Renault Megane E-Tech EV60 - Any Good? (ENG) - Test Drive and Review

  • Renault Megane E-Tech is a quirky EV, and I really like it. The electric Megane is shorter than the Megane 4. and even the Megane 3. It has a longer wheelbase, it’s higher, but narrower. Strange, but then it’s an EV on a new platform. Megane E-Tech can mean either the fourth generation plug-in hybrid or the fifth generation EV. The electric Megane E-Tech comes in EV40 and EV60 variant, which is exactly what you think - battery size expressed in kWh. The electric motor power output is 130 and 218 hp respectively, and the range is up to 300 or up to 450 km respectively.

    I've been looking forward with anticipation for your review of the Mégane E Tech. From other reviews that appeared before yours, I thought this was probably one of the best in class, compared to the ID 3. The issues are small, but not enough to change my view. It's a good looking car with a good specification!

    6:00 As someone who has driven a Dacia, the media stalk is far away from the wiper stalk. You can't confuse the two, nor accidentally use the media one. As for the gear selector, it seems to be at a sufficient height to not be confused with the wiper stalk either.
    Again, I'm not saying that it's a particularly good idea; just that confusing the three isn't as easy as one might think.

    Marek, great review, nicely balanced. Almost ordered a Cupra Born V2 but then came across the Megane E Tech. Not really seen any bad reviews on the car but the top UK version, the Launch Edition, is basically the Techno with the sound system and rear view camera and all versions get the 9” infotainment screen, that is 9” landscape not portrait so less than half the size. I know the French are not keen on us Brits but this is taking it too far.
    Despite this, eventually got to test drive a UK Techno. Loved it. Smaller screen wasn’t such a problem as you rarely look at it whilst driving as you can have sat nav on main display. Rear view not brilliant but no deal breaker. Before I ordered had to view your video again to confirm my findings, so thanks Marek. Should be on my driveway before end of the year.

      I looked into the 9” side screen issue with UK cars. Turns out Renault are not making the larger 12” because the screens need to be built as a complete unit but in reverse for the UK. Renault may release it with their Sport dual motor version of the same car, coming later if UK sales are good.

    • @NorthernSoulieKTF
      @NorthernSoulieKTF 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@VeitchyVeitch Sold it. Lovely car, so long as you don’t go too far. You lose too much range in cold weather (180 miles on a full charge), never reaches claimed charging rate. At least once/twice a month I do a trip of about 260 miles. There in lies the problems I encountered. Lack of chargers, broken chargers, queuing waiting for a vacant charger (enviously looking at a dozen or so empty Tesla chargers) and poor etiquette from too many uneducated EV owners. Three driving modes but only used Eco on the long journeys. I lost all the fun out of driving. Other Megane owners may possibly tell you differently, but this was my experience. Even though I lost a lot of money in those six months of ownership due to EV depreciation.
      If you don’t mind, on occasion, waiting 20 minutes or more for a charger to come free, walk the length of the car park to get into the coffee shop in the services. Constantly looking at your app to see the state of charge, repeat the walk back to your car when your at 80%, and commence your journey again, knowing you could have a similar experience at your next charging stop, go for it. I even planned to hire a ICE vehicle for a road trip we planned in the summer. That’s when I realised how crazy the situation was.
      Charge at home, keep local, EV’s are great.
      In summary, great car. Don’t expect to get claimed figures on charging rate and range. EV charging infrastructure in UK not ready for the volume of EV’s. Expect poor depreciation and increased insurance costs or wait. I moved to the Austral hybrid. Next time your in the Renault showroom, have a look at it. It’s an impressive vehicle. Mixed urban and fast motorway driving, 52% of the total mileage I am in pure EV mode over the six months I have had it.5 minute stop to refuel and I am good for 600 miles. More importantly I thoroughly enjoy driving again.

    Hi Marek, great review. I have 2 questions:
    1- you mentioned about the problem of the charging network in Poland not notified if in the navigation system, could you please clarify that?
    2- is there any app for charging network in Poland? Like nextcahrge but more accurate? For example next charge does not show Orlen/Tauron charging point
    Thank you

    • @MarekDrivesENG
      @MarekDrivesENG  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      1. In order for the OEM navigation to plan charging along the route, there must be an agreement between the sat nav maker and the charging network. They need to exchange API or something so that you can see if the charger is available, what's the output, etc. In case of the state-owned charging network like Orlen and Lotos (I don't know about Tauron, because this was the first time I used them at the hotel) they are reluctant to work with private companies. It seems like politically-nominated decision makers don't want to make any decisions, for which they may be sacked. It's better NOT to make any decisions. So-called "management by waiting". Wait long enough, and any problems will become irrelevant :)
      2. You are right, there is no single app to pay for charging in Poland, because of the above. You need to have a separate app for Orlen, separate for Lotos, separate for Tauron. And don't expect the petrol station employees to speak English or know anything about the DC charger. They have no clue. The safest bet is to stick to Greenway (and Ionity, which has like 3 HPCs in Poland). And use PlugShare and ABRP.

    The claimed range (450 km) and consumption (16 kWh) don't correspond, because they have to add the losses in electric energy you get everytime you are charging. So you are paying for this on the charger, but the car doesn't really consume that much on the street.

    Interesting choice to compare German fuel prices with Polish electricity prices, because Germany also has the most expensive electricity in Europe. So comparing German fuel to German electricity prices the gap isn't quite as bit anymore, but still worth it, especially considering that you also don't have to pay vehicle tax until 2030 for EVs in Germany. • @MarekDrivesENG
      @MarekDrivesENG  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Ariya (sounds like someone couldn't decide on "area" vs. "aria") is an SUV, and therefore deserves a larger battery to haul the family on vacation. The Megane E-Tech is a city hatchback, hence it's not designed for the long-haul duty.
      And I agree you can take a 1992 Renault Twingo and drive it for 500-600 km on a single tank, and if don't mind limited comfort, you can drive it on the motorway as well.
      I felt more confident about the Megane E-Tech's range, than I did in the VW ID. 3/4, so the 60 kWh battery pack is fine. They have a lot of EV experience and knowhow in the Alliance with the Leaf, Zoe, Fluence, iMiEV, and it shows.

    Great review, thanks for showcasing a lot of details no one else did. It helps get a more complete idea of the product. The car looks interesting, but it still seems like every manufacturer is trying to figure out which solutions make sense and which don't - gear selector mess, for example. For the price of 50k (entry-level Model 3 price), the attention to detail is not there and the efficiency is not groundbreaking, so room for improvement there as well. What kind of battery does it have and are there limitations for charging to 100% on regular basis?

    I think Renault have done quite well with this. It certainly has some showroom appeal, and I'm sure the sharp styling will win it some fans. I'm also glad they've gone for a more hatchback form factor over a SUV, and not quirky just for the sake of it.
    I do wish that car companies would stop it with the door handles though, just one more thing that can break for a negligible gain in range. That load area also looks a bit awkward, but for grocery shopping and light duties I guess it's fine.

    Let's assume the fully loaded Megane will mostly be bought by Renault dealerships and media offices - this is my poor attempt to defend the offer by Renault. Otherwise, I don't see any reason to consider it compared to an entry-level Model 3. Tesla is more advanced, and more efficient, has better software, better charging infrastructure, far better performance, better resale value, a better sound system and an airy cabin with a glass roof. Also, the curb appeal is much higher with a Tesla. At this point, it is good to remind that the old issues reported by the media of Tesla's poor reliability are long gone (mostly:). I would even argue you would get far better support from tesla service compared to Renault's with a completely new model, with new 3rd party software and new hardware. Tesla is not perfect, but it's a better value than the top-of-the-line Megane. But I am not objective, so yeah :P
