sweet time with these Haswell refreshes. What is wrong with Dell? Where is new Yoga?
Wish I knew, no word from Asus on when the Infinity is shipping.

How do u find the keyboard?
Great review! Is there a possibility of doing a review of the latest samsung ativ book 8 in the future?
It comes with a faux suede gray slip case, no sheet battery.
Samsung ativ book 9 plus vs acer aspire s7
Please please please!
Please review the Acer S3-392 when it's out!
Lisa you should turn up the display brightness because you see some flickering in the screen.
Could you possibly make a review of the Acer Aspire V7 14 inch? (possibly the 482PG-9884 version)
This looks like a very very potent and complete ultrabook even for gaming.

great review for a great ultrabook!

Damnit, debating if I should get this or a macbook air. MBA is $300 cheaper, and I might wait for the haswell version to come out. Possibly 1080p?
it's perfect, the design is simple and elegant, system is on the top but the price O___O!!!
You'll have a Vaio Pro 13 vs. Aspire S7 smackdown in a day or two.
acer been stepping up their game lately
Hey Lisa. I wanted to ask you a question and I hope you'll answer. I want to know if I should get this or the Lenovo Ideapad Yoga 13. I'm needing a new laptop for school this year, I've looked at both your reviews for this and the Asus Transformer TX300... What would your first choice be as a university student?
I don't believe there's a matte option for the S7.
Great review

No, 6 hours at 60% brightness (which is quite bright).

The backlit keyboard was very good in the dark and low light I thought. Not too blinding
It would be awesome if you could do a review of the new Dell xps 12 with Haswell!
This thing is gorgeous
Just to be clear I'm no expert, just going simply on what I've learned from reviews such as this one: If performance is your concern go with the Acer or step up to a Sony Duo. For whatever reason(poor cooling?) the Vaio Pro performs worse than it's peers(the i7 even worse than it's i5 peers!).

Hi Lisa,
I was wondering how this trackpad compared to the lenovo carbon x1, samsung ativ book 9 plus, and asus zenbook ux31a. I tried the trackpad on the acer aspire S7 in a store and I don't know if it was defective, but it was significantly worse than any other ultrabook I have used. Watching this prices from other manufacturs i think the macbook air is the best ultrabook you can get for the price dont you?
Please review dell xps 12 with haswell processor, i would love to know its battery runtime, screen quality and graphics power compared with vaio duo 13 :)
honestly, i think the vaio pro, zenbook and the samsung series 9 are the only ultrabooks to consider
hi lisa, i really want your opinion about upgrading my vaio duo11 to win 8.1 or not, i mean is it stable enough or should i wait for the final version, is there any serious bugs.
I would love to see New Dell XPS 12 Haswell review
Hi Lisa!!! Could you plz review the Sony Vaio Fit 14?
I am looking for a laptop where I can record music but don't know if I am looking in the right areas any help?
You should show the power chord!
if Acer would have this tablet solution which we have in Dell XPS 12 I'd definitely go with it BUT...it have not.
Lisa which one would you pick? I'm talking about Acer Aspire S7-392 (i7-4500, 256SSD, 8 RAM) and Dell XPS 12 (i7-4500, 256 SSD, 8 RAM).
I'm soooo confused!
Thanks Lisa
The Aspire S7 is a little faster and definitely lighter and thinner than the Yoga 13.
Do you know any ultrabooks or laptops that are good for art( drawing, specifically on the touchscreen) and with regular school work?
factor the price. It's not like you have a choice between the two. There's a significant price difference.
FYI, that is a real miniDisplay port, I'm using it now for a second screen.
I'm in the market for a laptop. I'm still not sold on touchscreen laptops. From everthing I've been reading ultra books have not been selling well at all. The question becomes, Is this a better investment versus the Mac Air? Is touchscreen on a laptop really going to become the norm? or is this a half baked attempt on the part of Microsoft to capitalize on the touch craze? I've never owned a Mac. It's just that at $1,400. My concern is making the right choice, regardless of OS. Thoughts?
Full HD + IPS , the best screen display!
Do you have any chromebook reviews?
was your camera battery low? Could that have aected quality or is it just my display?
Man! You could make one kickass gaming / media desktop for $1700!
Lisa I am dreaming of an Acer S7 392 vs. Sony Vaio Pro 13 Smackdown.
hi lisa can you review the dell Inspiron 17R i17RM-2258sLV beacuse my dad bought it for my sister off of QVC and i wanted to make sure it was a good laptop.
thanks
Lisa, does the Acer S7 392 have an HD webcam?
Does it have a graphics card that can play sims 3 smoothly?
Can you do a review for the acer aspire v7 428pg. There is like not one single video on the internet :(
if you increase the brightness the flickering on screen will stop
