Right now there are very few Haswell models out in Ultrabooks: Vaio Pro, Vaio Duo 13, Acer S7-392 and the Macbook Air. I'm sure more models (and likely some at lower price points) will be out by year's end.
Ultrabooks with Haswell will have touch screens because Intel requires that for the "Ultrabook" label. For standard size laptops, they won't necesarily have touch screens, for example the Asus ROG G750 we just reviewed has a Haswell quad core, Windows 8 but no touch screen. There will eventually be less high end models with Haswell, but companies tend to want to launch their flagships first.
As I mentioned, the Sony pre-built price for the i7/8 gigs/256 gig is higher than the Acer, but the base model is cheaper. In the US, it's cheaper to customize and build to order the Pro 13 than going with the pre-built models if you want the upgrades right now.
I have a light touch so the Sony display doesn't bounce all that much, but the Aspire S7 has a very firm hinge with a design focus on preventing display bounce.
I had a first gen. Acer S7 391 and found a really good deal on a Sony Vaio pro i7-4500u, so I traded the s7 in for the vaio after I saw this review. Great review.
I've had both laptops and I stuck with the Acer. The Sony Vaio was poorly built, had MAJOR WiFi connectivity issues, and the touch pad was dysfunctional. I should have listened to all of the negative reviews that I read about it, but I needed to try it for myself. Aesthetically speaking, it is absolutely gorgeou, but that would be the best thing. I've owned 2 Sony laptops prior to the Pro 13, and it was always the same thing. The laptops both had trackpad issues and the BRAND NEW laptops would freeze up. I started getting the blue screen after a month of owning the second laptop. Sony constantly fails with the Vaio line of laptops. The Acer is not without its own issues, but they are bearable. The only problem with the Acer would be the keyboard. If you have big hands, it's not for you. Also, the Caps Lock key was a problem for me, but after two months of use, I got used to it. One thing that is apparently a major difference is the model number for the Acer laptop. I have read about the 391 model having numerous issues. I opted for the newer 392 model. With the Acer, I was able to get 8 GB of RAM, 256 GB SSD, and an i7 processor for $1599+tax. The Vaio with the same specs costed the same but with the $100 discount, it came to a total of $1499+tax. I needed a laptop that was ultra-portable and stylish, and the Acer definitely did it for me. The extra $100 for a well built laptop was quite worth it. This was my first Acer laptop and I was a bit sceptical about owning it, but I am happy I tried it. It's a great little laptop and even comes with a beautiful complimentary laptop sleeve. Kudos to Acer for this product.
You don't really need a discrete/dedicated GPU for league, the haswell IGPU should be good enough. What other stuff are you going to do on it?Drawing,programming,3d modeling, video and photo editing, normal web surf, gaming? Oh and what i7 do you want?Ultralow voltage or mobile(normal)? It depends on your usage. If you gonna need high performance, then a few good laptops worth mentioning are : Razer Blade, Samsung Ativ Book 8(awesome battery life),MSI GS70,etc. But an ultrabook should do just fine.
i like your voice. very clear and steady voice to listen to. do you think that, generally speaking, the haswell core i7 CPUs run hotter than the 3rd gen i7 CPUs (the mobile versions of the i7 that is...)?
Hey Lisa! Thanks for the awesome review. I haven't seen an Acer S7 in person yet, but the Sony just feels right. One question - I've seen comments about it getting hot. Hve you experienced this at all? Also, any issues with the pointy corners? Thaks for your help!
Hi Lisa, A detail i find very important, is screen wobbling. I ve tested the Sony and whenever you use the touchscreen it wobbles all over the place. Its just too heavy and the hinge is not strong enough. How does the acer perform on this particular detail? Thanks Regards and congrats on a great review.
Lisa, I priced the Sony Vaio Pro 13 i7 (with the discounts they are running now) and it came out around $200.00 more than the Acer S7 392. In a way it seems the Acer S7 is a better value. What do you think?
Hi Lisa, another great video, so thanks for sharing. A quick question for you. I am in the UK and I am about to place an order for a machine of this type (Sony Vaio Pro) - however, I was interested in the Samsung Ativ Book 9 Plus with its QHD+ Resolution. Do you know when you are likely to be able to review one of these - as this machine could be the one that becomes my next machine. Ultrabooks, by definition, bring a bit of compromise to computing but the Samsung Ativ Book 9 Plus ... Well?
Hello Lisa, really nice review as always. I just wanted to know if you are planning to review the Samsung Atvi Book 9 Lite or not, if you could please then that would be great! :)
It didn't seem like Sony was the winner. Acer is brighter I think Lisa said 350 nits. Who won in performance Lisa? Besides price which one is more powerful and with more features under the hood? Lisa, you have the best reviews hands down! thank you and please keep it up!!!
Hey Lisa Could you please review the Samsung Ativ book 9 lite? At 799 it seams to be a really nice alternative to all those super expensive ultrabooks with a bit less of a premium feel. Should be great for the back to school crowd, in case it performs well
I am at a loss here....why would acer not include function keys....I use them quite a bit! I just priced the viao pro through Sony, and they come out at the same price. I really like the lenovo yoga, but not sure if without the haswell processor would really be worth it right now. I am starting an MBA and and am a photographer by hobby...between the three would you say the yoga 13 holds it's own, get the sony, or wait? Thanks!
Hi Lisa, love from Venezuela you are the best!! :D I was wondering. if apple lauches the new macbook pro with haswell pross, do you think theyll be at the same price or the could be cheaper or the pther way around? I would really appreciate the help!! LOVE YOUUUUU!!!!
Not truely full day battery yet so, would pluging it into HDMI port with only external display on gives me full day without buying slice battery? I really loves to carry just the laptop and leave the brick at home.
Outstanding review, For Intel 7 , 4th gen CPU, with 256GB SSD and 8GB sony cost $250 more at relatel ( at $1799). Sony has better display spec at 95%sRGB , comape to Acer at 72%. I plan to use the ultrathin for processing my picture using Adobe PS , lightroom and write travel blogs. Any advice on which to buy ?
Hey Lisa! I know that this is off topic from "Sony" and "Acer" machines, But i was wondering if you know anything about whether "Apple" will be releasing a new generation Macbook pro this year. Thanks. -Rhys (otherwise know as Daryl haha) P.S. Great review! :)
Actually Lenovo released its new S-Series about 2 weeks ago. These are ultrabooks around the same price point. You may want to google thinkpad S440 here ;) Iwould love to see some review, because I cant find one in the internet
Hey, I am getting the battery sheet and warranty free with the Sony Vaio pro 13. Does this make the deal worth it compared to the S7? It costs 920 GBP, compared to 860 GBP for the S7. Is it worth spending 40 GBP upgrading to 8GB RAM?
okay guys i have the sony vaio pro 11.. It is a beautiful machine and i love it. However, the backspace is a bit stuck in meaning that a portion of it has already lost its elasticity. The wifi is quite troublesome, i have done windows update and vaio update, you still get disconnected roughly about 3 hours after you close it (not turn off) which forces you to restart the system. Wifi is also noticeably slower than my PC using medialink adapter.
Great review looks like the separation between the brands are getting narrow. Lots of nice products lately. Looks like the best thing to come out so far that's Apple related will be a movie staring Ashton Kutcher
I've read that the WiFi issues are solved with a new update, but my biggest concern is still the fan. Can any Vaio Pro 13 user tell me if the fan makes a lot of noise. Like does the fan get annoying when you're in a quiet area.
I think if you are looking for entry level for haswell sub $1300 the Sony is way to go (you could also argue 3rd gen units may be even better value) however when you start to max out specs the Acer seems to be a better value especially if you are eligible for MS student discounts. I was looking for a light, cool, powerful unit with an i7, 8 GB RAM, and 256 GB SSD, no compromises. The Vaio Pro 13 runs hotter, is more expensive, and does not feel as sturdy/solid as the S7.
The weight difference between the Sony and the Samsung seems significant on paper. That's a reason I'm considering the Sony. Add the slice battery, which makes it comparable to the Samsung in weight but beats the Samsung in battery life by some 3 hours, and the Sony becomes pretty compelling. Care to comment?
Modern carbon fiber paint technology is designed to adhere to the fibers and therefore eliminate unsightly scratches, even to a better extent than painted aluminum. Carbon fiber is not only light and strong, but also fairly impervious to visual damage, even after repeated use or light abuse.
Natalie, get a tablet if your needs are that basic. Something like a Nexus 7 + a Chromecasts should fit all those specific needs. After that, maybe get yourself a cheap netbook for when you need to type up stuff.
One note about Sony Vaio: top side might be made from some fancy, ultra durable material (which looks like plastic, btw), but it is covered with matte black paint that SCRATCHES VERY EASILY. Just be warned - one trip in a bag and you'll have a lot of ugly looking scratches all over the to cover.
I have the Acer Aspire S7 and it's really loud because of it's Dolby system. You won't need speakers if you decide to watch a movie or videos with family or friends. Overall it's pretty good. I'm actually impressed.
The Vaio's Disdplay is much better. It's got a much better color gamut range over the Aspire. She talks about both display's at 4:55, you can even tell from the video how much better the Vaio looks over the Aspire.
It cost more to add touch components as well as higher resolution IPS panels that both the Acer and Sony have. Build quality and materials are at par if not more then the mac so one would expect to pay a bit more for the windows machines. The TN panel is very disappointing for the haswell powered air. Not a good time to buy Apple with MB/heavy/running Ivy and air using older TN tech. Really at this time, the air is not a fair comparison.
the sony has a hip and cool kind of look to it whereas the samsung has more of a business/professional look. personally i just liked the samsung better. by the way, the samsung has a bluish black color around the keyboard so make sure to check it out because some people may not like that color but i think it's ok. i'm sure many people will prefer other ultrabooks like sony, acer, or even a macbook air.
I bought a sony ultrabook with a solid state hard drive, 1 year ago. I had my final exam and one day before the exam, when I was studying, the computer started freezing, shutting down, and when I would reboot, I got a message, "operating system not found". I reinstalled every piece of hardware, updated all the drivers, ran hard disk diagnostics, ram diagnostics, updated bios, removed battery put it back in. tried changing the power options - so it wouldn't go to sleep, uninstalled every single third part software (adobe, firewalls), ran virus scans, malware scans, all this before my exam. This POS would still freeze and shut down or I had to force it to shut down. I would never buy another solid state computer or a sony computer for that matter. I ended up throwing the thing on the floor and breaking it.
I agree with TripOver. You should cover bloatwares from both companies. I have the Sony Viao Z and I love everything about it except the bundled software. Totally useless
yeah, the sony is definitely lighter but the samsung is light enough for me to carry around. also, i don't really care much about the battery life because i am almost always inside a building and a power outlet is very easy to find. but for people who travel a lot, they may prefer the sony for better battery life. also, this is subjective but to me the samsung's screen looked much clearer and brighter compared to the sony and just has a nicer feel overall.

Yes we'll review the ATIV Book 9 Lite. It should be coming in soon.
It's uncanny how you always have the reviews on exactly what I'm looking for........you are awesome.....Thanks

It's due out mid to late Sept., some sometime around then.
Yes, we'll review the ATIV S Neo.
The display refresh is visible to the camera's sensor more on the Acer than on the Sony. The naked eye can't see this, but the camera can.
Excellent look at them both Lisa, well done as always xx
I noticed in the comparison video, there seemed to be lots of background noise on the Acer's screen, where as the Sony was clear and stable.
Lisa can you do a review on the acer V5 touch Pentium model i just got one and was wondering what you think of you
One of the better review out there.
A little on touch screen would have helped further.
hi lisa,
when will u review the new alienware gaming laptops (alienware 14,17 and 18)?
Lisa have you experienced any wifi issues on the Sony machine?
Any idea when you will have a review on the ATIV 9 Plus by Samsun :]
okay guys i have the sony vaio pro 11.. It is a beautiful machine and i love it. However, the backspace is a bit stuck in meaning that a portion of it has already lost its elasticity. Lisa, what is your top 5 ultrabook or laptop's keyboard
Great review looks like the separation between the brands are getting narrow. Lots of nice products lately. Looks like the best thing to come out so far that's Apple related will be a movie staring Ashton Kutcher
AGREED ! What I really want to do is connect an external gpu through the thunderbolt port for when I wanna game at home
good day lis!, why does the display on acer s7 flickers on the video? at 06:13. TIA
I've read that the WiFi issues are solved with a new update, but my biggest concern is still the fan. Can any Vaio Pro 13 user tell me if the fan makes a lot of noise. Like does the fan get annoying when you're in a quiet area.
i need help please, i cant drag my files anymore, i want to move files from one folder to another, but it doesnt work anymore, please help
Why is the Acer screen flickering while Sony's isn't? Sony has definitely better colors but are there other issues whit Acer' s screen?
I think if you are looking for entry level for haswell sub $1300 the Sony is way to go (you could also argue 3rd gen units may be even better value) however when you start to max out specs the Acer seems to be a better value especially if you are eligible for MS student discounts. Why are Ultrabooks so expensive? I feel like you could get a gaming laptop for the same price or at least a notebook with dedicated graphics.
can you add if it's compatible with digital pens?
Eh. I'd rather go for the Haswell MacBook Pro when it comes out. Great review, Lisa!
Is it just me, but I don't know why the Pro 13 seems to be a lot thicker? Could be the color or the design but it just looks so much more bulky.
Please do a XPS 12 Haswell review.

Which is best for gaming? can you plz reply :)

Carbon fiber or glass... Which won't break I'd I drop it...
Dropping a few words about bloatware would have been nice. Both companies are quite notorious for their dubious software preinstalled.
great review !
Helpful video. Thank you.
why is the display flickering on acer?
Flickering on Acer is.simply an in-sync of the scan rate of they display you are viewing and that of the Acer.
One note about Sony Vaio:
top side might be made from some fancy, ultra durable material (which looks like plastic, btw), but it is covered with matte black paint that SCRATCHES VERY EASILY.
Just be warned - one trip in a bag and you'll have a lot of ugly looking scratches all over the to cover.
I wanna know if those laptops were purchased just for laptop reviews
The companies probably sent it to her.
I bought the Sony Vaio Pro 13, I had to return it back. The fan noise is too loud, but the Screen is the best.
which speaker is louder?
I have the Acer Aspire S7 and it's really loud because of it's Dolby system. You won't need speakers if you decide to watch a movie or videos with family or friends. Overall it's pretty good. I'm actually impressed.
Ashkan Ahmadi hows the battery on web browsing or just watching videos. Thinking about getting the acer
No idea when Apple will released updated Haswell MacBook Pros or desktops for that matter. They're good at keeping secrets ;)
which display is better? vaio or aspire?
The Vaio's Disdplay is much better. It's got a much better color gamut range over the Aspire. She talks about both display's at 4:55, you can even tell from the video how much better the Vaio looks over the Aspire.
acer have full hd+ ips screen
Enjoy the moment and make a purchase when you need it. Products will always be outdated soon after release the way technology is advancing.
so is sony good for college ?
It cost more to add touch components as well as higher resolution IPS panels that both the Acer and Sony have. what about the razer 14
What is your point exactly? Have I imagined the scratches on my Pro 13? No, there are there - no matter what the wiki says.
the sony has a hip and cool kind of look to it whereas the samsung has more of a business/professional look. personally i just liked the samsung better. by the way, the samsung has a bluish black color around the keyboard so make sure to check it out because some people may not like that color but i think it's ok. i'm sure many people will prefer other ultrabooks like sony, acer, or even a macbook air.
Love ur videos
or the capturing device being used for the video.
I heard the sony had some wifi issues has anyone had any?
I ended up throwing the thing on the floor and breaking it.
can you recommend a laptop for designing?
Keep in mind the fully loaded 256GB SSD Acer S7 is like $1480 or something on Microsoft's store, atm.
I agree with TripOver. You should cover bloatwares from both companies. I have the Sony Viao Z and I love everything about it except the bundled software. Totally useless
It's just the difference between the refresh rate of the screen and the camera, in real life, you won't see any flickering.
Made an order on a Sony with i7 and 256 gb ssd (was a free upgrade from 128 :D)
yeah, the sony is definitely lighter but the samsung is light enough for me to carry around. also, i don't really care much about the battery life because i am almost always inside a building and a power outlet is very easy to find. but for people who travel a lot, they may prefer the sony for better battery life. also, this is subjective but to me the samsung's screen looked much clearer and brighter compared to the sony and just has a nicer feel overall.
Thanks for that. I'd go for the Sony with i7 and 8 meg and live with the flex.
wonderful. thank you.
Ok who win?
my friend's s7 first gen bent quite a lot when he put inside his bag. go for sony~
You pay a premium for the form factor.
maybe i have Sony VAIO Pro 13
Very good review:-):-):-):-)
If only the MacBook Air 13" had a 1080p touch screen display. I'd just get that then install Windows 8.1
Vaio is a much better choice
I dont think there will be much, as they are thin. Really.
So sony wan us to all have bend laptops?
Sony has NFC on pro, 13
Acer aspire s7 is 2mm thiner then yoga 3 pro
