Love my Megane. Got it back i november 2022, no problems at all. I have driven around 28.600 miles (46.000 kilometers) her In Denmark. It takes months to get to know the car, but it is the best car I have ever had😊

How long does it last on a charge and how much money please , may get one on notability but it's an automatic , I hear the stearing and breaking isn't very good ?

    • @Nomanspie
      @Nomanspie 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

@@Kirkscrustykippers the steering and handling is excellent, breaking is good as it's one of the lighter EVs. Not sure why you would think it wasn't very good. Whoever told you that has never driven one.
Official range is 280 miles on a charge. Real life range is more like 200 to 250 miles depending on how you drive it and the weather conditions.
For a motability car its a great option.

I have the iconic in blue and it really suits the contrast gold blade detail. The extra tech is nice especially the Harmon Kardon sound system which really adds to my drive enjoyment. I’ve done just over 1000 miles since December and it’s been by far the most comfortable and solid car I’ve owned..

Had my Iconic since may 23 and it has been a blast so far (20000 KM). No problems of any kind. The drive is brilliant and I love the interior, especially the two screens (I live in Denmark and have the large center screen). The range could be better and the charging speed has never been even close to 130 KW as promised by Renault, but I never felt restricted by either of them in real life. You cannot go wrong with this car if you are looking for a compact EV.

Thank you for this beautiful ode to the Renault Megane E-Tech and I am so sorry that you have to hand it in. I 'm a happy owner of a Techno in the Netherlands for almost a year and I love the car. I have been a Renault fan all my life. I learned to drive in my mother's Renault 4. My first own car was a black Renault 5 GT turbo phase 2. I had a Megane Estate and the last Renault before the Techno one was a Clio 4 dci dynamique.

Had our Launch Edition for over a year, and NEVER had a problem with the alarm. Get the dealer to fix it.

  • @Kyle-ki1wg
    @Kyle-ki1wg 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    Had mine one year.
Overall really happy with it. Better than the id3 by miles.
Things I thought would annoy me based on other reviews but have not been an issue at all.
    - deep boot. It actually is really good, i have two toddlers and can fit everything i need including a double pram
    - shifter, wiper stalk, and radio controls on one side. Never got them mixed up, really easy to use
    - rear window view. Never been a problem
    Things i love
    - interior quality
    - how it drives (apart from one niggle)
    - ride quality ( I have the smaller wheels)
    - boot space
    - mmi is excellent. But sometimes a bit flakey and susceptible to interference
    - row of buttons
    - storage compartments in cabin
    - the money it saves me on fuel
    - being able to preheat and defrost the car in winter
    - air purify setting is a life saver for hay fever sufferers, got it assigned to the star button on the steering wheel
    - how it looks from the front
    Things that i dont like
    - never had better than 220 miles range. Drops to about 180 in the coldest months. But still not needed to use a public charger so it does the job
    - increasing regen with the padals also offsets the positive pedal response. This is really annoying! For example if you have 10% more regen you get 10% less torque for the same positive pedal position. I like driving with max regen, but prefer the positive pedal response on the min regen setting.
    - doesn't regen to a stop, so can't completely do one pedal drive
    - how it looks from the rear
    Issues I've had
    - spec of the car didn't match the Renault spec sheet when ordering.said it had active cruise but just had standard, was meant to have dark interior but got grey. Fortunately the grey interior makes it feel more spacious and I now prefer it
    - knocking from rear since new. Renault replaced the rear bump stops
-Airbag warning light came on. Renault replaced all airbags and airbag control unit
    - auto wing mirrors sometimes get confused
    - had to replace key battery twice in a year
    - for the first three points my experience with Renault aftersales wasn't great, but could have just been that dealer. I would say this is the biggest con, not the car itself

Agree with 95% of your analysis, we have owned a launch edition since January 23. My wife hates the gold blades but the camera rear view mirror makes a huge difference. As for range, 200-210 winter 240-250 summer, very similar to the id3 we owned, also similar consumption to my sister's MG5. Use the voice control all the time, no touching the screen, just excellent. Only real disappointment, thought we would get intelligent self adjusting road sign recognition, as on the continental models and our previous id3. This was depicted on the English launch videos. Still waiting for an update Renault. Perhaps you could ask them for us? Keep up the good work.

I got one three weeks ago - actually my second Megane, having had a big-bum model 20-ish years ago! So far I'm enjoying it very much, still haven't been on any long drives with it - partly been busy, partly waiting for nicer weather - and definitely haven't played with all the toys yet. My word it has a lot of toys...

I love my Megane. I have had it for more than a year and it’s still a joy to drive it. I agree with you that the range could be better. I am charging it at home when it is cheapest so it has not been a huge problem. The range is much better in summer😊
I am from Denmark and therefore have the bigger screen. My car has the rearview camera, which is brilliant. Thank you for a good review.

Thanks to your reviews of the red Megane in 2022 I placed an order for my very own one, collecting it in January 2023. Supposedly this was one of the very first Irish customer cars, so I was pretty chuffed! Despite a few bugs and irritants which you often get with brand new cars, I love it, and get a lot of compliments regarding the way it looks. I had heard of the alarm issue, but assumed that my car came without it, until a family member was locked inside it while I popped into the house. It duly went off, telling me that I actually had an alarm, but also that Irish wire smiths must be better at installing them 😉 It’s a super car to live with, and I can’t wait to see the new R5!

Had mind since Nov 2023 and love it. Same spec/colour as test car. No alarm issue thankfully but bought 23 plate used with 5000 miles so perhaps previous owner sorted it or this car was lucky! Refinement as you say is probably the best word because coming from an MG4 (which i loved from a driving perspective) it really is night and day in every aspect and the Google systems are sooo much better. Great review(s)

I have never had any issue with wrong posision of the charging port. F.x it fit to all Tesla charging stations. This vinther I drove 300 km/60 kWh. In sommertime I drove 400/60 kwh.

Good video, fair unbiased comments. You mention the alarm, wow that brings back some memories, we purchased the Renaual Kadjar some years ago when it was first launched, we were pretty much some of the very first to own the Kadjar in the country, it had the exact same issue with the alarm, it was a nightmare, and was in & out of our local dealership constantly, 6 weeks after taking ownership it was returned for a full refund. Renault had their "top" technicians crawl over the car but just couldn't find the issue, hence having the refund. A year or so later I was speaking to the sales guy who had sold us the Kadjar, he said the one we returned had basically been written off by Renault and was used as a guinea pig to find the alarm issue, apparently it turned out to be the tilt sensor that was located somewhere behind the roof lining, it effected a number of Kadjars within a certain range of VIN numbers, but it took months for Renault to find the issue. I think they ended up relocating the sensor on the next new builds.

Got mine mid-december at what I consider a steal at £27k for a 3 month old 3k miles Techno spec. Loving it, nippy and the size is perfect for me as I've never been the best at maneuvering.
The mid-rear headrest can be removed to improve rear visibility, so I don't find it a problem.
My Tesla Model Y owning friend commented on the superior feel when running over bumps, it's very good.

I've had my Megane E-Tech since May 2023 and it is a lovely car to drive and live with. The alarm thing is annoying and I'm glad there is now a fix. I solved mine by keeping the keys in tin box, since doing that I haven't had the alarm going off. I have the Iconic spec that comes with the screen for the interior mirror which goes a long way to solving the rear visibility issue.

Thank you for your excellent and honest review. I’ve had my Megane E-Tech 9 months and driven 5000 miles. I have been pleased with the car and its qualities have grown on me but I am still a little frustrated that what could have been a 10 out of 10 score only musters 8.5. I drive a lot of EVs but don’t like (or need the space) of an SUV so really the choice was down to the Megane or Cupra Born. The latter was a bit too similar to my two previous BMW i3’s. I wanted a change (not that I had any choice) and definitely felt after a test drive that the Megane was more distinctive with much better tech and overall had a nicer cabin ambiance. I think the styling is absolutely gorgeous. If I was in the market today I might have been persuaded to buy a Tesla M3 SR+ because at less than £40k they do represent excellent value but through 2022 Elon got very greedy and at £48k they were just too expensive for a not very premium car. That said, I prefer a hatchback, the M3 is too big for my requirements and I just don’t get on with the minimalist controls. Anyway coming back to the Megane I love its refinement and general comfort. The Android Automotive operating system is fast, accurate and easy to use. So what am I less enamoured with? No.1 without doubt is the small central screen. It is quite busy with the graphics and not as clear as on the i3. The Polestar 2 screen using the same Android Automotive system (but in a more basic form) is much much clearer. Renault’s decision to only give the UK destined cars a smaller screen is all the more irritating when there is the standard portrait screen in the Austral and Scenic. The other niggle is the cut back interior ambiance lighting. I really think the car is in need of a panoramic roof as the darkish headlining makes the cabin rather gloomy. I have had glass sunroof’s on my cars for the past 25 years and the availability of this option was definitely an attraction with the Born. Personally I find the steering a bit too direct and I have mixed feelings about the quadric steering wheel - nice to the touch but not as good for feeding through your hands on fast bends. I still find the brakes a bit grabby and I have never really come to grips with the multiple re-gen settings. I find the position of the parking brake awkward for use in traffic - it is too far a reach and not easy to see. I wish the hatch button was a little bigger and I would have liked to have the option of a much higher false boot floor so as to be able to carry through loads with the rear seats folded down. Incidentally I don’t find the rear visibility too restrictive if you remove the centre rear headrest. I would have liked the 360 degree camera but I struggled to justify the extra cost for the Launch Edition when this was the only feature over the Techno model that I would have wanted. The range has been a little disappointing so I would have chosen the heat pump (+) option if it had been available when I spec’d my car. I’m also a bit annoyed that Renault cut the price by £3K when they said that the UK specification had been cut back to bring the price below £40k. My car gas been 100% reliable - just one alarm incident - which is a credit to Renault. I can only think that the reason why I don’t see many Megane’s on the road is that the brand still suffers from a poor reputation. For anyone making a dispassionate review the Megane has to be close to the top. It is though more akin in size to a Golf than a Qashqai crossover so not a full family car. I really hope in time that Renault can bring a few improvements to make me revise my score.

I have the Cupra, and for the best part I really like it, but there are more annoying things on it than it seems on the Megane. Looks good, drives superbly a little less range than the Megane but not too much if you don't drive silly. The infotainment system is poor and a real bug bear, as are the haptic controls on the steering wheel. Had the Born for nearly 2 years but i'm now seriously considering changing to the Megane. The quality looks superb

Had my current Techno since October - was 6 months old ex demo and 3k miles when I picked her up for just over £25k - a bargain. This is my 2nd Megane etech Techno - changed jobs and lost my prior lease so went and bought this as a replacement I loved it so much. Now at 12k miles - and pretty flawless. Absolutely the best package in it's class and any winter range loss is similar to all the competitors, but not an issue even with my 100 mile daily use - just plug it in and top up on cheap rate overnight.

A leasing deal as I'm not too sure on the prices - we have big price drops on EV's constantly in DK - as most of the world I presume.

Been driving mine for almost a year (12000km) and I've been surprised how much I like the car. In Finland many of your negatives are actually addressed in the Techno trim level: there's a rear camera mode for the rear view mirror, and the screen is also bigger with more real estate for the maps and UI.
I've high hopes for Scenic as it might address rest of the issues I've with the Megane (namely rear seat space and range + that sweet panoramic roof)

    My issues:
    - Phone holding console is rubbing against my knee (I am rather tall, 193). And there is no way to set up the ergonomics in a safe way without this annoyance.
    - glass surfaces are not very large. Thats the result of making a rather interesting exterior without making sure that the visibility is good.
    - padding for the elbows suck. Seriously suck. Both of my elbows resting either on center console or door start hurting after an hour of driving.
Thats about it. Otherwise is great.
    Could be better if:
    1. Cheaper
    2. Rear wheel drive

I think the lack of a heat pump on the spec you have is probably the cause of the poor range... I'm guessing you had the heater on quite a bit with it being winter. That's why I'm currently looking at the Techno+ version, as that one comes with a heat pump.

Launch Edition. One year and 13k miles.
My biggest niggle [apart from the alarm problem which Renault still hasn't fixed after two attempts] is the stupid little button to open the rear hatch. So tiny, flush with and the same colour as the rest of the bodywork. Whose brilliant idea was that. Literally impossible to see at night in my unlit driveway. And your finger gets dirty.
Apart from that everything else has been brilliant. The voice control is fantastic. The car recognises speed limit signs and there's a button on the steering wheel that will then adjust the cruise control to the relevant speed.
Having not had a Renault before I thought the stalk for the entertainment system looked a bit odd, but it actually works very well. Controls for on/off, volume and scrolling through stations all at your finger tips.
Did you use the Renault app on your phone? I use it to check the state of battery charge without having to leave the house. In the middle of winter [not that we've had much] I can press a 'button' on the app and it heats the car ready for me, and completely de-frosts the windows. No more scraping and cursing! And should I absent-mindedly forget where I left the car the app will show me on a map.
Re the charging port: another reason for not having it on the front of the car is that in extreme climates apparently they can freeze over.
Re wheelchairs: I've had one in mine. Just leave the parcel shelf at home [who needs it?] and put the wheelchair in vertically, so it stands up. No need to lower the rear seats!

For me, my shortlist was down to this and the Niro. The Niro was my winner and that was down to the boot size - I’m a wheelchair user and my wife said “no! I don’t want to be dismantling your chair and putting it into that short, deep boot”. Also, for me, the three stalks on the right would need me to add a fourth - for my push/pull hand controls- and I think that given what is there already would require it to be mounted really low and intrude on knee room.
We’ve had the Niro EV 4 for a week now and I’m pleasantly surprised. I think for us, that was the right choice.

We've had a Megane etech since October 2023 and its great overall. Our wheelchair fits in the boot if I remove the footrests. The biggest issue with the boot IMO isn't the size of the actual boot, its the size of the entry/portal into the boot (its like a tiny window compared to other cars). Other than that the only other things I dont like are that the software could have more settings for example why do I have to reset the regen every time I start the car? - it should just remember my previous settings.

Great review. I started looking at getting my first EV a few months ago and never even considered a Renault, having previously owned a Clio which was not especially well put together. However, after stumbling across the Megan E-tech while searching for EVs on Auto Trader, and after doing my research, I really think this could be the one I go for. I'll be sorry to get rid of my trusty Skoda Yeti, but I think I'd be happy with this machine. I'm looking to spend about £20k so I should be able to pick one up that's a couple of years old.

Been running a Megane E-Tech Techno Plus for a few months now and it has been very impressive all around. My mom and wife who are the primary users just love the car as it is so easy to drive and even I, who is not an EV fan was impressed at the driving dynamics. The only cons are the price or the MSRP!!!! If you are getting a big discount, great or look for a good lease deal. Better yet, buy second hand, 1 year old and you will save a fortune!!!! Make sure you have a home charger and with the Octopus energy EV tarrif which after 11:30pm becomes so cheap. The car looks great especially compared to the legion shapeless EV's that abound. Inside the google based system is just brilliant and fast and overall the interior is excellent. The rear compartment isn't the biggest but more than enough for a family with two kids. Boot is huge though it is deep and can make taking suitcases out a tad harder but really not an issue. Performance is excellent! not blisterring but more than fast enough and above all it is very impressive in the way it deals with some of our crumy road surfaces and it is always compossed. I did not want to like it as I believe we are being forced down an expensive EV route without all the facts, let alone the infrastructure and ultimatly the true long term cost including insurance, repair etc which will hit further down the road and worse, probably pay by mile as they are going to have to make up the shortfall from lower petrol/desiel tax....I personally think hybrids should have been focussed on more until the EV infrastructure was in place. Still as far as the Megane is concerned, impressive. Sorry for the ramble...Oh and finally on range....It is a complete lie but that stands for all EV's...We only charge to 80% and average around 150 to 160 miles though that has been over this cold winter. Still for our use i.e wife and mom so primarliy local use shops, schools, swimming pool, occassional drives to see famly in London and some shopping trips into the center of London, absolulty no issues. I am fairly confident 230 to 240 miles will be the norm in the summer.

I have been running the Renault for the last year. I’ve done approximately 8000 miles in it. It’s going back today, I agree with most of what you said, certainly in terms of the build refinement and so on. However, if you were a 6 foot or more, this car isn’t for you. first, I cannot physically fit in the back. Especially if there is someone fairly large in the front. I didn’t realise how limited the back seat space is, it’s far less than the ID3 for example. In the front, if I have to move the seat forward which I inevitably do even if small people are in the back, my knees are jammed up against the, wireless charging pad which sticks out just the wrong height. I also find that I keep cracking my head on the door all the top of the door frame when I get in and out of the car. I’m totally blind which may not help this, however, I don’t have this problem on, other similar size cars. Hopefully we’ve solved the problems that we had, as we are getting an ionic five instead. I wouldn’t compare the two, as they’re totally different types of vehicle but… I do agree with you very much about the range, throughout the year we probably average around 210 miles.certainly nothing like what was advertised. Incidentally, we had exactly the same car as you did, both trim and colour. we didn’t bother to look at them again scenic,

The new Kona is a great car. We’ve reviewed it against the new Peugeot e2008 a few months ago and it’s brilliant. And Hyundai is brilliantly efficient with great range. And you get a better warranty.
However, I’m tempted to go down the Megane route. Better value, great specification, beautifully refined, great chassis and performance, and the Google operating system is simple to get on with. Plus it looks fantastic!

In comparison, my EV averaged 3.8 m/kwh over its first 12 months (range ~220 miles). Getting ~3.2 m/kwh (~180 miles) over winter, but in summer it was 4.2 to 4.5 m/kwh (~240 to 260 miles) depending on the journey type (ie how much motorway is involved 😂). Had ours for about 2 months now, and 2200 miles. In Winter. So fairly close to your test.
The only time we've gotten less than 200 miles to a charge was a drive from Newcastle to London, 3 degrees celsius and into a 40-60mph headwind during one of the storms. Worked out to around 185 miles to a charge (we kept it above 40% for safety so this is an estimate), but in those conditions fuel economy in a petrol car would have been dreadful too so no complaints. Otherwise we're getting 220-230. The guessometer is very pessimistic (reading around 190-200) but I'd rather have it that way than reading 250 and only delivering 220.
Oh, and in those terrible conditions the car was so planted and confidence-inspiring. Any other car I've driven would have been a handful to drive but the Megane stayed between the lines (without driving aids) like there was a gentle breeze.
Agreed on the small screen not being an issue. We didn't know the European models came with a bigger screen until after we'd put our deposit down. However, there have been a couple of times where the keyboard is needed and takes up too much space on the screen so you can't see what you're typing. Would be an easy software fix (make the keyboard smaller) but it's quite annoying.
On the test drive, within about 2 minutes of driving I said to my wife the rear middle headrest had to go, and the first thing we did when we picked our car up was to remove it. Once you do that the rear view mirror works fine. We don't have kids and will never have 3 people in the back seat so it isn't needed.
I was a bit worried about the 3 stalks on the right-hand side of the steering wheel, but it really isn't a problem at all. The controls fall to hand easily and I've only turned the wipers on once when I wanted to put it in drive :)
Like you, we've had our iPhones not want to connect a few times. Turning Bluetooth off and back on again on the phone solves the problem. I think the phone is trying to connect to another Bluetooth device and getting confused, so I don't blame the Megane for this one. Pretty annoying though when you don't have a passenger in the car to turn BT off and on.
All in all, we absolutely love the car. It's so smooth and comfortable, then you put the accelerator down and it just goes. The Google integration is fast and easy to use, and, wow - Physical buttons. Don't get me started on how much I hate everything being on a touchscreen! And we don't miss the trips to the petrol station one bit!

    Greetings from Denmark 👋.
All that needs to be said is - a drivers car. Not sporty as such, but comfortable and trusty 👍🏼.
In May I say goodbye to my Mégane 😢...but - I will wellcome a brand new Mégane 😄. That's how much I love it 🥰. Do not need the space the Scenic EV can provide and the new R5 EV is not yet available. Never thought I would say this about Renault - they will soon have the most versatile EV programme out there 😉, and for sure - the best looking EV's. Not sure that all other european brands will be in this market in 15 years - but I'm confident Renault has both heart and brains to be present and increase their market share.
Range (mixed) in the summer: 250+ miles, with a record on approx 280 (primarily country roads) ☺️. Winter approx 170+. My daily need is approx 26 miles, so in theory I only need to charge three times a month in the summer, but as I mentioned in the beginning - it's a drivers car so I do detour...a lot 😄.
If Renault made an estate version - I would put it under my pillow 💋.

Hi everyone, ive got the chance to get a Megane e-tech and it would be my first all electric car, i dont have a charging point at home but we have chargers at work that are always available and i live close to places with charging points, is it much of an issue if i dont have a charge point at home? i can charge up before i leave work on a friday so i have plenty over the weekend, thanks in advance.

I’ve been reviewing EVs for 5 years now. Only got a home charger this year. It’s more convenient having one at home, but not essential. Hope that helps.

How did you get on with the custom charging use for overnight charging? Ours has been very unreliable.

Never any issue with scheduling. I don’t set timer on charger, just on car. It’s never failed.

Debating whether this is a good replacement for my enyaq. Since you've driven both how do you think they compare?

    • @AutoEV
      @AutoEV  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

If you don’t need the space that the Enyaq gives you (family/teenagers/carry lots of passengers) buy the Megane. If you need the space that the Enyaq gives you, buy the new Renault Scenic E-Tech. Every bit as good as the Megane in a bigger package. And this is from me, a massive Enyaq fan.

      @enyaq_gorm 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@AutoEV interesting, I've had zero Enyaq issues, but did have a zoe before which had some problems. What would you say is the thing that puts the Renault ahead? The efficiency looks poor compared with the ENyaq - I was getting 4.5 m/kWh on a trip to Perthshire and back at the weekend.

The Scenic is such a great car to drive, very well built (almost as good as the Skoda), more refined and pretty much as big in terms of space. Also just feels a bit more thought out as a family car. But like I said, I’m a massive Enyaq fan too. Go and drive the Scenic. I promise you it’s a brilliant thing to drive. However, if you do buy another Enyaq, I wouldn’t blame you at all!

One thing that reviews rarely, if ever talk about is carrying dogs in the boot. Sometimes it's the only place they can go(when you have passengers as an example) and I would not even consider a Megane e-tech for the one reason - the boot is completely unfriendly for dogs. It was one of the reasons I went for the e-niro which is great for our medium sized dog. I do like everything else about it though!

Likes the Megane when I drove it, but as you say the boot is no good for our small dogs. If it had a higher false floor then it might have better. Went for Kia Niro EV which much more dog friendly.

@@martinharvey1190Yes, our dogs get in and out of the e-niro with no problem. They would have just turned their noses up at the Megane's boot height and drop to the floor!

Not at all surprised you can’t get 200 from 260 in winter. You should expect at least a 25% drop in winter. Nor many EV’s do better than this unless you’re extremely careful with driving them.

Not sure if you tested the Volvo ex30 but if you have is the Renault still the better car? Don’t know which one to buy?

    • @AutoEV

We have yet to get our hands on the Volvo I'm afraid. I have to admit, its a car that really interests me as I have owned a few Volvos myself and am keen to see what they have done with the car. The XC40 Recharge has always impressed me, so I do have high hopes for it, but a lot of my peers in the automotive media have said that the interior layout isn't the best or easiest to use. I do think that some dealers have them now, so a test drive shouldn't be too difficult for you to arrange.

weather affects charging, i only get 200 mls per charge 80 mls short that is advertised ,so i have to wait till summer to get more mileage,
